AAFDA is a growing charity, and we are looking for a specialist Children’s Advocate to be based in Scotland. Although home based, travel will be required across Scotland. We welcome applications from candidates who are registered social workers and who have professional experience of working with people who have experienced domestic abuse.

We are also committed to diversity and strongly encourage applications from those with Black and/or Minoritised backgrounds.

AAFDA was founded by Frank Mullane in memory of his sister Julia Pemberton and her son Will who were both killed by her ex-partner in 2003.

Scotland is expected to introduce Domestic Homicide and Suicide Reviews (DHSRs) in April 2026. We are looking for a candidate with a good understanding of the Scottish legislative system and good understanding around domestic abuse and how it impacts on children to join our growing charity. Each year, in Scotland, around 25 families lose a loved one to fatal domestic abuse, perhaps one third of this number being domestic homicides and the others being suicides following domestic abuse. The actual number of domestic abuse related suicides remains unknown.

Many of these families suffer significant problems including relationship breakdown, job difficulties/loss and mental and physical health issues. The Children’s advocate will provide expert advocacy, specialist peer support to children, and other services, helping them practically and emotionally. This may include helping them to contribute to DHSRs and providing opportunities to recover from harm for example via trauma therapy and other services.

Through trauma-informed approaches, you will help the children bereaved by fatal domestic abuse:

  • To enhance their voice after fatal domestic abuse including by helping them to contribute to domestic homicide and suicide reviews and formal / informal meetings with various professionals.
  • By providing residential peer support events, or access to these events for both the children and their carers.
  • Via virtual support tools and other resources.
  • By developing pathways into groupwork programmes for carers of bereaved children.
  • Cope and recover by direct support and by linking into other services, for example, specialist trauma therapy.

Role Description

The Head of Income and Engagement is responsible for diversifying and growing Dog Aid Scotland’s fundraising income streams as well as overseeing the charities strategic communications and marketing activity. Reporting directly to the CEO, the postholder will develop and deliver a comprehensive Income and Engagement Strategy that ensures sustainable income growth, deepens supporter engagement and increases awareness of this long-standing charity. As well as working at a high level, this will be a hands on, operational role which is expected to work directly with donors and lead on fundraising activity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of Income and Engagement Strategies aimed to grow income sustainably and significantly increase awareness of the charity
  • Grow income from individual giving, regular giving, fundraising events and legacy giving, whilst looking to develop further income streams such as major donors, trusts and foundations in future.
  • Develop strong donor journey that's engaging, from recruitment and stewardship to longer term donor retention.
  • Create and deliver engagement strategy focused on growing brand awareness, deepening engagement and understanding of the charity, its impact and services.

Grey Squirrel Control Officer - Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels

The Role:

The Grey Squirrel Control Officer will contribute to a programme of targeted grey squirrel control to protect key populations of Scotland’s red squirrels, in accordance with the Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels plan to protect red squirrels in priority landscapes in South West Scotland. This role requires an individual with experience in mammal control work that enjoys working outdoors, who is approachable and enjoys interacting with people.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Delivering grey squirrel control, including supporting grey squirrel control volunteers and Red Squirrel Networks in the SSRS Priority Areas for Red squirrel Conservation. The role covers the South West of Scotland with the main areas of responsibility being Dumfries town and surrounding area, including local Priority Areas for Red squirrel Conservation.

Specifically this includes:

1. Carrying out targeted and strategic grey squirrel control in agreed areas according to the SSRS project’s Standard Operating Procedures.

2. Working collaboratively with other Grey Squirrel Control Officers, area volunteer group(s) and external organisations. This includes assisting with training new volunteers to take on the roles o monitoring and control activities.

3. Provide opportunities for new trainees to work with you on your trap-rounds to ensure they are capable of working to SSRS standards on private or publicly-held land and understand the principles of trapping for grey squirrel management.

4. Where required, carry out monitoring to assess squirrel presence e.g. feederbox camera traps

5. Work with the Lead Control Officer to deliver training sessions, where required, to new SSRS staff, volunteers and/or land managers in all aspects of best practice grey squirrel control, Rapid Response Monitoring and Squirrel Pox Sampling techniques.

6. Assist the SSRS Lead Control Officer and SSRS Communications Officer, as needed, in responding to enquiries from the public regarding grey squirrel control for red squirrel conservation.

The successful candidate will:

The successful candidate will possess an SVQ/NVQ level 2 or equivalent in Game and Wildlife Management or related discipline or relevant experience of game keeping, invasive/non-native mammal control or pest control. A good understanding of conservation principles, practices and legislation would also be desirable as would the ability to keep and maintain accurate records in Word and Excel.

Relevant previous experience is essential, together with experience working with landowners, gamekeepers, foresters and the public. A knowledge of forest and native tree species and familiarity with the Dumfries area would be advantageous.

There may occasionally be a requirement to work out of normal working hours.

You must possess a full clean driving licence.

Applicants will ideally have a minimum of 2 years’ experience of working with BME Communities and hold a minimum of SVQ Level III (SCQF Level 6 or above) in Social Care or relevant qualification such as degree in Social Work or Community Education and be speakers of a BME community language; preferably Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Arabic or African or East Asian languages . Applicants must have sound knowledge and understanding of equalities issues and the issues affecting BME women, children, and young people, understanding of the legislative and cultural issues surrounding BME specific Gender-Based violence, domestic abuse, honour-based abuse such as forced marriage and female genital mutilation, and their effects on BME women, their children, and young people.
