We support young people in East and West Dunbartonshire aged 12-26 years who are affected by family alcohol and drug use. You will play an integral part in creating a supportive and nurturing environment for young people, helping them to thrive in all aspects of their lives.

The post is located in West Dunbartonshire, primarily at our Alexandria base, with some travel to East Dunbartonshire for meetings. The post has an area-wide remit and will involve significant travel throughout the area and some to our offices in Glasgow, as well as occasional travel elsewhere in Scotland. Due to the nature of this post, access to a car is essential. It is expected that the post holder will be required to work some evenings and occasional weekends. This post will be part of Scottish Families’ staff team and be managed by the Senior Family Support Development Officer – Young People. There will be a close working relationship with young people and with local partner agencies in West Dunbartonshire.

The post-holder will develop and deliver Scottish Families ‘Routes’ Young Persons Project, with the assistance and support of local partner organisations and the Routes team; ensure that young people engaged with the project are properly safeguarded and supported; work with young people on a one to one basis as appropriate, addressing specific issues relating to alcohol and drug use in their families, providing advice and guidance, and signposting and referring to other agencies as required. You will be supporting young people to develop coping skills and strategies to reduce the negative impacts of others’ substance use, as well as facilitating weekly opportunities for young people to come together including through ‘safe space’ peer groups.

Applicants should have a relevant degree or professional qualification; with experience of working with a range of children and young people; planning and delivering a structured programme of support for children and young people that promotes their personal development, self-esteem and resilience; planning, organising and facilitating young people’s participation groups; and identifying and managing risk. You should have knowledge of issues for young people affected by family substance use, and an understanding of child protection issues and safeguarding practice. We are seeking someone who is able to build rapport, positively engage and support young people; with the ability to listen and talk to young people from differing abilities, understanding and backgrounds. You should be available to work flexible hours, including some evenings (rarely beyond 7pm). Due to the nature of this post, access to a car is essential.
