Trustees: Fundraising/Treasurer

2050 Climate Group is now accepting applications for trustees with fundraising expertise and a treasurer to join our Board. Trustees will help govern and lead the organisation, and guide it through an exciting next chapter as we develop our small (but mighty) staff team and our incredible volunteer team and network.

Time commitment:8 - 15 hours per month, dependent on Board priorities and individual availability. Board meetings every 2 months on a Saturday.

Role:unpaid, but expenses are reimbursed

About 2050 Climate Group

We empower young people to take action on the climate crisis. Since 2014, we have been doing this through engaging, educating, and empowering Scotland’s young people - who we call Young Leaders.

We equip young people aged approximately 18 to approximately 35 with the skills and knowledge they need to collectively lead Scotland in the transition to a just and sustainable society.

2050 Climate Group established as a charity in February 2017. Our registered charitable purpose is the advancement of education on climate change issues and leadership skills with the aspiration of engaging, educating and empowering the next generation of leaders to take action on climate change, thereby advancing environmental protection and improvement. So far in our organisation’s short history we have achieved significant successes, such as:

  • Training around 750 young people through our Young Leaders Development Programme (YLDP)
  • Hosted our 4th Youth Summit “Let’s Talk COP26”, equipping 200+ young people with the knowledge and confidence to engage with the COP26 decision making process
  • Enabled 16 delegates to attend COP26 Blue Zone as official observers, pushing for more ambitious action and the youth voice as well as hosting an event in the Green Zone.
  • Distributed over £9,000 directly to 19 youth-led climate action projects via our 2050x fund
  • Policy engagement to enable young people to make their voices heard in political decision making, including consultation responses on the Circular Economy Bill and Biodiversity Strategy as well as meetings with MSPs including Lorna Slater and Michael Matheson
  • Facilitating our 700+ strong Leaders Network to continue to connect and collaborate to take action towards a just and sustainable society
  • Established our Climate Circles- communities for collaboration focused on themes of transport and energy
  • Held two well-being days for our team with a focus on foraging and tree planting/conservation
  • Winning the Scottish Green Energy Awards for Skills Contribution 2017, and the Global Game Changers Award 2018
  • Speaking about our work at four consecutive United Nations’ climate change COPs, including COP26 in Glasgow.
  • Giving evidence in the Scottish Parliament on the 2018 Climate Change Bill
  • Our collaboration with Malawian Young Leaders through the Scotland Malawi Partnership

The Board of Trustees

The 2050 Climate Group Board is responsible for governing the organisation. They are responsible for growing the overall impact of the charity, and for overseeing our 3-year strategic plan. Over the last 12 months, we have been working to develop our 2023-2026 strategic plan with a focus on diverse participation, which will be launched in August this year.

It is a core value that our organisation is for young people and run by young people. We lead by example with regards to promoting young people and pursuing equality and inclusion through our Board.

We are looking to recruit a number of Trustee positions that fall under the following categories:

  • Trustees who bring in specific skills: We are looking for applicants with fundraising experience for our fundraising trustee roles, and for applicants with budgeting, accountancy, and financial skills for our treasurer role. Please specify which of the two roles you wich to apply for in your application.
  • Trustees who bring in varied perspectives. We recognise that young people are a diverse group and want our Board of Trustees to be representative of Scotland’s diverse communities. We are particularly interested in applicants that would bring in varied perspectives. This might be due to your life experience, ethnic or social background, physical or neurological differences, or anything else you feel relevant.

Operations Co-ordinator

Job Purpose

The job will play a critical role in supporting the organisation’s day-to-day operations with a strong focus on volunteer support and development. This role will work across the range of functions to make sure we have the right administrative and project management support in place for our volunteer team, staff, the Director and trustees. This role will also assist the development and growth of our Leaders Network. The Leaders Network allows Young Leaders, past and present, to build knowledge, develop projects, collaborate with others, share skills and lead climate action towards a just and sustainable society.

You will be a flexible individual, able to co-ordinate people, processes, and projects with confidence and quickly be able to build rapport with stakeholders. The role will be essential in administering and co-ordinating the activities of 2050 Climate Group including financial administration and event support. The role will work closely with volunteers, therefore flexibility with working patterns is required to support some evening and weekend work.

You will be joining 2050 Climate Group at a pivotal moment as we develop and deliver a refreshed strategic vision, due to be launched in 2023.

You will work closely with the Board of Trustees to influence our strategic direction, and then play a key role in implementing it by providing operational leadership.You will lead our small staff team and oversee our day-to-day operations, including the delivery of work plans, finance and HR management, and reporting on our progress.

You will also work closely with the Board of Trustees to help manage and develop successful external stakeholder and funder relationships.

The role of a Trustee offers you the opportunity to develop personally and professionally and contribute to a significant and growing climate movement in Scotland. We offer opportunities for skills development, training and leadership. As a Trustee, you will also have the opportunity to publicly represent the organisation and meet high profile stakeholders. In addition, we are very proud of our well-being focused organisational culture that we foster, so joining our Board also means joining a supportive, friendly, and ambitious network of young people. The role is unpaid, but we reimburse travel expenses for attending meetings, when in person.

Ultimately, we care less about the number of years of experience you have and especially value the perspectives and skills you can bring to our organisation. We have only two requirements: you are aged around 18- approximately 35 when you apply, and you have a strong connection to Scotland.

Job Purpose

You will play a critical role in the development and implementation of our Communications Strategy. You will coordinate the organisation's external communications, with a strong focus on collaborating with our volunteers to generate social media and website content. This role will work across the whole organisation to capture stories and ensure our audiences clearly understand who we are, what we do, and how they can get involved. This will be done in an accessible way with a focus on reaching new audiences.Crucial to this role is supporting and empowering our volunteers, and other staff and trustees’ where appropriate, enabling them to perform their roles to the highest standard with the highest impact. There may be some opportunities for line management of paid placements (e.g. through the Kickstarter scheme) where they occur.

You will be a flexible individual, able to co-ordinate people, processes, and projects with confidence and quickly be able to build rapport with others. You will be essential in managing and co-ordinating our communications activities and able to deal appropriately with reactive media and communications. Job Purpose

This role requires an individual experienced in delivering international development projects and partnerships. The person recruited will co-ordinate the fourth year of the Malawi Climate Leaders Project in partnership with the Malawi-based staff team, and will be responsible for leading 2050 Climate Group’s side of the project delivery in Scotland, including securing funding to continue the project. The role will require fast paced delivery of milestones and strong experience in a similar or project-based role is essential.

The role will require close working with volunteers in Scotland and Malawi, therefore occasional evening and weekend work will be required. If Covid-19 restrictions significantly ease, the role may also require management and co-ordination of country exchange visits.

The post-holder will have a unique opportunity to work with our trustees, volunteers and staff to help shape and deliver key aspects of our international work programme, including planning and co-ordinating activities in the lead up to COP26 in Glasgow later this year.
