Role

About Refugee Sanctuary Scotland

Refugee Sanctuary Scotland works to prevent and alleviate destitution and homelessness among people seeking asylum and refugees in Scotland. We provide safe accommodation, practical and financial assistance, access to legal support, advocacy, wellbeing activities and opportunities for people to build greater stability and independence.

Our accommodation programme supports people who have become destitute, including people who have received a negative decision on their asylum claim and have No Recourse to Public Funds.

RSS is now expanding its accommodation work beyond Glasgow and Edinburgh into Aberdeen, where we intend initially to accommodate four people across two two-bedroom flats.

Purpose of the Role

The Ending Destitution Coordinator (EDC) will have day-to-day responsibility for supporting individuals accommodated by RSS in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

The postholder will provide practical, person-centred support, helping residents maintain stable accommodation, access appropriate legal and other specialist services, attend important appointments and work towards positive and sustainable move-on outcomes.

A key element of the role will be supporting the establishment and ongoing delivery of RSS's new accommodation provision in Aberdeen.

Key Responsibilities

Resident Support and Casework

  • Act as the principal RSS contact for individuals living in our accommodation.
  • Build professional, respectful and trusting relationships with residents, ensuring that dignity, choice and independence remain central to our support.
  • Develop and regularly review individual support and move-on plans with each resident.
  • Maintain regular contact with residents and undertake scheduled accommodation visits.
  • Identify practical, financial, health, wellbeing, safeguarding and other support needs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Support residents to understand correspondence and access appointments and services where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date case records.
  • Encourage residents to develop independence and prepare for sustainable move-on from RSS accommodation.

Immigration and Legal Support

  • Work closely with residents and their legal representatives to ensure they have access to appropriate immigration and asylum advice.
  • Support residents to engage effectively with solicitors and other specialist agencies.
  • Help residents gather information and documentation required by their legal representatives where appropriate.
  • Monitor progress and significant developments in residents' cases and ensure that changes affecting their accommodation or support needs are communicated appropriately.
  • Recognise the boundaries of the role and refer all matters requiring immigration or legal advice to appropriately qualified professionals.

Accommodation

  • Oversee the day-to-day wellbeing of residents within RSS accommodation in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
  • Conduct regular property visits and identify maintenance, safety or welfare concerns.
  • Support residents to understand their responsibilities while living in RSS accommodation.
  • Liaise with the Operations Manager and other colleagues regarding repairs, utilities, furnishings and other property-related matters.
  • Help ensure accommodation remains safe, welcoming and appropriate for residents.
  • Respond appropriately to accommodation-related concerns, disputes or incidents and escalate serious matters to the CEO.

Aberdeen Expansion

The EDC will play a central role in establishing RSS's new accommodation provision in Aberdeen and will support four residents accommodated across two two-bedroom RSS flats in Aberdeen.
