About the role

We are looking for a proactive and relationship-focused individual to join our team as a Volunteering and Mentoring Coordinator.

This is a varied and rewarding role at the heart of our work with children and young people. You will work as part of our mentoring team to coordinate our mentoring provision, supporting children and young people to build confidence, develop positive relationships and improve outcomes through high-quality, volunteer-led mentoring. This includes contributing to established programmes such as intandem (for care experienced young people) and Plusone (preventative and early-intervention focussed mentoring support).

Alongside mentoring, you will play a key role in supporting and developing volunteering across YMCA Edinburgh — supporting the full volunteer journey from enquiry through to onboarding and ongoing engagement, and contributing to a positive, inclusive and welcoming volunteering culture across our services.

The role offers the opportunity to work across different parts of the organisation, building strong relationships with young people, volunteers and partners, and supporting the continued development of youth volunteering opportunities. As part of a collaborative team, you will contribute to how our mentoring and volunteering work continues to evolve in response to the needs of those we connect with.

What you’ll be doing

• Coordinating volunteer-led mentoring for children and young people
• Supporting and developing volunteer mentors
• Managing volunteer processes including recruitment, onboarding and support
• Building strong relationships with young people, families and partners
• Supporting youth volunteering opportunities across services
• Maintaining records, monitoring activity and contributing to reporting
• Providing occasional direct support to young people where needed, including in situations where mentoring relationships are not in place or have broken down

The Role

This role will lead the re-design, development, and delivery of our national phone support services. The postholder will oversee day-to-day delivery while also helping shape the next phase of the service’s development, with a strong focus on building and strengthening a sustainable volunteer-led model.

LGBT+ Helpline Scotland and our telefriending service provide vital emotional support, information, connection and reassurance to LGBTQ+ people across Scotland. For many people, these services are a lifeline, offering a safe space to talk openly, reduce isolation, and access support that understands LGBTQ+ lives and experiences.

The role combines operational coordination, volunteer development and service transformation. Alongside supporting the delivery of high-quality emotional support, the coordinator will help strengthen systems, processes, training, volunteer structures and community pathways to ensure the service remains responsive, safe and sustainable for the future.

Job Purpose:

Deliver and develop a high-quality face to face youth work service aimed at meeting the needs of children & young people through informal activity-based sessions within youth clubs and primary schools.

The successful candidates will work with children and young people aged 7 -16 years from across our North Edinburgh community.

Key Responsibilities

• To develop relationships with young people based on mutual trust & respect (Building the Bridge of Trust).
• To deliver direct face to face work with young people in existing & new youth work provision.
• To encourage the involvement of young people in the planning and evaluation of programmes.
• To assist with service development by contributing to planning, delivery, and monitoring.
• To develop reflective practice and attend supervision as required.
• To assist in the development of programmes that promote equal opportunities and inclusive environments.
• To deliver a range of fun, engaging activities suitable for various age ranges.
• To use a wide range of resources to effectively engage with all young people.
• To ensure health and safety is always maintained to the required standards.
• To carry out any other duties as required, including the possibility of residential trips, holiday programmes as required.
• To deliver youth work sessions both 1-1 and small groups within a local primary school. (Shadowing/training available re this)
• To engage in partnership working to deliver collaborative youth work.

Skills Required

• Experience of working with & developing trusting relationships with children & young people aged 7-25 years old.
• Ability to communicate effectively with young people and the ability to motivate and engage them positively.
• Experience of working with & developing trusting relationships with hard-to-reach young people.
• Experience of delivering & developing youth work in a variety of settings.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on your own initiative with minimum supervision.
• Knowledge of issues facing young people within our community.
• Understanding of child protection issues and willing to undergo further training.
• An understanding of the needs of socially excluded young people.
• A high level of professionalism in the workplace, including maintaining confidentiality at all times.
• Reliability & good time keeping.

Working Requirements

• 37.5 hours per week
