As a result of planned retirements and Board renewal, we have two opportunities to join our Board as Trustees for Shelter Scotland:

Role 1 Trustee

Role 2 Chair of the Scotland Committee and Vice-Chair to the Board of Trustees.

We’re looking for people with a range of professional and personal experiences. Strong candidates will relish the chance to join a high-performing Board, working with an extremely talented and highly motivated Executive Leadership Team. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve in Scotland.

Experience in the following areas would be key:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the operating environment for third sector organisations in Scotland.
  • Experience of public affairs or social policy development in a Scottish context.
  • Experience of delivering anti-racism policy and in practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of fundraising in the Scottish context.

What is the Voluntary Sector?

The ‘voluntary sector’ refers to organisations whose primary purpose is to create social impact rather than profit. It is independent from local and national government, and distinct from the private sector. Charities are the largest single category within the voluntary sector.

Being a Trustee

Our Board of Trustees is a non-executive Board with overall legal responsibility for the direction, management and control of Shelter and is collectively accountable for compliance with charity law, company law and other legislative and regulatory requirements. As a Trustee, you will have the chance to support and shape our work and strategic direction. Trusteeship can help you gain experience of strategy and leadership. It will give you experience of setting a strategic vision, influencing and negotiation, and managing risk. If you already have significant experience in these areas, it can be stimulating to use it in a different and potentially challenging context. As a Trustee, you will be part of a team and will have the opportunity to apply your unique skills and experience while learning from others. Working closely with a passionate team of people who have different perspectives is often one of the most enjoyable aspects of the role. People with lived or learned experience of homelessness can bring powerful perspectives to our Board and play an important role in shaping our strategy. Terms of Appointment Terms of office are normally limited to a maximum of two terms, each of three years.

Remuneration

Trustees receive no fees, remuneration, salary or other financial benefits nor any other material benefits in their role at Shelter. However, they can claim reasonable expenses for attendance at Board and other meetings or events in line with the Trustee Expenses Policy.

Application Criteria

Charity Commission CC30 Guidance and the Charities Act 2011 disqualifies some people from acting as a trustee. Shelter will not appoint a person who is not allowed by law to be a trustee.

About you

You are a strategic and collaborative finance leader with a strong commitment to the mission and values of Clan Childlaw, with experience in financial management, planning, and governance, ideally within the charity, legal, or public sector.

Professionally qualified (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or with equivalent senior experience, you understand charity finance, including restricted funds, SORP reporting, and statutory compliance. You are confident producing management accounts, forecasts, and financial analysis that support effective decision-making.

Comfortable working across both strategic and operational areas, you oversee systems such as payroll, procurement, and financial controls while contributing to long-term financial planning. With strong analytical and communication skills, you translate complex financial information into clear, accessible insight.

Murray’s Initiative delivers a range of interventions including groupwork and employability support as well as a number of holistic and inclusive services, such as a women’s service for survivors of gender-based violence, young persons peer education service, LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing support and tailored wellbeing programmes.

Murray’s Initiative is also a recognised provider of professional development, offering a comprehensive training portfolio including education aimed at increasing awareness of alcohol use and promoting healthier lifestyles, COSCA Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Key Responsibilities of the Counsellor:

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to gain a deep, holistic understanding of a client's current circumstances.
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed accurately and professionally and work with the admin team to ensure that the counselling database and reports are kept accurate and up to date.
  • Attend regular practice supervision and line management meetings, and participate in appropriate meetings and training opportunities, ensuring the minimum required CPD is completed.
  • Complete all mandatory training as required.
  • Adhere to the ethical frameworks of the appropriate governing body (COSCA).
  • Follow organisational policies and procedures, including health and safety.
  • Produce accurate and quality case studies of counselling clients for reports and training.
  • Contribute to service promotion by attending partner meetings in a professional manner.
  • Undertake any other duties as required by the Service Manager – Counselling.

Qualifications and Experience :

  • Obtained a diploma-level qualification in counselling.
  • Completed a minimum of 100 hours of post-qualification client work.
  • Awareness and training in an array of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bereavement and neurodiversity.
  • Demonstratable experience of inter-agency working and working in community settings to be able to provide a high standard of support to clients alongside different services.
  • Up to date, or working towards, registration with COSCA, BACP or similar.

