Role

Dynamic Earth is Edinburgh’s science centre and the only centre of its kind in the UK dedicated to Earth and Environmental Sciences. Our mission is to empower people with understanding and empathy for the Earth; to be the generation that creates a positive future for us and our planet.

Our learning and engagement team are at the heart of delivering our charitable mission and deliver a packed programme of events and experiences with a broad spectrum of audiences each year. Our new ten-year organisational strategy places engaging with wide and diverse audiences and delivering outstanding quality science engagement at the very forefront of our department plan.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our team in the position of Learning and Engagement Officer, with particular responsibilities for widening access and community participation. In this role, you will work closely with our Senior Community Learning & Engagement Officer and colleagues across the team to develop, deliver and expand the reach and impacts of our programmes for underrepresented audiences both at Dynamic Earth and through local and national outreach initiatives.

Our Community Learning and Engagement Programme reaches >2,500 people each year through a variety of programmes, projects and initiatives which are delivered through a range of funding streams. Our programmes reach diverse audiences and are designed to build science capital with audiences which face a range of different barriers to participating in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) experiences, and are co-created and needs led.

This is a science communication role where in the main you will deliver impactful learning and engagement experiences both at Dynamic Earth and through local and national outreach initiatives to underrepresented audiences in STEM engagement. You will also contribute to the development and procurement of Earth and Environmental Science resources for use in a variety of settings on a range of focus areas and themes, whilst contributing to evaluation approaches to evidence the outcomes and impacts of our programmes.

This role will play a crucial part in evolving our community programming, strengthening relationships with partner organisations and building capacity to expand the geographical reach of our work. You will be part of a committed and passionate team of science communication professionals, and will have the opportunity to support a variety of other focus areas – including our family and outdoor programmes - to develop your skills and experiences of working with different audiences and programme strands.

You will be an integral member of a dynamic team where you will work in part, to a determined schedule and in part on projects where self-management is required.
