Media Relations Officer

The RSE is looking for an experienced Media Relations Officer who has a strong news sense with excellent writing skills and media networking experience to match.

This new role will be central in showcasing the work of RSE Fellows by bringing our important activities to life in the print, broadcast and online media through effective and impactful storytelling.

Working with the Head of Communications, the role will span every aspect of the RSE’s work and will deliver our media engagement strategy at local, regional and national level. Our new Media Relations Officer will work to increase our visibility and appreciation of our impact for the whole of Scotland.

We are looking for a talented and experienced individual to:

2. Build strong relationships with journalists to ensure the RSE is recognised as the go-to organisation for comments, information and stories.

3. Researching key media targets, developing media lists and pitching ideas and stories to media.

4. Work with the Digital Communications Officer to provide content for a range of PR activities.

5. Working with colleagues, devise content including press releases, feature articles, op-eds and statements, covering work across the broad spectrum of RSE activities and outputs.

6. Receive and respond to media enquiries, flagging to the Head of Communications and advise / brief spokespeople on media opportunities.

7. Monitor the daily news agenda to identify opportunities to act on and share with colleagues.

8. Display resilience and forward thinking, always cognisant of the values of the RSE and its work.

SAHA Policy and Communications Officer

The Scottish Arts and Humanities Alliance (SAHA) is a joint initiative of 14 Scottish Higher Education institutions, the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH).

The RSE has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Policy Advice Officer to support the RSE’s advice activities to inform and influence public policy and to further enhance the Society’s impact.

Working closely with, and reporting to, the Policy Advice Manager, your key tasks in this role will be:

  • To support the delivery of policy advice activity, including policy responses
  • To provide secretariat support for education policy work
  • To support European and constitutional affairs work
  • To contribute to horizon scanning and the gathering of impact evidence
  • To support the development and maintenance of relationships with decision makers

What we would like you to bring

The successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills. They will demonstrate the ability to produce clear and concise policy advice type papers/reports, will be able to work autonomously and take initiative, and be able to work across different topics and areas. An understanding of the working of the Scottish and UK governments and parliament is essential.

What we offer

  • Permanent Contract of Employment
  • Starting salary of £27,000 per annum
  • 35 hours per week. A pilot flexible working system is currently being used so there will be flexibility to work the 35 hours between 0830 and 1930 across the contracted days. There will be occasional work required out-with the flexi-periods.
  • Group Pension Plan with AVIVA
  • All staff receive the following annual allowances (pro-rata for part time staff):

·25 days up until completion of 3 years employment

· 27 days following completion of 3 years employment (+ 2 days)

· 30 days following completion of 5 years employment (+ 3 days)

· You get 9 days public holiday (pro-rata for part time staff). This is built into your total holiday allowance (annual leave + public holidays) each year

Requirements

  • Lead and manage the finance function within RSE to support financial decision-making and ensure compliance with all statutory and related accounting and tax regulations
  • Lead and manage the corporate services function including HR, IT and business management
  • Lead the staff teams within the FCS Directorate, promoting and supporting a wider culture of continuous improvement
  • Contribute to the leadership of the RSE as a member of the senior management team
  • Support bids for funding, engaging in negotiations as appropriate, and ensure compliance with reporting and accountability requirements of funders

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a full professional accounting qualification and a proven track record of financial management at a senior level, as well as a broad knowledge of employment law and, employee relations. They will have sound judgement and strong analytical capabilities and highly developed people skills including the ability to lead, manage and motivate a group of teams.
