Midlothian Sure Start is a dynamic, award winning third sector organisation. It offers a quality support service to families with children up to age 12 across Midlothian. Midlothian Sure Start has been in existence since 2001 and employs over 70 members of staff providing a service in Family Learning centres and in the community. We are currently recruiting for a Training & Development Officer, To lead and support workforce development for practitioners delivering, or planning to deliver, Open Kindergarten provision across third sector and local authority settings, building a community of Open Kindergarten practice across Scotland.

Experience of working in Early Years, Family Support, Perinatal or Community Education settings is essential, alongside delivering training and supporting practitioner learning. Applicants must demonstrate trauma informed, strengths based practice, strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively, with experience of project delivery and reflective practice desirable.

Will be required to connect and coordinate across multiple local authority areas.

The Role:

The Officer (Peer Support) will empower students to take a holistic and autonomous approach to community building and facilitate the development and expansion of peer-led activity across the Association and the wider University environment.

This will include:

Supporting school-based peer support programmes of activity in line with the Association’s methodologies and approaches

Leading the annual distribution of grants to students (Student Opportunities Development Fund)

Developing evidence-based guides to support student-led community building and wellbeing activities

Collaborating with departmental colleagues to empower students to lead community building activity (Blether Together)

Working collaboratively with student sabbatical officers, staff, and the wider student body to develop robust, evidence-based plans for future community building events that celebrate the diversity of the student population

Supporting a review of the Association’s contribution to peer mentoring programmes across the university and associated change management plans

This role will also work as part of a team on delivering support for a wider range of student groups and will contribute to our overall objective of providing all students access to diverse, inclusive and innovative activities and developments, in order to enhance their student experience.

You will collaborate with colleagues within Student Opportunities and a variety of other teams across the Association, including planning for Welcome Week, Careers Fairs, National Volunteering Week, Give it A Go, Student Awards etc.

The Person:

You will be a confident and experienced project worker with excellent communication and interpersonal, organisational and IT skills. You will have a proven track record of supporting peer support opportunities for young adults. As the front line of support for our members, you will be a natural people-person with a flair for on-the-spot problem-solving, an ability to stay calm under pressure, and a natural warmth.

You will maintain high expectations of yourself and others, with a passion for supporting students to make connections and grow through wider personal development, who takes pride in your work and that of your team. Customer satisfaction and service excellence will be central to your work with a consistently professional approach to your duties and keen attention to detail.

We are looking for a youth worker who will support young people to reach their full potential through sports and physical activity.

Hot Chocolate Trust is an innovative and inclusive youth work charity in Dundee city centre.

Engaging with approx. 400 YP each year, aged 12-25, we blend responsive, whole-person youth work with specialist resourcing and opportunities (e.g. creative arts, mental health and wellbeing, education and employment, activism) to maximize YP’s participation, agency, and responsibility. Flexible, relationship-based approaches support YP whose lives are unpredictable, even chaotic, and who are often wary of professionals and programmes.

The successful candidate will lead our Stretch project which uses youth work approaches to reinterpret and promote sports and physical activity with YP.

Too many YP miss out on the multiple benefits of regular physical activity. Some tell us they were put off at school (e.g. by narrow expectations, competitive/bullying culture); some feel excluded culturally (e.g. by gender, identity, or “not sporty”); some can’t afford it; some have nowhere to safely (or with dignity) try things out. You will work across three project strands (Inclusive sports; Mental heath and wellbeing; Games get real) through drop-in youth work, small groups, and individual support.

Job Role

The purpose of this role is to lead and deliver our marketing and communications activity. Working with the Communications Support Worker, management team and wider programme teams, the post holder will join us at an exciting time as we settle into our new collaborative community space at Rouken Glen Park.

The role will have a key focus on improving how we communicate our programme activities and showcase our impact and that of the wider community sector in East Renfrewshire. This includes supporting the development of a new website as well as testing and developing other methods and channels to reach a wide range of audiences, including local residents, volunteers, partners and funders.

We are therefore looking for a proactive, creative and confident communicator with excellent writing skills and strong digital and content creation skills. You will be comfortable taking the lead as well as guiding and supporting colleagues across teams to deliver effective communications, helping to build confidence and enthusiasm for marketing and communications across the organisation.

Key Tasks

Working with the Communications Support Worker, the wider Voluntary Action staff and management team, you will:

1. Increase visibility of our new venue and community space, the Community Wellbeing and Enterprise Hub in Rouken Glen Park, and promote its offer to local communities, organisations and partners.

2. Work with the management team to improve how we communicate and engage with local third sector, partners, as well as wider communities, share strategic priorities, plans and consultations, and ensure meaningful opportunities for feedback.

3. Support the development of a new website to provide engaging information, practical support and opportunities for the third sector to have a voice and influence.

4. Work with programme teams to identify and capture impact stories from across activities, collaborations and events and develop these into content across a range of formats suited to different audiences and channels.

5. Oversight of organisation’s marketing and communications activities, guiding and supporting Communications Support Worker and programme teams on communications planning and implementation.

6. Work with Communications Support Worker to ensure co-ordinated and prioritised content planning across channels to increase impact and avoid duplication.

7. Work with programme teams to gather and use audience insights to shape and test marketing and communications methods and channels, improving how we engage with key and new audiences eg, young people.

The Role:

Your role in our therapeutic community will be key. You will manage a caseload, assess the people who use our service and manage their recovery/care plans. It will mean developing and applying a range of therapeutic approaches to meet their individual needs, whether that’s employment, education, health etc. You’ll be the one who sees that everything is coordinated from the moment they’re referred to us to the time that they move home.

As a Therapeutic Worker, you will support individuals accessing the residential rehabilitation programme to achieve outcomes that help create long-term recovery. Using the Therapeutic Community “community as method” model you will empower individuals, families and communities to be confident about recovery.

You will support the day to day running of the therapeutic community, ensuring service user needs are met and the best possible care is provided in an environment that promotes a culture of recovery. Whilst also being confident to deliver therapeutic groups, activities, and specialist interventions in accordance with the TC manual and the needs of the service.

Previous experience is desirable, however not essential. Therapeutic Workers come from many different backgrounds and experiences, and you may have the skills required. We are seeking dedicated individuals, based on your values, willingness to learn new skills and the compassion to deliver the best service possible to our residents.

This is a full-time role of 37.5 hours per week. You will be expected to work a rolling rota which includes day, evening and weekend working.

About You:

To join us as a Therapeutic Worker at Harper House, you will need:

  • An understanding of the complex issues presented by individuals within drug and alcohol recovery.
  • An understanding of working with families, and individuals in the substance use sector or related field.
  • The ability to be innovative and be flexible in order to meet the needs of the service.
  • Be able to work effectively with multi-agencies, whilst maintaining the excellent reputation of the service.
  • Knowledge of adult and child protection is essential as you will be working with vulnerable families in a residential setting.

Harper House, run by Phoenix Futures Scotland, offers safe, structured support for the whole family to address their problematic drug and/or alcohol use, improve their mental health and quality of life. Our residents are able to continue caring for their children while they are working on their recovery in a supportive, nurturing, and substance-free environment.

The service was formally opened by the then First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on November 21, 2022, in a partnership with the Scottish Government. In our first year, we have supported more than 21 families and 30 children, and have been featured as Ayrshire Community Trust’s service of the month.
