What will your day look like?
Like most homes, mornings can be busy. Ours usually begins around 7.30am just before our young people wake and are up choosing their breakfasts, as we help them make their plans for the day.
After having support with their personal care and medication, often it is some big decisions to make, about what to wear, how to wear their hair and what to plan for the food menu for the rest of the day.
As significant adults in their lives we use our skills and knowledge in creating timetables of activities and planned programs. We support young people to have expectations that we are listening to their views and what’s important to them.
The best part of our day is joining in with young people and sharing some flexible fun, such as playing games, watching favourite movies, nights out, bowling, crazy golf, special days out at the weekends to their favourite places and also seeing them enjoy spending time with their families. Happiness and feeling loved is a key aspect of our care, as we teach young people to build upon their skills, focusing on their strengths and what they can do. We respect their values as we build upon their confidence through a range of interventions and creative activities which will enhance their self-esteem and how they view themselves even when days can be difficult and challenging for them. We work on developing a culture of shared language using a range of communication tools and creating calm predictable and structured environments, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
Like all young people, our young people have their own individual ways of doing things, have different interests and views, have their preferred way of making choices and their own unique ways of engaging and having fun whilst building trusting relationships and friendships.
When we finally get to bedtime and young people are settled for the night, that’s when we carry out some of our paperwork ensuring it reflects plans, risk assessment, personal goals and SHANNARI assessments.

Aberlour, in partnership with Scottish Borders Council, has developed a service for families with children at ‘the edge of care’, families who are often feeling overwhelmed by the complex demands of parenting and struggling to support the needs of their children at home, at school and in the community. At what can be a highly charged and emotional time for families, Sustain Borders offers a relationship-based and strengths-focused approach.
Working collaboratively with local partners our aim is to help children and families stay together. Families experience a wide range of social, emotional and structural challenges which can impact on health and wellbeing. Our relationship-based approach is informed by an understanding of attachment and the impact of trauma. We offer whole family support and work individually and in groups with children, young people, parents, and carers. Our approach helps families to seek solutions, build on strengths, learn new skills, and grow in confidence. We work together to improve relationships, helping families to live, laugh and learn together and improving their connection with, and contribution to, life at home, at school and in the community.
In our first 18 months, we supported over 50 families throughout the Scottish Borders, with 80% of referred children and young people continuing to live at home and remain connected to their school and community. We feel our flexibility and the intensity of our Sustain support model is a key factor in this success. The service is available ‘as and when required’, including during evenings and weekends, providing families with the support they need when they need it.
“[Child] is now interacting better, is back in school, and the relationship with his mum has improved. This would not have happened without Sustain.”
“Sustain will be the voice of the young person so they are prepared to have difficult conversations with parents, teachers or anyone else when they have to.”
Social Workers
“I’m being a more stable parent now.”
“I knew I was stressed out, but I didn’t realise how bad it was. I was doing lots of avoidance and going out as much as possible to avoid being in the house with him. I am now spending much more time looking after the children.”

