Role

An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen to work within Alzheimer Scotland as a Dementia Advisor in the Moray area on a permanent basis, 28 hours per week. The role of Dementia Advisor is key to our local services and Dementia Advisors are often the first person families have contact with following a diagnosis of dementia.

The Dementia Advisor role is central to our success, in ensuring people living with dementia and their families have local access to advice and support at a time when they need it. This support can involve practical advice, emotional support as well as access to resources, activities, groups and other community programmes that will sustain, as far as is possible, peoples’ independence. Our Dementia Advisors can support families at any stage in their dementia journey. Our Dementia Advisors also provide support to local communities within their respective area to help them become more dementia-friendly and to increase their capacity to support those living with dementia.

Working with individuals and families affected by dementia, our Dementia Advisors are required to have a warm, flexible approach, a good understanding of dementia, as well as skills in empathy and relationship building. Often supporting people on a one-one basis, Dementia Advisors are in a unique position to offer a very person-centred level of support.

The Dementia Advisor in this post will cover the Moray area however will be a valuable member of wider locality team within the NHS Grampian area (Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire & Moray). The Dementia Advisor will be based at our small office space in Elgin, although a blend of home and office based working is our current position for staff.

Developing and supporting our volunteer network is an expected part of the role including those who run our very successful charity shop in Forres. However, there is no requirement for any retail experience, the focus will be on providing support to all of our volunteers.

A dynamic person is sought who can support people living with dementia, their families and carers taking a personal-centred, flexible, creative and caring approach to the role.

Applicants will have an understanding of the aims and values of Alzheimer Scotland supported by excellent communication and networking skills; hold a recognised professional qualification and/or have relevant experience with a willingness to learn and participate in training. Relevant qualifications and/or experience of working with people with dementia would be an advantage.

You will be required to have a full driving licence and access to a car.