  • Demonstratable excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to empathise with a broad range of individuals and experiences.

Advocacy Lead

This new role would suit someone who is naturally very well-organised, able to build strong relationships and garner support, enjoys working with lots of partners, has experience of Scottish politics, and is committed to climate action and justice. Amidst the self-evident climate emergency it is vital that we re-establish the priority of climate action amongst the public, with politicians and decision makers, and win wide support for urgent change and leadership.

You’ll lead on our engagement with stakeholders, MSPs, government officials and party staff and work to build support through sympathetic groups such as unions and the faith community, in order to help to mobilise our supporters and grow the strong public support for action. You’ll be part of the small SCCS secretariat team that provides support to our diverse members and works with them to plan and deliver advocacy and campaigns activities, so you’ll need to be a great communicator, enthusiastic, proactive and willing to be flexible.

With Scottish elections taking place in 2026, this is an important time to be influencing climate policy. This role will play an essential part in helping the Scottish climate movement navigate the new political context, boost our impact and win deeper support for urgency and action.

About SCCS

Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) is Scotland’s climate coalition, bringing together over 70 civil society organisations campaigning together on climate change. Our membership is diverse and includes national and community organisations working on:

  • Climate action justice
  • Environment and nature
  • Gender and social justice
  • Faith and belief
  • International development
  • Worker and human rights
  • Health and inequality

Together, we represent hundreds of thousands of people across Scotland and stand in solidarity with communities most affected by climate impacts around the world. We collaborate with our members to build strong public support for faster climate action. We use this support to influence decision-makers to put in place fair, effective policies to reduce emissions and benefits for everyone.

Key Tasks
  • Designing an advocacy strategy with our members and leading on the delivery of this, with activities likely to include producing briefings, meeting with MSPs and officials, giving evidence to committees attending party conferences and responding to consultations, amongst other ways identified in work plans to influence politicians.
  • Building and deepening relationships with MSPs, officials and party staff, building support for SCCS’s policy priorities.
  • Attending and organising stakeholder gatherings to recruit more diverse members and build support from unions, the faith community and sympathetic organisations to deliver a more unified, consistent and powerful political voice for urgent climate action which, in turn, will help influence the politicians that rely on these key stakeholders for votes and funding.
  • Ensuring political influencing is connected with media work, mobilising supporters and wider stakeholders, and running public campaigns to build and maintain the public support for action.
  • Day to day monitoring and analysis of the Scottish Parliament, identifying opportunities and sharing information with members.
  • Working with UK organisations on relevant Westminster/reserved matters that affect Scotland, and with TCC, our sister UK coalition, to develop their Local Intelligence Hub so that it becomes a platform Scottish campaigners can use to track advocacy and impact.
  • Supporting members – especially smaller organisations – with their advocacy, offering advice and support when needed.
Personal Specification
Knowledge, experience and skills

Essential:

  • A proven track record in a similar or related role, which included influencing parliamentary processes, policy and campaigning, or won support with diverse stakeholders;
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the political spectrum and with multiple partners to build and maintain strong relationships;
  • A strong understanding of Scotland’s political landscape;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, suitable for different audiences and purposes;
  • Excellent IT skills;
  • Able to work flexibly and identify and act on opportunities for continually improving ways – of working;
  • The ability to work effectively in a small team;
  • Able to prioritise and organise a busy workload;
  • Demonstrable commitment to action on climate change and climate justice.

Desirable:

  • Experience facilitating meetings and organising events;
  • Experience of working with the media.
Qualifications

No specific qualifications are required for the role: the knowledge, skills and experience of the successful candidate will be more important than formal academic qualifications.

