Role

Location:Based across all of our locations: Currently our sorting facility in Shawlands, main retail shop in Strathbungo and our additional sorting space in Cadogan Square. The post can be based from a desk in Shawlands, Strathbungo or Cadogan Square but we also offer the ability to work some hours from home.

Reporting to: Operations Manager

About Us

Merry-go-round Glasgow is a charity in the Southside that supports local families by providing high quality, low cost children’s goods, inclusive events and workshops. We have a boutique style charity shop in Strathbungo selling everything baby, run an events programme, and collaborate with over 120 agencies to provide free packs of goods to families in need. With a dedicated staff team of 14, we prioritise inclusivity and supportiveness in our work environment.

The Role

We are looking for a competent person to recruit and manage volunteers. This involves being responsible for matching people with suitable roles, integrating and retaining them within the organisation.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and pivotal in supporting all of our services and activities. Therefore the ideal candidate will be excellent in distinguishing skills and do everything possible to motivate and inspire people. They must be highly organised, self-motivated and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communications with people from diverse backgrounds and experience.

The goal is to ensure that our team is always staffed with the best and most reliable individuals and that they are correctly matched with tasks for the fulfilment of our mission.

The key responsibilities are:

  • Work with the staff and board to identify key volunteer opportunities and create volunteer role positions.
  • Maintain volunteer documents and support packs and develop any additional policies and procedures as
  • required.
  • Nurture existing relationships with organisations to recruit volunteers.
  • Identify new agencies and businesses that we can work with to recruit volunteers, with a focus on
  • disadvantaged groups.
  • Manage and enhance the volunteer training and development programme.
  • Support and train existing staff in effectively managing and supporting volunteers.
  • Actively support volunteers ensuring they have opportunities for feedback, growth and development.

Job description

  • Recruit, train, support and communicate effectively with volunteers, ensuring that the values and
  • purpose of the charity are clearly communicated to everyone;
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with partners and organisations to source volunteers;
  • Assign interested volunteers with opportunities that suit both their skill sets and the charity’s needs;
  • Arrange, create and maintain a range of methods of support and training for volunteers;
  • Offer regular feedback on performance and support where necessary;
  • Create any required additional policies, procedures and support tools for volunteers and volunteer management;
  • Coordinate teams of volunteers for large scale events;
  • Maintain detailed, secure and up to date records on the volunteers and other service data for monthly
  • reporting;
  • Plan and facilitate volunteer social gatherings and events;
  • To attend the Volunteer Support Fund cluster meetings and networking events;
  • To be an excellent team member by:

    • work and liaise effectively with the existing staff team and volunteers

Requirements and skills

  • Previous experience of recruiting volunteers.
  • Familiarity of working with, mentoring, supporting and developing volunteers.
  • Understanding of essential policies/procedures/requirements necessary for successful volunteer management and development.
  • Experience in evaluating and monitoring against set targets and outcomes.
  • Computer literate with great IT skills, including the development of electronic documents and team communication.
  • Able to communicate effectively with diverse people.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise well independently.
  • Passionate about working and developing the skills of people.
  • A flexible approach to working and working hours.
  • Familiar with the Volunteering for All National Framework.
