As our Senior Communications Manager, you will lead a high performing communications team to deliver an outstanding approach to communications.
This is a key strategic role contributing to CHS’s vision to drive transformation and deliver positive outcomes for the children of Scotland. The postholder is responsible for establishing and maintaining the highest levels of internal and external communications. They will work with the Senior Leadership Team, board members and colleagues across directorates bringing a strategic approach to communications and engagement activities and proactively seek opportunities to build our brand and exercise influence across the sector.
You will be ensuring our executive and senior leadership teams are supported to the highest standards. Most importantly, as an invaluable enabler of strategic communications, you will help our leaders to deliver on our strategic priorities.

Life at CHS
At Children’s Hearings Scotland, our highly trained Panel Members make decisions for Scotland’s unique Children’s Hearings System that upholds and promotes the rights of infants, children and young people. Our 2,500 volunteer Panel Members take part in children’s hearings in their local areas, making decisions with and for infants, children and young people. Our organisation also supports a network of Area Support Teams throughout Scotland who support Panel Members in their local communities.

Harmeny Education Trust is a charitable organisation providing therapeutic care and education to children who have experienced early years trauma through abuse, neglect and family disruption, referred from all over Scotland. We currently work with children and young people aged 5-18, both on a day and all-year-round residential basis.
Our core service comprises:
• An education service, which includes an outdoor learning team.
• A care service, with five residential cottages.
• Support services, made up of finance, estates, catering and domestic, fundraising, IT, HR, learning and development, and admin teams.
Children who come to Harmeny often have severe attachment disorders, have suffered some form of early years trauma leading to high levels of anxiety and difficulty in managing their behaviour, as well as a range of complex needs. Through highly therapeutic care and education programmes, we help children to gain the skills and resilience to lead healthy and happy adult lives.
We are registered with the Scottish Social Services Council, General Teaching Council for Scotland, Care Inspectorate, Education Scotland, and The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).
Harmeny is situated in a beautiful 35-acre woodland estate, which includes a community garden, orchard, wildlife habitats, children’s play areas and a mountain bike track. Harmeny is located in Balerno on the outskirts of Edinburgh, at the foot of the Pentland Hills; we are easily accessible by bus and there is ample parking.
We are seeking new Trustees to join the organisation and oversee its governance, and we are particularly keen to find candidates with knowledge and experience in any of the following:
• social work/ residential care;
• digital transformation;
• children and families research;
• therapeutic work with children and young people;
• experience of care growing up directly or indirectly; or
• health, ideally in the area of mental health.
Trustees are expected to prepare for and attend four Board meetings per year. Meetings are ideally in-person, albeit we can accommodate remote attendance as required. Additional meetings may be held for urgent matters that do not fit with the set calendar of meetings.
Trustees are also expected to be involved in other matters, for example to join a sub-committee relevant to their skill set or working group, take part in a recruitment panel, attend Harmeny events or support Harmeny’s work externally. Sub-committees meet in advance of the main meetings for a shorter duration, and are generally conducted virtually.

Where the role fits in our organisation
Our Communications and Impact Group are responsible for communications, media, training and event planning plus engagement with the third sector and partners across Dumfries and Galloway. The group also leads on systems, data and insights, evaluation and impact, storytelling, regional and national sector promotion and internal communications. The team includes Development Officers, Support Officers, Coordinators and external partners and advisors.

About the John Smith Trust:
The John Smith Trust supports the development of sustainable, fair and inclusive societies in Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus and Central Asia (the EESCCA regions). We do this by inspiring and nurturing a collaborative community of leaders and change-makers who want to make a positive contribution to society.
We run regular fellowship programmes for exceptional individuals aged 25-35 from 12 countries across the EERSCCA regions who are working in the field of climate and sustainability, governance and justice, or equality, diversity and inclusion. Our 6-month hybrid programmes consist of online discussions and workshops followed by a residential programme in the UK. They are built around three pillars – unique insight into UK institutions, personalised professional meetings and leadership skills development – which together offer both a broad picture and an individual focus.

About the role
The John Smith Trust is looking for a skilled and creative Communications and Events Officer with a flair for social media engagement and passion for supporting the smooth-running of events. We are looking for someone who enjoys working as part of a small, committed team, with strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