We are looking for a Seasons for Growth Education Support Worker, to work with children who have been particularly adversely affected by the impacts of the Covid-19 virus. This post is offered on a fixed term contract, working 16 hours per week during term time until January 2022. Many of the most vulnerable children in Tayside have lost the secure base provided by attending education, as well as being cut off from positive attachments within their wider family network, school life, and community connections such as attending clubs and outdoor activities. These children are experiencing heightened anxieties including fear of catching the virus, being separated from friends and family and having extended periods of time at home, particularly when housing is poor and/or there is no space for outdoor play.
You will work with children delivering Seasons for Growth programmes which provide an opportunity for them to share their thoughts and feelings within a supportive peer group setting. The programme is designed to support children and young people affected by change, loss and grief. Since its launch in 1996 the programme has helped over 40,000 children, young people and adults. Its vision is ‘A health society where grief and loss are recognised as part of life and appropriate support is available for all.’ We already successfully provide this programme to four schools in Dundee. Children benefiting from our support have told us:
“Iknow who I can go to for help now, before I just wouldn’t have asked.”
“Change is OK and so is being sad.”
“It helps you feel included”.
You will be skilled in engaging with children, young people and families. You will undertake Seasons for Growth training and then; support relevant school staff to identify children to participate in the programme; build relationships with teachers and other education school staff; and liaise with others involved in the care of the children/young people. Are you interested in helping children heal from the trauma they have faced in their early lives?
In Aberlour our children prefer to refer to the Residential Workers who look after them as ‘adults’, so we are looking for adults to join our teams in our Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy children’s houses who can help provide a loving home where everyone laughs, learns, grows into the future and is treasured always.
We work in a way which allows the adults and children develop strong relationships which help the children heal from the trauma they have experienced in their early lives. Our children thrive when the adults around them can be playful, loving, accepting, curious and show empathy.
You must be comfortable working in a culture based on Aberlour’s values of respect, integrity, innovation and the ability to challenge – you must be able to work in a nurturing way, so the children and young people feel safe and loved. A variety of learning and development opportunities are provided to support our adults to be as effective as they can be, equipping them to employ best practice in their work and to be exceptional role models for the children and for staff, which includes access to consultations provided by Dr Shona Quin, [DW1] Independent Clinical Psychologist.
Our children and young people tell us that they would like applicants who:
“Keep me safe at night”
“Are honest and truthful”
“Can make up bedtime stories”
“Want to spend time with me one to one”
“Remembers what it’s like to grow up”
Our Smarter2gether service supports young people (aged 11-18) who need extra help with education. We support young people with behaviours that challenge as a result of the complicated emotions they experience by giving our young people a trusted person they can talk to, as well as someone who can support them with their learning.
Our young people may have experienced trauma in their lives and feel that no-one understands them. Some may have a chaotic home life, and are risk of being taken into care, far away from their own community. Others are already living in care, and experiencing the complicated feelings that come with it. All of these factors can cause a lot of stress and worry. In turn, this can make school a difficult environment to be in.
As a Young People’s Worker Social Education, you will work in partnership with the school and other relevant agencies to provide a holistic approach to the support we offer our young people. You will work both individually and provide group work programmes for our young people within the school setting. You will be based between Annan Academy and ourAnnan Service. You will work 24 hours per week term time, 38 weeks of the year. This post is currently funded through PEF funding from August 2021 until August 2023.
We are looking for someone who will empower our young people and give them a voice. It is essential that you are able to demonstrate an understanding and commitment to young people’s rights. You will have experience of working with young people either within a community or residential setting. You will hold, or be willing to work towards, a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above.

Working hours will be 37.5 per week across 7 days between the hours of 7am and 10pm. The days and hours worked will be agreed with families within the family support plan. Can you inspire, lead and motivate people to help them provide warm, loving and transformational relationships for children and young people who need to be looked after away from home? If you are someone who has outstanding personal and professional values, drive and can help Aberlour Be Brave for children and families, we want to hear from you.

We have an exciting opportunity for someone with significant experience of managing and leading residential child care services to come and join us. Having recently achieved a Platinum Investors in People award, we are driving innovation to help #KeepThePromise, focussing on ensuring our children and young people’s rights, as enshrined in the United Convention for the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), are at the forefront of our practice.
What the children in the house would like:
“We want the house to be managed by someone who will spend time with us and doesn’t always sit behind their desk. Even if they are busy we would like them to make time to chat to the adults and the kids. We would like them to be kind to the adults in the house and help to look after them. Also, we would like them to be kind and happy and not grumpy. We would like them to be the right person who will stay with us for a long, long time.”
Our vision is that our children’s houses will provide a loving home where everyone laughs, learns, grows into their future and is treasured always.
When children tell us about what they want to experience where they live, they talk about feeling safe with adults who know, understand and love them and who they trust. The care experience of our children is our first consideration, and we believe that what we do provides a rewarding experience for individuals.
Aberlour expects all adults to be exceptional role models to both colleagues and young people alike building mutually trusting relationships strongly based on Aberlour’s values – this is a particular expectation of this role.
The successful candidate must be an effective contributor to our vision with unwavering commitment to the work to enable you to deal positively with the challenges and opportunities that distressed children can bring to their care experience. Importantly, we want to hear from candidates who believe that children can be understood and responded to without needing to use physical restraint, in line with our innovative approach to becoming more developmentally informed as to how best to support children when their early life experiences cause them distress.
If you want to know more, please contact John Ryan on 07854 958096 for an informal conversation.

