We are SafeLives, the UK-wide charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse, for everyone and for good.

Last year alone, 14,000 professionals received our training. Over 80,000 adults at risk of serious harm or murder and more than 100,000 children received support through dedicated multi-agency support designed by us and delivered with partners. Role summary

In 2022, SafeLives and ASSIST began the Domestic Abuse Court Advocacy project, contributing to priorities 2 and 4 of the Scottish Government’s Victim Centred Approach Fund (VCAF), to provide a consistent and effective approach to court advocacy that ensures victims of domestic abuse have a safe and informed journey through the criminal justice system. The project aims to build consistency in how domestic abuse court advocacy provision is delivered across Scotland via creation of Domestic Abuse Court Advocacy (DACA) Standards, establishment of an accreditation framework for DACA services, and delivery of a new SQA-accredited training block on specialist domestic abuse court advocacy.

To date, via broad stakeholder engagement, academic research and consultation with survivors of domestic abuse, the project team have created Domestic Abuse Court Advocacy standards for Scotland. In its second and third year, the DACA project will establish and roll out an accreditation and mentoring framework for domestic abuse services across Scotland that provide court advocacy to their clients, and design and deliver a new block of the well-established Idaa training block, in partnership with ASSIST and Scottish Women’s Aid.

Working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders and in partnership with an expert practitioner from ASSIST, you will shape and guide work to develop the evidence base for the accreditation process and pilot the new accreditation framework with frontline services. You will also be involved in design, development and delivery of the new training module on domestic abuse court advocacy, which will enhance the existing Independent Domestic Abuse Advocacy (Idaa) training course.

About the role

We have a new and exciting opportunity as a Senior Mobility Planner, in which you will contribute to the development of strategic transport plans that increase accessibility to improved mobility, safety and sustainable intermodal transport options.

You will play a key role in the creation of well-evidenced pipelines of active travel infrastructure projects across Scotland.

The Senior Mobility Planner will work across teams and with partners to support active travel infrastructure programme development. Day-to-day tasks could include managing the continued development of the Scotland Network Planning Tool, reviewing national guidance and policy frameworks relating to Active Travel Strategies and providing strategic support for projects in the Places for Everyone programme, including balancing roadspace reallocation between sustainable modes of transport.

You’ll be joining a diverse Design, Engineering & Assurance Department, who are highly skilled, passionate about what we do and enjoy sharing our learning and experiences within the team and beyond.

About you

You will be comfortable with building relationships with ease across a wide range of clients and stakeholders.

You are able to think strategically and confidently reviewing data analysis, including spatial datasets.

You will have a working knowledge of the principles of traffic modelling and general approaches that are commonly used, in order to interpret key outputs.

Experienced in supervising and mentoring colleagues, you will demonstrate excellent coaching and supportive skills in helping growth and development.

You will have an imaginative approach to problem-solving and experience of assisting in developing ideas for business development.

The opportunity

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable individual to join our Policy Team as a Consultant. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience in one or more relevant policy areas, either in a UK or international context, as well as project management skills and a positive attitude to problem-solving. Your knowledge and skills may have been developed in consultancy, government policy, the third sector, industry, academia or a combination of roles.

We are looking for a team member who complements our existing experience and brings their own specialisms. You will already have developed solid skills in either data analysis or writing impactful reports. You’ll be encouraged to expand your analytical toolkit in the role, with the support of senior colleagues, as well as developing your own interests.

We operate at the forefront of environmental policy, and support clients at all stages of policy development from preliminary research to policy design and evaluation. Our work reflects the experience and passions of our team members. As a Consultant, you’ll help to shape the workstream as we build on recent successes and develop new areas of growth. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the team’s strategy and business development alongside your core role in delivering research projects.

Recent work in the UK has focused on tackling marine litter and waste issues from fishing and aquaculture gear, and exploring digital innovation in a UK deposit return scheme, alongside projects looking at extended producer responsibility, textiles, illegal waste disposal and global policy best practice. Internationally, we have been supporting governments of low and middle income countries to develop the evidence and strategies needed to tackle plastic waste.

What you will be doing

• Policy research and analysis: Clients may include government departments, public bodies, international development agencies, environmental NGOs and other progressive organisations with an interest in circular economy, resources and waste policy in the UK and globally.
• Project management: You’ll manage a range of projects, with the support of the project director, using project management software.
• Client relationship management: You’ll maintain excellent relationships with clients, ensuring they are well-informed, engaged and receive the value they seek from our work.
• Business development: You’ll support the business to identify new project opportunities, with the guidance of senior colleagues.
• Supporting other teams: You will have opportunities to contribute to projects in other workstreams, for example related to circular economy business support or behaviour change.
• Other responsibilities applicable for a Consultant grade.

Your application

In the ‘Skills and experience’ section of your application, please provide evidence related to the following essential and ‘great to have’ attributes.

The essentials

• A keen interest in environmental issues and sustainable resource use.
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent training or experience.
• At least 2 years’ relevant work experience (including postgraduate research).
• Demonstrable subject knowledge related to at least one area of circular economy/waste policy, e.g. EPR, DRS, reuse, eco-design, product passports, electronics, textiles, construction, plastics, packaging, illegal disposal, waste exports, marine litter.
• Experience of designing and conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research projects.
• Strong communication skills, with experience of producing reports tailored to different audiences.
• Highly competent IT user, particularly Microsoft packages, including Word and Excel.
• A positive and proactive approach to problem-solving.

Great to haves

• Postgraduate degree or research experience in a relevant subject.
• Additional analytical skills and interests, for example in GIS, R or other software.
• A track record of successfully managing and delivering projects on time and on budget.
• Previous experience giving presentations tailored to different audiences.
