Background details:

Longhope Lifeboat Museum holds a unique place in Britain’s maritime heritage. It is the only slipway launching station complete with sea-worthy vintage lifeboat in the UK. The museum houses a wide range of unique exhibits and archival materials documenting the history of the lifeboat service in Longhope. Holding an integral place in the area’s local history and community memory - the museum embodies the importance of the lifeboat service to the local community and the lives of those who used the treacherous waters of the Pentland Firth and Scapa Flow. This is exemplified in the Longhope Lifeboat disaster of 1969.

The museum is undertaking a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to both further develop its facilities and restore its historic building to ensure this important and unique heritage remains for future generations.
