The Chief Operating Officer post is a new role that will support the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to provide strategic leadership of RUTS.

Who we are:

RUTS is a charity committed to supporting young people develop skills for work and skills for life for over 40 years by providing employability support and practical, vocational training. Through these activities tangible outcomes are achieved including re-engaging participants with school/further/higher education and sustained work placements and/or employment. There is also a specific focus on developing soft outcomes that support personal development, such as building confidence, resilience, and motivation.

MAIN ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for leading the charity’s client facing activities, policies and systems. They are responsible for implementing the organisation strategy and business plan

The critical leadership role has three primary functions:

  1. Operational management: the Chief Operating Officer manages the infrastructure of the organisation, our HR/People, Culture, Finance, IT and facilities. Whilst leading the operations they will also work across all divisions to ensure operational excellence and the highest standards of business operations at all levels empowering a committed and passionate workforce.
  2. Strategic delivery: this role is responsible for helping develop and managing the implementation of our strategy and strategic objectives across the organisation. They will support our business planning process. They ensure we are being the best we can be, helping the most people we can, in the most impactful way we can.
  3. Special projects: the Chief Operating Officer will lead special projects across the organisation, particularly in new emerging areas for the organisation associated with growth, development, and reputation. The post holder will oversee the development and delivery of income generating projects. The focus in the first 12 months of the role will be to scope the current employability landscape and identify opportunities for RUTS.

They will also be an external face of RUTS and, as such, are encouraged to speak proactively on behalf of the organisation. They should demonstrate strong, visible and influential leadership of RUTS.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance

  • Responsible for keeping the highest standards of governance and compliance with key funding partners such as Inspiring Scotland
  • Support in leading the organisation with transparency and integrity, providing clear and demonstrable leadership to your team and our people.
  • Ensure an effective and efficient system is in place to manage RUTS policies and procedures, maintaining compliance with all relevant regulatory and legal requirements including a code of conduct that is clearly communicated to all staff and reflective of the organisation’s values.

Finances

  • You will be responsible for management of RUTS operational budget
  • Assist in forecasting, financial reporting and financial updates to the board.
  • You will be expected to improve RUTS commercial performance by creating new and innovative opportunities for revenue generation via sponsorships and partnerships.

Strategic Management

  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of RUTS Strategic Plan
  • Develop and implement the Operational Plan; track and report progress against targets

Strategic Relationships

  • Maintain the organisation’s performance and how it is perceived by all relevant stakeholders

Previous Experience

  • Work with young people to identify barriers to positive destinations and empower them to achieve
  • Support young people who may have had a poor experience of education and consequently have difficulties with literacy, self-esteem, and communication.
  • Accountable for updating the staff team of opportunities available to young people who wish to pursue a career in a related field.
  • Responsible to develop and maintain employer relationships to facilitate work experience and/or employment opportunities
  • Expand networks with other training and education providers
  • Accountable for keeping written records of the work undertaken for the purposes of evaluation.
  • Accountable for the delivery of a complete employability service including job searching strategies, interview techniques, job applications etc.. and delivering group and personal development workshops
  • Accountable for meeting delivery team targets in relation to recruitment, retention, and outcomes.
  • Accountable for ensuring there is evidence to support progression outcomes and achievement
  • Manage own time and support the delivery of objectives and targets ensuring the development of professional practice and updating personal knowledge of local and national employability initiatives.
  • Continuously demonstrate and develop better understanding of ethical issues in relation to working with young people. (eg. Confidentiality, Child Protection and equal opportunities, etc.)

Required skills and experience essential:

  • Supervision of staff
  • Able to demonstrate coaching/mentoring experience and persuasion/influencing skills through previous work or social activities

  • Excellent communication, planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage your own time effectively

A new post has been created to maintain our fleet of off-road motorcycles.

If you’re passionate about motorcycles, turn it into a career at RUTS. Just imagine spending every day with people who share your passion for bikes. The job will involve training young people aged 15 – 25 and our staff team. The ideal candidate must have previous experience working on and servicing motorcycles.

Experience with any makes and models of bikes will be considered and you will have a Full UK Driving Licence and be competent in off-road riding.

An ability to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team and have a “can do” attitude. The ideal candidate will possess good communication and IT skills.

Working between our well-equipped Training Centre based in Newtongrange and our mobile delivery units.

CONTEXT AND PURPOSE OF JOB

RUTS provides young people aged 15-25 with an opportunity to learn new skills using motorcycles/bicycles, and other related activities. RUTS is a fast changing organisation responding to the needs of young people and adapting our services to meet these.

The purpose of this post is to:
