Common Wheel

Treasurer

  • Common Wheel
  • Management Board
  • Unpaid
  • On site: Glasgow
  • Closing 24th November 2026

Glasgow-based mental health charity Common Wheel is seeking a Volunteer Trustee Treasurer to join its Board

Organisation profile

Our vision is that people with mental illness in Glasgow can live a meaningful and satisfying life and contribute to society.

Our mission is to improve mental wellbeing, increase skills and reduce isolation through the provision of supported, meaningful activities for people with mental illness and dementia.

Our values are Care, Equality, Positivity and Partnership

We currently provide four principal activities as well as “drop-in” sessions at various Glasgow locations:

  • Bicycle building, maintenance and repair at workshops in Maryhill and Bridgeton
  • Participatory music, in a variety of settings
  • Carnival art – creating art in all forms.
  • Indoor climbing

We support people living in the local community, on hospital wards and in care homes. Over 500 people a year benefit from the work we do.

We will have an annual turnover of just under £300K and a permanent workforce of approximately seven staff, supported by volunteers and freelancers who help deliver our programmes.

Who are we looking for?

This is a volunteer role joining the existing Board of Trustees. The Treasurer will be a full trustee and will provide leadership and assurance on Common Wheel’s finances, while sharing collective responsibility for the charity’s governance and strategic direction.

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with financial management, accounting or audit experience. A recognised accountancy qualification is welcome, but it is not essential where applicants can demonstrate strong financial literacy, sound judgement and experience of explaining financial information clearly to non-financial colleagues.

Experience of charity finance, governance, budgeting, risk management, reserves planning, payroll, funding or regulatory reporting would be valuable. The Treasurer should be collaborative and willing to work constructively with the Chair, Charity Manager, external Finance Manager, staff, trustees, independent examiner or auditor, and external advisers.

We welcome expressions of interest from younger candidates, women, people from ethnic minority communities, and disabled people, as we recognise our board would benefit from a greater diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.

Knowledge or experience of the charity or community sector is desirable but not essential. Direct experience of the issues our charity seeks to address is also welcome but not essential.

Role profile

As a trustee, the Treasurer shares the Board’s collective responsibilities and leads its scrutiny of financial matters. Key responsibilities include:

  • ensuring that Common Wheel pursues its charitable purposes and complies with its governing document, charity law and other relevant legislation
  • working with the Charity Manager, Finance Manager and relevant staff to prepare annual budgets, cash-flow forecasts and longer-term financial plans for Board approval
  • presenting clear and timely financial reports to each Board meeting, highlighting performance against budget, cash position, forecasts, risks and decisions required
  • helping trustees understand the charity’s financial position and the implications of strategic, operational and funding decisions
  • overseeing the adequacy of financial controls, delegated authorities, banking arrangements, record keeping, fraud prevention and management of financial risk
  • being an authorised user for banking purposes, able to deputise for the Finance Manager and other authorisers as required
  • monitoring the charity’s reserves, restricted funds, income sustainability and use of resources, and advising the Board where corrective action is needed
  • coordinating preparation and Board review of the annual accounts and trustees’ annual report, and liaising with the independent examiner or auditor
  • supporting timely and accurate regulatory submissions, including annual returns and accounts, and helping ensure compliance with OSCR requirements, relevant accounting standards, tax and other applicable financial obligations
  • contributing to strategic decision-making and working in partnership with the Project Manager and fellow trustees to achieve Common Wheel’s aims

The responsibilities of charity trustees in Scotland are set out in detail at oscr.org.uk/media/2728/v10_guidance-and-good-practice-for-charity-trustees.pdf

Time commitment

Board meetings typically take place on a Tuesday at 6pm each month and last for approximately 2 hours.

In addition, Trustees have historically taken part in an annual strategy development meeting, either at the weekend or extended evening session.

Trustees are also invited to join one of the sub-committees (currently focused on our bike project) or occasional working groups to suit their skills. These groups meet as and when necessary, at times to suit the members.

The Treasurer should also allow time between Board meetings to review management accounts, budgets, forecasts and year-end information; discuss material issues with the Chair and Project Manager; and liaise with the independent examiner or auditor. Additional time is likely around budget setting and preparation of the annual accounts.

Common Wheel is a small organisation supported by volunteers, so the Treasurer should be comfortable combining strategic oversight with occasional practical support, while respecting the distinction between governance and day-to-day management.

