PKD Charity

Scotland Engagement Officer

  • PKD Charity
  • Part time
  • £27,500 – £29,000 pro-rata
  • Remote: Home based in Scotland. With ability to travel to NHS Hospitals and centres across Scotland.
  • Closing 13th April 2026

About the PKD Charity:

Founded in 2000, we’re the first and only UK charity solely dedicated to improving the lives of an estimated 70,000 individuals and their families affected by polycystic kidney disease (PKD) in the UK.

PKD is a range of life-threatening inherited conditions that can cause kidney failure and affect other organs in the body such as the liver, brain, heart and bowels. Most people with PKD live with an uncertain prognosis, intermittent pain and infections, and then have to undergo life saving dialysis or transplant in their 50s.

A few babies have a rare form of PKD which results in death during pregnancy or shortly after birth; the surviving children often have to have either a kidney or liver transplant before the age of 10.

  • We provide reliable, accredited information, advice and personalised support.
  • We raise awareness of the burden of PKD, both clinical and psychosocial.
  • We fund research aimed at understanding more about PKD and the discovery of therapies that will improve quality and longevity of life.
  • We are committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone and encourage applications from all sections of the community.

About the Project

PKD Scotland: Outreach and Community Connections Project.

It is estimated that around 5,000 people in Scotland could be living with Polycystic Kidney Disease. It is however often poorly understood and historically underfunded, meaning people can leave clinic after diagnosis with little support beyond medical appointments.

Many tell us they don't know where to turn for emotional support or to meet others living with the same condition. We want to change that and with support from a National lottery Awards for All grant that is exactly what we are going to do.

The eighteen-month project will see us reach into hospitals across Scotland to try and ensure that no one with PKD in Scotland has to manage their journey on their own. From diagnosis onwards we want all to be aware of the charity, the array of services that we offer and foster engagement.

Two new volunteer led support groups will be established and a group of ambassadors recruited to support the ongoing connections we make to ensure that PKD remains in the spotlight. As our Scotland PKD Engagement Officer you will be central to the success of the project.

Many people only reach us years after diagnosis, often when symptoms worsen, but we know that early connection can make a real difference. PKD is lifelong and people face new challenges at every stage. Having support around them helps them stay confident, informed and connected.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As PKD’s Scotland Engagement Officer, you will play a central role in delivering this ambitious outreach project.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will raise awareness of the PKD Charity and its services, ensuring that people diagnosed with PKD are informed about available support from the earliest possible stage.

You will build and nurture relationships with NHS professionals and services across Scotland, helping embed PKD Charity information and resources into patient pathways. Alongside this, you will work closely with volunteers to establish two new PKD support groups and develop an ambassador programme to maintain long-term local engagement and visibility.

This is an exciting opportunity for a confident relationship-builder who enjoys working autonomously while contributing to a small and dedicated team. Your work will help ensure that people living with PKD across Scotland feel informed, connected and supported throughout every stage of their condition.

Your contribution is important to creating sustainable and accessible transport networks.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Manage straightforward projects from start to finish through all RIBA stages.
  • Use technical expertise to produce accurate and reliable project outputs and deliverables.
  • Engage with internal colleagues, external partners, regulatory authorities and other key stakeholders during project delivery.

Barnardo's Scotland

National Advisory Board Member

  • Barnardo's Scotland
  • Management Board
  • Unpaid
  • On site: Scotland
  • Closing 14th April 2026

About Barnardo's Scotland

We're here to help children, young people and their families across Scotland feel safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful.

At Barnardo's we believe in children – no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through.

For over 150 years, we've been here for children and young people who need us most – bringing love, care and hope into their lives and giving them a place where they feel they belong. We are here because too many children and young people across the UK are missing out on a good childhood, and on the opportunity to thrive when they become adults.

We'll continue to be here for as long as we're needed – working with children and young people to be safe, happy, healthy and hopeful.

We will never, ever give up on the things that matter to them - and we'll do everything we can to give them a place where they feel like they belong.

In everything we do, we work with children and young people to be safer, happier, healthier and more hopeful.

Safer: So children at risk of harm are better protected.

Happier: So children struggling with their wellbeing can access support and feel they belong.

Healthier: So children growing up with disadvantage can experience good physical and mental health.

More hopeful: So children experiencing challenges can move into adulthood with hope and confidence.

We're determined to make this happen.

Central to how we work are our four values:

  • implementation of Barnardo's corporate strategy
  • engagement with key external stakeholders
  • visiting our services and service users

  • key opportunities, risks or challenges requiring top level support;
  • major planned updates to the corporate strategy.

What we're looking for

Passion for the work of the charity, a willingness to commit time and ideally lived experience that is relevant to the charity's activities.

Candidates should be resident in Scotland, be able to demonstrate they work well as part of a team and be able to use skilful questions to build their understanding.

We are looking to add to our existing board with at least one member who is aged between 18-25 and who may be in formal education, in work or training. We are committed to offering appropriate support in what may well be the first role of this type for the successful person. This is part of our commitment to ensure that our board includes people with recent lived experience and/or awareness of some of the services and support the charity provides.

What we're asking of you

  • The NAB meets formally four times a year, sometimes in person (usually in person in Edinburgh or Glasgow) and sometimes virtually.
  • There will be likely one or two additional formal meetings involving other colleagues from across Barnardo's to which NAB members would be invited
  • Uphold the Barnardo's Values and always act in accordance with Barnardo's Safeguarding Code of Conduct

What we're offering to you

We will offer support throughout the process, from recruitment to onboarding and then in ensuring a successful term of office in the role.

For our successful candidate(s) earlier in their education and professional journey, we will offer enhanced support for you to build knowledge of being part of an organisational board including an individual mentor for your development.
