Role

Exciting opportunity alert! Cue and Review "Print Speaking to the Blind" are looking for a volunteer Chairperson, Secretary, Finance Director, along with Listener and Reader non-Executive Trustees to join our team.

As a Board member, you will work virtually, preparing for and attending six meetings per year. Applicants should be comfortable with virtual communication tools and genuinely interested in our mission to support the visually and reading impaired. We're especially interested in candidates with financial planning, fundraising, legal, and more skills.

Case Study

A recent conversation with the partner of a gentleman – sadly blind.

I queried; “Are the recordings of newspapers and other articles of benefit for you and your husband each day”

And the heartfelt answer? “It’s so important. My husband can relax and listen and keep up to date with all the news. I can join him or get on with the household chores knowing that he is safe and content.”

And that emphasis on safety is so important for those in that world of darkness -of loss of sight -and for those who are forever looking after and looking out for them

That is heart warming news for the team at Cue and Review, based in Bishopbriggs, as they work to make life easier for those not so fortunate.

It is so important in an increasingly busy world that no-one feels marginalised – and while the emphasis must be on helping those who have been struck by blindness - or poor vision – the needs of the carer is also important. And those moments of respite provided by a recording can prove so welcoming.

At Cue and Review it is not simply one-way traffic. We are here to help...but in doing so we help ourselves. We see the need, and we aim to fulfil that need. It is so vastly rewarding to know that we are, in our own way, helping.

However, we also need help. We would be delighted to hear from you if you could spare a moment of your time to join our technical, reading or recording teams to bring that extra glimpse of light into the lives of our listeners

Volunteer who got involved

When he contacted Cue and Review Print Speaking to the Blind, Jim, a young man in his early twenties, had heard about the Talking Newspaper service through a visually impaired family member.

Jim was not in education or employment. He suffered from anxiety and had problems with social interaction.

Initially, when he started coming to the Cue and Review studios, Jim hardly shared a word with staff and fellow volunteers.

However, he proved to be a fast learner and when he was put into a studio alone with a mic and computer within a few weeks he was producing top-quality recordings. Also, as this time passed Jim became involved in discussions with the team about recording techniques and protocols.

As his interactions with his colleagues increased, Jim overcame his anxiety and began to collaborate and socialise with them.

Jim still volunteers with Cue and Review once a week, in between shifts in his new salaried position working as a claims handler for a local insurance company.