Expenses

All reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

The Unicorn Preservation Society

Fundraising Consultant

  • The Unicorn Preservation Society
  • Part time
  • Sessional
  • On site: Dundee
  • Closing 6th November 2026

Background

Unicorn Preservation Society (UPS) is a Scottish charity responsible for the preservation of HMS Unicorn, one of the world’s oldest surviving warships and an important part of Scotland’s maritime heritage.

The Society faces two related fundraising challenges:

  • Financial sustainability: securing sufficient unrestricted and revenue funding to support the charity’s core operating costs, develop sustainable income streams and strengthen its long-term financial position.
  • Project Safe Haven (PSH) securing the capital funding required to support the major conservation project to safeguard HMS Unicorn for the future. Comprising transfer of HMS Unicorn into permanent dry dock in the East Graving Dock adjacent to her current location with new visitor facilities and shelter structure.

The Society wishes to appoint an experienced fundraising consultant/contractor to develop a clear, realistic and actionable fundraising plan that addresses both these priorities and supports the long-term sustainability of the organisation and the ship.

This work will contribute to UPS’s PSH Development Phase funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF.)

Purpose of the commission

The successful applicant will work with the Society to develop a prioritised fundraising plan for the period 2027 – 2030 covering both revenue and capital funding and keyed to Project Safe Haven milestones as appropriate.

The plan should identify the most promising funding opportunities, establish clear priorities, and set out the actions, resources and timescales required to pursue them. It should be grounded in an assessment of the Society’s circumstances, fundraising capacity and funding needs, and should distinguish between opportunities that can

deliver income in the short term and those requiring longer-term development.

The plan must be realistic about the likely availability and timing of funding, the probability of success and the resources required to secure it. It should be sufficiently practical to guide implementation by the Society following completion of the commission.

Events & Fundraising Lead

  • Quarriers
  • Full time
  • £32,177
  • Hybrid: Glasgow
  • Closing 10th November 2026

Love bringing people together, creating brilliant events and turning great ideas into opportunities that make a difference? This could be the role for you.

Your new opportunity

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and commercially minded Events & Fundraising Lead join Quarriers and help us grow our fundraising, partnerships and events.

This is no ordinary fundraising role. One day you could be building relationships with community groups and corporate partners, the next you could be bringing a conference to life, developing a new fundraising idea or showcasing William Quarrier Scottish Epilepsy Centre (WQSEC) as a fantastic venue for events and training.

You’ll have the freedom to build connections, spot opportunities and make things happen – all while generating valuable income that supports the work of Quarriers and WQSEC.

What you’ll be doing

  • Growing community fundraising and developing new ways for people and organisations to support Quarriers.
  • Building exciting relationships with supporters, businesses, NHS partners, charities, universities and community groups.
  • Supporting volunteers and bringing people together around fundraising activities and events.
  • Creating sponsorship and partnership opportunities that deliver real value.
  • Promoting WQSEC’s conference, meeting and training facilities and helping to grow venue income.
  • Taking events from the first enquiry through to the big day – coordinating bookings, catering, technology, room set-up and everything in between.
  • Delivering a fantastic experience that keeps clients, supporters and partners coming back.
  • Taking ownership of income generation, target achievement and performance, using creative approaches to maximise growth opportunities.

What we’re looking for

You might already work in fundraising, events or business development – or you may have built your experience in a customer-focused commercial role. What matters most is that you’re a confident relationship-builder who enjoys variety, takes ownership and can turn opportunities into action.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience in fundraising, business development, events management or customer relationship management.
  • A natural ability to network, engage and build lasting relationships.
  • Excellent organisation skills and the confidence to juggle different projects, events and deadlines.
  • A creative, proactive approach and plenty of ideas.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience of working towards financial or income-generation targets.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and CRM or database systems.
  • A full valid UK driving licence with access to your own car is essential.

Charity-sector, venue or conference experience would be a bonus, as would experience of working with volunteers or using Raiser’s Edge – but don’t let that stop you applying if you have great transferable experience.

A role with variety and flexibility

This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week. We work in an agile way, so your week will be a blend of working from WQSEC in Glasgow, visiting communities and partners across Scotland, and working from home, depending on what you need to achieve.

Fundraising and great events don’t always happen Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, so occasional evening and weekend working will be required to support events and fundraising activity.

If you’re looking for a varied role where you can be creative, build meaningful partnerships, deliver memorable events and see the impact of your work, we’d love to hear from you.