Working patterns will include days, nights, weekends and public holidays. Our rota has been drafted with the needs of the young people at heart, shorter shifts of 7.5 hours per day is anticipated however this may change to suit the needs of the young people.
As a Young People’s Worker, you will play a fundamental role in our young people’s lives to ensure that they get the best possible experience whilst working towards goals in their care plan. Using a person-centred approach, you will provide enabling support ensuring the highest level of physical and emotional care; supporting our young people in their daily living and within the local community.

You should be dynamic and creative and be able to deliver flexible, person-centred services to vulnerable children and families in a way which can be playful, warm, accepting, curious, tenacious and empathetic.

The Aberlour Sycamore Services are based in Fife and are widely recognised in Scotland for providing a range of quality therapeutic residential, education and fostering experiences for some of the most vulnerable young people in the country. The Service is a national resource and as such receives referrals from throughout Scotland.
Education Support Workers (ESW) are key in supporting young people that live in our houses, to be able to attend school. Funding for these posts is made by local authorities on a case by case basis. This means that if funding is ended, either because the child moves on or because a different type of pupil support is deemed more appropriate, the need for the individual ESW may also end. When this happens, we make every effort to redeploy the ESW and we have a number of ESWs who have worked with Aberlour for a number of years. However, the needs of the individual children are of paramount importance and if there is not a child with whom the ESW can be matched, then there may be no alternative but to end the individual’s employment.
This opportunity is to support a child to engage in education, within school, working with them in our Nurture Hub, engaging in holistic learning that encompasses a range of learning methods including project-based learning, Duke of Edinburgh, Natural Connections amongst others. Our aspirations are that our children will attend a mainstream setting, at a time that is right for them, however we are aware that some children can’t manage in the mainstream environment, so we aim to support their learning through a developmental lens that focuses on building self-esteem and resilience. This role is to provide the child with personal, social and emotional support to enable them to fulfil their academic potential. We are seeking individuals for more than 1 child and therefor look to identify preferred skills and knowledge that would best support the children, these include but are not limited to the following:
You will show genuine interest in the young person’s world and demonstrate curiosity about their preferences and needs.
You will build and continually develop a strong, positive, unconditional relationship with the young person as we believe that relationships are key to success. You will be committed to understanding the young person, their past and their experiences and you will be committed to the young person’s ability to grow and change.
You should be a highly motivated individual in order to support the young person to succeed. You will demonstrate confidence in your approach and have a good understanding of the complex and challenging circumstances that may arise for vulnerable children. You will display patience and empathy in your daily interactions and be reflective in your practice. You will demonstrate the ability to think creatively and communicate at a level that encourages the child to embrace learning. This approach will be person centred whilst meeting the needs of the young person.
You will have experience of working with young people in an education, community or residential setting and hold, or be willing to work towards and gain a relevant professional qualification at SCQF level 7 or above (e.g. SVQ3 Care plus an HNC).
We encourage long term engagement between children and Education Support Workers, who are supported by the residential managers, receive regular supervision and will have access to learning and training opportunities.

