As Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer you will deliver the organisations policy and public affairs strategy and day-to-day policy and public affairs activity in Scotland, working together with the senior managers, the policy and public affairs team, media team and other key stakeholders to meet the organisations goals and drive policy change.

This is a fixed term contract until 2 October 2023. The role can be home based or located in our Scotland Head Office, G2 8BD.

As our Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer, you will develop and deliver public affairs activities in Scotland. You will work with relevant colleagues to respond to relevant Scottish government and non-government policy consultations and submissions. Working closely with the relevant teams, you will deliver a range of key stakeholder influencing events and activities. You will deliver internal policy communications to promote policy work across the organisation.

You will be tasked with delivering policy and advocacy activity to support the organisations public-facing campaigns. Within the role you will monitor Scottish government and external policy and public affairs developments around the issues we work on, maintaining a strong understanding of the policy landscape.

To be successful in this role, you will be a strong leader and influencer, with the ability to work closely and collaboratively with a range of internal teams, and key stakeholders. You will be confident in your knowledge and understanding of the policy landscape, and in working with key external stakeholders including parliamentarians and civil servants to deliver our policy and public affairs objectives.

Essential Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Ability to think creatively and pragmatically about policy at both big picture and detailed implementation levels
  • Ability to produce engaging and relevant policy and public affairs content in a range of formats
  • Strong research skills across a range of methodologies
  • Understanding of how to influence policy change, using both formal and informal routes
  • A good understanding of the drug, alcohol and health policy landscape in Scotland
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and acute media and political judgement
  • Strong ability to plan work, manage performance and own development
  • High degree of analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to build effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong prioritisation skills with the ability to manage competing / conflicting demands
  • The ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Scotland location
  • Ability to work flexible and unsocial hours as required
  • Travel may be required, including occasional overnight stays
