Role

Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) is Scotland’s national resource of expertise on drugs and related issues. We seek to lead and represent the drugs field in Scotland in order to improve Scotland’s response to problem drug use. SDF works with policy makers, service planners and commissioners, service managers and staff as well as people who use or have used services to ensure service quality and evidence-based policy and practice.

We are pleased to be recruiting for a Development Officer – Quality Improvement. This is a great opportunity to work as part of a busy and dynamic team.

About the Project:

Peer research allows the voices and experiences of people who have experienced or are experiencing problem substance use to be heard where decisions are being made. SDF has pioneered and developed a peer research model as a key part of its inclusion and peer engagement activity. This work empowers people who are often marginalised in decision making and in wider society.

A small user involvement team at SDF is funded, through various sources, to provide independent quality improvement and evaluation work in local areas and services across Scotland. This post sits in that team and will focus on on-going work around the implementation of the Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) Standards. Previous projects have addressed people with a substance use problem’s experiences of stigma and the relationship between homelessness and substance use.

SDF works in partnership with academic institutions in the design and delivery of research in Scotland, supporting peer researchers to engage in this process and advocating for research that is designed by a process of co-production where possible.

About the Post-holder and the Role:

The Development Officer will manage assigned peer research and evaluation projects.

The Development Officer will lead on:

• Research and evaluation material development - creating surveys or interview topic guides

• Analysis of the research and evaluation findings

• Production of written reports for key stakeholders.

The Development Officer will also offer support to the wider user involvement team to recruit, train, support and supervise a team of peer research volunteers across Scotland, in conjunction with other team members as required.

The successful candidate will:

Have significant experience of working in the substance use or a related sector, supporting people who use services and who access Medication Assisted Treatment and have some experience of undertaking research or evaluation work

or

be an experienced researcher with the ability to lead all stages of evaluation and research projects from data collection to analysis and production of final reports and have an interest or experience of research in the drugs field with an aptitude for engaging and working with peer researchers.

Benefits of working at SDF:

This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and driven team in a national organisation with a long track record of credible contribution to improving Scotland’s response to problem drug use. As a membership organisation, SDF has a huge range of supporters and stakeholders across Scotland and internationally.

Staff are supported in their induction and then during their employment at SDF to contribute to the work of the organisation and to grow personally and professionally. As an SDF employee you will benefit a range of learning and development opportunities.

An attractive package of employee benefits includes

• competitive pension contribution,

• generous annual leave entitlement,

• sick pay

• access to an employee support and counselling service.

SDF encourage a healthy work life balance and offer a flexible working scheme.

Our ambition is to work together to promote a more inclusive environment, which attracts all candidates and signals our commitment to celebrate and promote diversity.

During the pandemic we have been mainly working from home, but it is envisaged this post will have in-person work and will require travel throughout Scotland and an ability to attend work in our head office based in Glasgow as required.

Candidates should also be willing and able to work effectively from home as required.
