Role

Friends of Scottish Settlers (FOSS) is a Falkirk-based befriending organisation linking long-time local volunteers with newcomers to the area, principally refugee families and people in the asylum system. We envision a Falkirk District that is multicultural, multilingual, and welcoming, where local people, organisations, and services are equipped, supported, and willing to cultivate wellbeing, solidarity, community, curiosity and friendship among newcomers and longtime residents.

FOSS is actively seeking committed people for our Board of Trustees As a Trustee, you'll play a crucial role in guiding FOSS to ensure that our activities align with our mission of enabling newcomers to thrive in Falkirk communities. Trustees are responsible for overseeing governance, policy adherence, and strategic planning to uphold FOSS's mission and aims, and fostering our values of integrity, respect, solidarity, empowerment, and welcome.

Experience Required

We are working to set up an Advisory Group of people with lived experience to regularly advise the Trustees on matters of diversity and the support needed by refugees and people navigating the asylum system. This group will be coordinated by a named Trustee and is for the purposes of guiding the priorities of the organisation, as well as, hopefully, being a pathway to Trusteeship for some. To help take this and other Trustee Objectives forward, we are seeking people with experience and skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Immigration and / or charity and / or employment and / or immigration law
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Crisis service delivery (for example working in homelessness or supporting people with complex needs or addiction)
  • Advocacy, organising and/or grassroots campaigning
  • Large scale volunteer coordination
  • Human resources

Travel Details

Meetings are held (usually in person) every two months on a Monday evening in Christ Church Hall, Falkirk. If circumstances require, you can join online.

Travel Expenses

Reasonable, pre-approved expenses paid.

If you have relevant experience and are committed to making a difference, we encourage you to apply. Join us in shaping the future of FOSS and building a more inclusive and welcoming Falkirk District.
