We are a community run charity ski slope who recently received a massive upgrade to our facility. Our ethos is to provide affordable access to snowsports for all. We offer 3 main products: skiing and snowboarding tuition as well as our big slope tubing for those who can't ski or board YET. Come and visit us, we're a friendly bunch.

Using the power of the great outdoors and a ‘sport for change’ model we develop confidence, motivation, and employment skills through snow sports. We work with children and adults, schools and youth groups delivering employability, personal development, volunteering, and training opportunities at our rural, East Ayrshire site.

The most direct benefit of our work is delivered to disadvantaged or hard to reach groups. To achieve this, we work with our community to identify the issues important to them, develop and deliver solutions to ensure everyone has access to opportunities to make the changes needed to live positive and fulfilling lives.

We also have a busy snow sports lesson schedule, offer recreational skiing and snowboarding, tubing (sledging) and children’s parties.

Opportunity Description

Your tasks, duties and areas of responsibility are summerised below.

Income Generation and Financial management

· Operational budgets and expenditure are well considered and within guidelines.

· Business targets are understood and achieved through strong business acumen, challenging shortfalls and championing and driving change and growth and seeking new business opportunities.

Site Management

· Oversight and management of outdoor and indoor environments, and physical infrastructure.

· Compliance with health and safety legislation, management of risk.

· Utilities and services to the site are managed e.g. power, water, sanitation, internet and telephony.

· The business and staff teams have access to the tools, equipment and training to undertake their duties.

Staff Management

Ensure through resource and skill, NSASC can maximise capacity for delivering safe, fun activities and generating income. Manage escalated staff concerns proactively and in line with company procedure.

Customer Experience

NSASC’s USP is the quality and unity of our amazing team and the excellent experiences they deliver. Ensure this is maintained and enhanced as an effective role model, coach and mentor.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential skills and experiences

• You should be educated to degree level.

• You must have experience working in a similar role with examples of achieving positive outcomes in the tasks and duties listed above.

• Proven track record working to achieving targets and also setting targets and supporting others to achieve targets.

• Able to take a ‘helicopter’ view of multiple teams and departments and ensure smooth working between functions.

• Comfortable and experienced in representing an organisation or beneficiary group and presenting information in small and large groups both face to face and online.

• Experience with supporting the development of business targets and the processes and practices and cascading these targets through the organisation to ensure people and teams all pull together in the same direction.

• Excellent numerical skills ability to compile, analyse and present numerical data.

• Excellent spoken and presentation skills.

• Excellent PC skills word, excel and PowerPoint and collaborative tools, Microsoft Teams, Jam board etc.

• Excellent written skills, able to compile content via reports and presentations to suit all audiences from Delivery team to Board level.

Our Opportunity

As a Director of Newmilns Snow and Sports Complex (NSASC), you can expect to join a small, dedicated team of passionate professionals who share our values and who are committed to positive social change in our community and delivering health and wellbeing opportunities through snowsports.

Following the recent retirement of one of our long-serving Directors and sad loss of another, we have a number of vacancies on our Board. In particular, we are interested in individuals with a background in the Charities or Social Enterprise sectors, who understand governance, fundraising and the financial and strategic challenges of income generation to fund the delivery of positive social impact projects within the third sector.

We would love to hear from individuals with senior level leadership expertise, experience and skills in the following areas:

• Strategic finance, fundraising and income generation

• Legal, corporate governance, charity regulation experience

• Digital transformation

• Marketing and branding

• Diversity and inclusion of under-represented groups

• Youth work, in particular with disadvantaged groups

• Community development and regeneration

• Change management

• Ability to offer strategic decision and guidance

We are keen to encourage applications from groups currently underrepresented on our Board: women, people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, people under 50 and people with disabilities.

Additionally, all directors must meet the “Fit and Proper Persons” criteria to be a charity trustee. Directors are also expected to be part of the Safeguarding Scheme introduced by the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. In making this application you are agreeing to appropriate checks being made.

The Board of Directors currently meet fortnightly via online video call, prior to covid restrictions meetings were held on site monthly. It is envisaged that meetings will continue to be held remotely, however, site visits and face to face meetings may be required ad hoc. However, geographical location won’t be a barrier to applications.

As a Director you will be expected to guide and support the leadership and management team, sharing your expertise, skills and knowledge. You will also be expected to share in our core values and ensure that any projects, business practices and processes and the strategic direction of the business is always reviewed against our mission and values.

Directors are also asked to support any relevant projects and subcommittees, such as Facilities and Maintenance, Capital Investment projects, Finance and Charitable Accounting, effective leadership and chairing skills at a senior committee level are desirable.

Members of the Board serve on a voluntary basis, without remuneration, take an active interest in the work of the NSASC and choose to attend various NSASC events.

Initial appointment is for a 2-year term with the opportunity for reappointment for a further 2 years.

This opportunity would particularly suit someone looking to gain experience at voluntary Board level before progressing to Non-Executive Director roles.