At Aberlour we believe that every child deserves the chance to flourish regardless of their background and the circumstances that have brought them to live with Aberlour. The children we support are presently not able to live safely with their own families and many of them have suffered from trauma and loss in their young lives. Working therapeutically with the young people, using a Dyadic Developmental approach, our aim is to help the young people to develop their confidence and self-worth and therefore to maximise their potential and opportunities for living fulfilled and happy lives.
This is a permanent post for 70 hours per month working 7 x 10 hour shifts from 10.00pm – 08.00am.
Nights of working will be negotiable between the successful candidate and the manager. Working nights, you will play a crucial role, providing security to the young people if any of them are unable to sleep or become unsettled during the night. This can be particularly difficult for the young people and your ability to adopt a calm and comforting approach is a key skill to help them through these difficult experiences.
Young people have told us that they like staff who:
“Will keep me safe at night”
“Are confident to have fun and be silly with me – who don’t sit back and just watch”
“Are honest and truthful”
“Like football”
“Like makeup and fashion”
“Want to spend time with me one to one”
Our residential service in Inverness is one of two houses that Aberlour runs in the Highlands. Our experienced teams of staff seek to create a comfortable home for the young people where they can grow and flourish, participating in educational and community activities to achieve their goals.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a culture based on respect, integrity, innovation and the ability to challenge. Through a wide variety of learning and development opportunities we support our staff to be as effective as they can be, equipping them to employ best practice in their work and to be exceptional role models for the children and for staff.
Please see the ‘Person Specification’ document included with this advert on our website for further details on preferred qualifications and experience.

You will be enthusiastic and motivated with an appetite to work in all parts of our service to enhance the lives of the children. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and caring individuals who will contribute to the development of care and support plans, working in an outcomes focused manner to ensure that children, young people and their families get the most out of their service. What we will offer you:
Excellent development and training opportunities to enable you to grow and develop your skills.

We are looking for people to join our relief pool who are passionate about supporting children and young people. The children and young people who live in our houses have experienced significant trauma in their young lives and our aim is to create loving, nurturing family homes where they feel safe and cared for.
Members of our relief pool have a varied range of backgrounds and often work in different areas of the workforce. Although experience in child-care is ideal, we would also like to hear from people who may have skills from their work experience in different sectors which would be transferrable and provide a good basis from which to learn and develop their skills, utilising the range of training we provide.
The last eighteen months have been challenging for all of us and many of us are re-evaluating what we want out of life, including our working lives. Relief work enables you to test out your affinity and ability for working in residential child-care and, if you want to take things a step further, there are opportunities to move into a substantive role in the future.
Night Relief Work – if your availability is limited during the day, there is also a role for people who are available to work at night. At night there is always a ‘wakened’ night worker on shift, together with another adult sleeping in the service, who can be called upon to assist if required. Typically our night shifts are from 10.00pm until [?8.00am ] Night times can be particularly difficult for some of the children and young people who live with us. It is a time when some of their worst fears can prey on their minds, leaving them feeling especially vulnerable and in need of nurturing support. So, it is really important that adults on shift are able to comfort them and support them, so that they can settle and fall asleep.
Our relief workers play a crucial role in supporting our teams. This work is offered on a casual, hourly paid basis to provide cover during staff absence and/or particularly busy periods. Work will be offered in one of our four residential houses in Fife – three of these are in Kirkcaldy and one in Dunfermline.
If you want to know more, please contact: Kerry.watson@aberlour.org.uk or Simone Gillespie: simone.gillespie@aberlour.org.uk.

Sycamore Services, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline
The Aberlour Sycamore Services are based in Fife and are widely recognised in Scotland for providing a range of quality therapeutic residential, education and fostering experiences for some of the most vulnerable young people in the country. The Service is a national resource and as such receives referrals from throughout Scotland.
Education Support Workers (ESW) are key in supporting young people that live in our houses, to be able to attend school.
We would be looking for an energetic individual with a very nurturing approach. With some experience with Autism and global delay as well as early life trauma.
This adult would feel confident to engage in role play and reach their inner child. With maturity to have fair but strong boundaries and routines.
Helping the child understand her reality from her fantasy world.
We are currently looking to recruit people to work 35 hours per week (term-time only). Please see ‘Essential Information’ on our website for further details.
