We’re looking for an exceptional External Trustee to join our dynamic and ambitious Student Union Board. With a new strategy underway and major change programmes taking shape, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on student experience and organisational growth.

Who We Are

We are an energetic, student-centred charity representing over 10,000 Heriot-Watt University students. We deliver services, events and welfare support to help students succeed academically, socially and personally. In addition, our trading operations include a lively bar, a popular coffee shop, and a thriving shop.

We generate around £3M annually, all reinvested into enhancing student wellbeing and services. Guided by our long-term strategy, The Big Plan, we are transforming the way we support our members (our students) and strengthening our governance and leadership structures to match.

Why This Role Matters

As an External Trustee, you’ll play a key role in steering our next phase of development. Working closely with other members of the Board and our CEO, you’ll help shape strategic priorities, ensure strong governance, and guide us as we deliver meaningful change for our student community.

You will add value by helping the Board to focus on the Union’s strategic purpose, long-term direction, organisational health and impact, while supporting the executive team to deliver the operational detail.

Our Trustee Board

You’ll join a high-performing and diverse Board that includes:

• Elected student officers

• Undergraduate and postgraduate student trustees

• External trustees with relevant experience from sectors including finance, HR, charity, education and the private sector

Together, the trustees offer oversight, strategic leadership, and accountability, ensuring we remain financially sustainable, legally compliant and focused on student needs.

Who We’re Looking For

We warmly welcome applications from those with experience in governance, strategy, organisational development and student-focused environments. We’re especially interested in candidates with backgrounds such as:

• Business development or strategic planning

• Student engagement or wellbeing

• SME leadership

• Third sector leadership

If you have experience of chairing committees or boards or aspire to grow into a Chair role we’d particularly like to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

As a Trustee, you will:

• Provide strategic oversight and strong governance, ensuring compliance with the requirements of OSCR (the Scottish Charity Regulator)

• Work collaboratively with other members of the Board and the CEO to shape and support delivery of The Big Plan

• Bring expertise to enhance performance, student services and organisational growth

• Help maintain a Board culture that is strategic, inclusive, and focused on impact and assurance

• Champion the Union’s values and commitment to student wellbeing

This is a non-executive governance role; as a trustee you will fulfil the role of providing strategic supportive challenge in respect of day-to-day management of the Union.

Time Commitment

• Four evening Board meetings per year (5:30–7:30pm)

• One full-day annual Strategy Day

• Regular meetings with the CEO (either in person or online)

• Involvement in sub-committees or project groups of the Board

Meeting papers are provided at least one week in advance.

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a committed and spiritually mature Christian leader to develop and pioneer faith-based youth work across Kinross-shire.

Working as part of the leadership team, you will collaborate closely with the Head of Youth Work, Kinross-shire Parish Church and other local congregations to maintain and grow meaningful opportunities for young people to explore the Christian faith.

You will:

  • Lead and develop weekly and annual faith-based youth initiatives
  • Create and adapt engaging programmes that support young people at different stages of their faith journey
  • Further intergenerational worship opportunities in partnership with local churches
  • Build trusted relationships with young people through open-access youth work
  • Provide individual spiritual support and mentoring to young people
  • Strengthen partnerships between KYTHE and local congregations
  • Contribute to strategic planning and organisational development
  • Model and uphold KYTHE’s Christian values through spiritual leadership and active participation in team prayer and reflection
  • Monitor progress, track outcomes and report to Trustees and church partners

This is a varied and relational role combining youth work delivery, spiritual leadership, partnership development and strategic contribution — offering the opportunity to make a lasting impact on young people and the wider Christian community in Kinross-shire.

What KYTHE Needs From You

The ideal candidate will hold a recognised qualification in Christian Ministry with an emphasis on youth work and bring substantial experience of working with young people. You will be confident discussing and exploring the Christian faith with young people, including those with little prior church experience.

Collaborative and relational in your approach, you will be able to work effectively with churches of different denominations while building trust with young people from diverse backgrounds.

You will demonstrate spiritual maturity, personal integrity and a clear commitment to Christian faith and leadership.

A creative and reflective practitioner, you will be comfortable contributing to team prayer, engaging in your own spiritual development, and supporting colleagues in theirs. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to manage priorities, contribute to planning, use IT systems effectively, and support monitoring and reporting requirements.

Experience of youth leadership, chaplaincy engagement within schools, programme development, and partnership working within a church context would be advantageous.

About the role

Working at Crisis Skylight Edinburgh, you will lead on the delivery of our volunteer programme. You will be responsible for the recruitment of new volunteers, the support of existing volunteers and volunteer to maintain a positive volunteer experience. You will work across teams to ensure volunteers’ experience of volunteering is positive and play a key role in volunteer retention. You will have the ability and confidence to increase the diversity and variety of our volunteering opportunities to reflect our local community and better serve our members. You will be flexible and innovative in reaching a diverse group of people from across the local community. You will also lead on the delivery of events that involve our members, build networks and increase awareness of Crisis’ work in Scotland.

You will have experience of working with people who are socially excluded or with support needs. You will understand the importance of delivering equitable services and can empower our members to share their experience and contribute to continuous service adaptations and improvements. You will be creative and inclusive in establishing service-specific member involvement opportunities so members can influence our service locally. You will work across teams to ensure we deliver our service with people experiencing homelessness, instead of delivering a service to people experiencing homelessness. You will work with the central Crisis team to respond to member involvement opportunities, influencing policy and providing members with the opportunity to share their story with the wider public and media.

About you

About the Role

As Treasurer, you’ll provide financial oversight, guidance and governance at board level. You’ll work closely with the Centre Director and Finance Officer to ensure the organisation remains financially healthy, compliant, and able to plan sustainably.

This is not a bookkeeping role — day-to-day accounting is already managed inhouse. Instead, we are seeking someone who can offer strategic insight, clarity and assurance around finances and risk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the organisation’s financial governance and ensure compliance with OSCR (Scottish Charity Regulator) requirements.
  • Review management accounts, budgets, and financial reports before board meetings.
  • Support the Director in preparing the annual trustees’ report and liaising with independent examiners/auditors.
  • Advise on financial risks, sustainability, reserves, and long term financial planning.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions at Board level, including capital planning and funding strategy.
  • Champion best practice in charity finance and support the development of internal financial processes.

We welcome applicants with a range of financial backgrounds, including but not limited to:

  • Accountants (qualified or part qualified)
  • Finance managers
  • Bookkeepers with strong financial governance experience
  • Individuals with charity finance knowledge
  • People with a passion for community arts who bring confidence working with numbers

Essential Attributes

  • Confidence reading financial statements and budgets

  • Experience with charity finance or SCIO structures
  • Understanding of capital projects or long term organisational planning

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 4–6 hours per month
  • Minimum one year commitment preferred
