We are seeking a Befriending and Volunteering Assistant to support the development of a new family befriending project and wider volunteering opportunities with Scottish Families. The befriending project will engage with adult family members (aged 16+ years) who are affected by someone else’s alcohol or drug use, and be delivered by peer volunteers. This is a new two-year post funded by the Health and Social Care Alliance Self-Management Fund

The post will be based at Edward House, Glasgow – Scottish Families’ national office. (Note that staff are currently working between home and office). The post has a Scotland-wide remit and may involve some travel and occasional out-of-hours working. The post will be part of the Scottish Families’ staff team and be supervised by the Senior Virtual Family Support Practitioner.

The post-holder will support the recruitment, training and ongoing support and supervision of volunteer befrienders and wider volunteers, as well as the development and delivery of the befriending project and wider volunteer programme with input from family members. The role involves identifying and promoting befriending and wider volunteering opportunities with Scottish Families, and supporting the development and implementation of a process for identifying adult family members (aged 16+) in need of befriending support and matching these with suitable volunteer befrienders; and for matching wider volunteers with appropriate opportunities.

We are seeking applicants who are educated to HNC level, have a vocational qualification (level 3) or relevant professional qualification; with experience of working with volunteers; an understanding of the principles and benefits of befriending; and understanding of the needs and motivation of volunteers and the ability to adapt to those needs; alongside the ability to facilitate or enable the work of others, and facilitate volunteer training. Knowledge of issues faced by families affected by substance use is an advantage.
