We are increasing the Volunteer Development Manager team at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity due to its huge success and positive impact. We are looking for motivated volunteer management experts to join us and continue to deliver high levels of volunteer management support to our branch network. This opportunity comes at an exciting time as SSAFA sees to implement a new Volunteer Strategy and is looking forward to celebrating 140 years of support to the Armed Forces family.

About the role

The Volunteer Development Manager is a regional role, sitting within the national Volunteer Operations Directorate. The Volunteer Development Team are tasked with implementing volunteering good practice through supporting SSAFA branches to attract, recruit, induct, support and celebrate volunteers. This is achieved by working closely with branches and multiple departments across SSAFA to ensure the volunteer experience is a positive one throughout the volunteer journey.

The Volunteer Development Manager will be dedicated to supporting SSAFA branches within their respective region. Our volunteers are highly valuable to us and part of this role is to encourage, inspire and celebrate them as well as reviewing barriers and blockages to local recruitment. Building robust and positive relationships with the branches is key to being successful in this role.

The Volunteer Development Manager will be the regional subject matter expert on volunteering. The post holder will use their skills and knowledge to ensure volunteering with SSAFA is manageable, meaningful and mutually beneficial and that SSAFA is attractive to a diverse base of volunteers.

This is a pivotal and exciting time to join our organisation, as SSAFA seeks to lead the sector in good volunteering leadership and management and you will play a major part in delivering this vision.

Only candidates living within the named region will be considered as regular travel is required. The role is home based, and a company car is provided.

About the team

The Volunteer Development Management team is a skilled and friendly team who are passionate about the value of volunteering. The team works across the Volunteer Operations directorate and has close working relationships with the Regional Operations Support Managers, Regional Fundraising Officers, Learning and Development teams, PR and Marketing teams and crucially, the Volunteer Experience team – all working together to improve the experience and capabilities of our volunteer network for the good of our beneficiaries.

The Volunteer Development Team were developed as part of SSAFA’s investment in volunteering. The team consists of six Volunteer Development Managers, a Volunteer Development Coordinator in a support role and a Volunteer Development Team Leader.

About you

This is a varied and interesting role demanding high-levels of engagement with our volunteers and gives you the opportunity to work collaboratively with multiple departments of SSAFA.

We need you to have demonstrable interpersonal skills to enthuse others with innovative initiatives to attract new volunteers into SSAFA. To excel at this, it is imperative you have a good understanding of volunteering good practise with experience of manging and enhancing each stage of the volunteer journey to effectively implement this in your area.

You will have a high level of autonomy in your role so will need to be a self-starter and motivated to ensure your branches feel well supported. We are keen to work with positive communicators who are very strong on building relationships with multiple stakeholders across a wide geographical area.