Terms and Conditions
  • Salary: £35,000.
  • Hours: 5 days a week (35 hours). The post holder may need to work the occasional evening or weekend, for which time off in lieu will be granted. Overtime will not be paid.
  • Location: Primarily from home, with occasional office working in central Edinburgh.
  • Other travel may be required to meetings, most often in the Scottish Parliament, Scottish Government offices and other locations in the central belt, but occasionally in other parts of Scotland or the UK (for which travel expenses will be paid).
  • Line manager: Stop Climate Chaos Scotland Coalition Manager.
  • Holiday: 28 days annual leave plus 11 days statutory holidays.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support that positively impacts the person we support’s health and wellbeing

Essential Skills and Attributes

  • Qualified to the level required by the SSSC as a support worker in a housing support service/care at home service, or a willingness to work towards and to successfully complete qualification within the SSSC specified timeframe.
  • An energetic, enthusiastic person who would be interested in supporting a young man who lives with autism and learning disability; for whom the service provides 24/7 cover.
  • Support is inclusive of indoor and outdoor activities, so a willingness to be outdoors and be fit enough for longer walks would be essential, within the rural community.
  • A clean UK driving licence is required in order to take our client to and from activities.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative
  • Passion for helping people live independently
  • Experience or interest in housing, social care, or community support
  • Commitment to the values and mission of Care Support Scotland, and to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion

Desired Skills and Attributes:

  • A practice qualification (at least SCQF level 7 or above) recognised by the SSSC, in the category of support workers in a Housing Support Service / Care at Home service, or willingness to work towards this.
  • Understanding of benefits and budgeting support
  • Previous demonstrable experience working within an adult social care setting
  • Understanding of the Care Inspectorate and its purpose
  • Understanding of the SSSC and its purpose
  • A Positive Behaviour Support, or Trauma Informed Practice qualification or accreditation.

What is the role?

This is an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Support Coordinator working 26 hours per week. Working week will be between the following days and hours:

  • Monday - Friday between 8am - 8pm & Saturdays 10am - 4pm

Salary band: £27,598 - £36,445 (pro-rata). Salary on appointment will normally be at the lower salary point, with progression subject to review - in line with VSS progression arrangements. A higher salary placing will only be considered in exceptional circumstances subject to experience demonstrated.

Primary location: Broadside, 2 Powderhall Road, Edinburgh, EH7 4GB, with travel to Jedburgh. You will also be expected to cover throughout Edinburgh, Lothian and Borders.

You will be reporting directly to a Locality Manager, and you will be responsible for ensuring, within your Service(s), that VSS’s local service development and delivery plan is being implemented within your geographical area(s). Service delivery is provided by a team of skilled and knowledgeable volunteers and you will be responsible for planning their deployment to ensure that the service delivered meets the desired outcomes of victims and witnesses of crime and our service users. You will also be responsible for all aspects of volunteer engagement with VSS at your services, including recruitment, induction, learning and development, ongoing performance management and support. Contributing to business planning and co-ordination ensuring that continuous learning takes place to monitor that the outcomes of service users are being met is also part of the role.

You will bring experience from a similar role and a commitment to your own professional development. As a confident and supportive leader, you will know how to motivate others, build trust, and drive performance. You’re comfortable working with data gathering, analysing, and presenting insights that help shape decisions. Some court experience would be advantageous. You believe in fairness and inclusion with the confidence to challenge discrimination, bias, or stereotyping when you see it. Alongside this, you have a solid understanding of the voluntary and charity sector, and willingness to be flexible in working hours and able to travel as required.

About the role

The National Advisory Board (NAB) maximises Barnardo's Scotland's ability to change children's lives in Scotland by providing strategic support and advice to the national executive and bringing their individual and collective skills, experience and networks to bear where opportunities present.

We are looking to add up to 3 people to our existing board with at least one new member who is aged between 18-25 and who may be in formal education, in work or training. We are committed to offering appropriate support in what may well be the first role of this type for the successful candidate(s).

Key activities

Providing targeted strategic support and advice to the national executive across the following areas in the national setting:

  • implementation of Barnardo's corporate strategy
  • engagement with key external stakeholders
  • visiting our services and service users
  • fundraising activities
  • acting as ambassadors generally and on specific matters on request

Identifying opportunities to raise Barnardo's profile and increase its influence among its key stakeholders;

Engaging with the CEO and Trustees in key areas including:

  • key opportunities, risks or challenges requiring top level support;
  • major planned updates to the corporate strategy.

What we're looking for

Passion for the work of the charity, a willingness to commit time and ideally lived experience that is relevant to the charity's activities.

Candidates should be resident in Scotland, be able to demonstrate they work well as part of a team and be able to use skilful questions to build their understanding.

We are looking to add to our existing board with at least one member who is aged between 18-25 and who may be in formal education, in work or training.
