Role

Barnardo's West of Scotland Refugee and UASC Services is working in partnership with Renfrewshire Council and West Dunbartonshire Council as part of its commitment to the value of relationships at all stages of the positive mental health & wellbeing of its child, young people, and family population.

B Wild activities are trauma-informed and responsive to the needs of participants; staff will respond to participants with calm and empathy even in challenging outdoor settings. Exploring nature and having the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors produces numerous benefits: being outside, in natural environments, improves our physical and mental wellbeing in measurable ways.

This project will support Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children (UASC) and refugees from West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire to participate in physical activity in an outside environment. This will promote increased use of outdoors for UASC – our health & wellbeing focus includes a range of outdoor 1:1 and bespoke group interventions such as Barnardo's B Wild project utilising local ‘wild spaces.

In 1:1 work we can support young people (YP) to explore & learn about their local environment helping to create a sense of belonging and confidence in accessing green spaces.

In group work we use emotional literacy activities that use the natural environment to explore what different emotions feel like in the body and to develop vocabulary around discussing emotions.

All the work is about connection: connection to nature, to self, to others and to the community.

  • Candidates should be motivated, driven and can work on their own initiative and in addition as part of a wider multidisciplinary team.
