Wild Things is a charity dedicated to inspiring people, protecting wildlife and habitats, and strengthening communities through high quality environmental education and conservation programmes. From outdoor learning for young people to nature based wellbeing programmes for adults, our work helps people connect with the natural world — and empowers them to care for it.
We are now seeking an exceptional Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation into its next chapter.
As CEO, you will be the strategic and operational leader of Wild Things. You’ll guide the organisation with clarity, compassion, and ambition — ensuring we deliver outstanding programmes, remain financially resilient, and continue to grow our impact across Scotland and beyond.
This is a role for someone who can balance big picture vision with hands on leadership. You’ll work closely with the Board of Trustees, lead a talented and passionate team, and represent Wild Things with partners, funders, and the wider community.
What You’ll Do
- Shape and deliver an inspiring long term strategy rooted in environmental education and community impact
- Ensure high quality, safe, and effective delivery of all programmes and services
- Lead organisational development, culture, and team wellbeing
- Drive financial sustainability through strong budgeting, fundraising, and income generation
- Build and nurture partnerships across education, conservation, health, and public sectors
- Act as a compelling ambassador for Wild Things, championing the value of nature based learning
- Work collaboratively with the Board to ensure excellent governance and accountability
About You
We’re looking for a leader who is:
- Passionate about environmental education, conservation, and community empowerment
- Strategic, forward thinking, and able to turn ideas into action
- Skilled in financial management and organisational leadership
- An excellent communicator who can inspire confidence and build strong relationships
- Experienced in leading teams and fostering a positive, inclusive culture
- Comfortable representing the organisation publicly and advocating for its mission
Experience in the charity, environmental, education, or outdoor learning sectors is desirable but not essential — what matters most is your ability to lead with integrity, purpose and a love for both community and the natural world.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly organised Finance and Business Manager to join our small, friendly team. Working closely with our Chief Executive the Finance and Business Manager leads our operational functions so that ESS runs smoothly, achieves our outcomes and provides high quality customer service.
The Finance and Business Manager is a key member of our team who oversees our finance and administration systems, ensures our communications support our strategy and income generation, and is responsible for our internal information systems and HR.
This is a part time role at 17.5 hours / week; we are flexible and open to discussion about working pattern. We have an office in central Edinburgh but most of our colleagues work from home. We currently meet as a team in Edinburgh one day / month.
