Following a strategic review, we recently created a refreshed strategic plan with a new vision, mission, values and aims. As part of this, we have also reviewed our Board. Going forward, the organisation will focus on our five new social aims, and we are looking for new Trustees with the skills and experience to support and guide us through this process.

About you

We are looking for new Board members who can help make Scotland and South England a better place for deaf people. Applications from the deaf community are welcomed, in particular deaf BSL users. Our Board must be fully committed to our values.

The role

As a Board, Trustees are responsible for Deaf Action’s:

  • Overall governance

As a Trustee you would need to:

  • Scrutinise board papers
  • Lead and participate in discussions

As a Trustee your commitments would be:

  • To make the time necessary to read and prepare Board papers before meetings
  • To attend the 4 Trustee meetings per year
  • To attend a strategy day each year
  • To serve a four year term as a Trustee ( maximum 8 years if re elected)
  • Spend time between meetings taking part in email discussions

About you

The Wellbeing Service Coordinator will be someone with strong organisational skills, patience, a process driven approach to tasks and a desire to help some of the most vulnerable and isolated members of our community.

The role requires 1-1 communication with users of British Sign Language, so professional competence in both English and British Sign Language is essential. Experience of working in the deaf community is preferred.

The ability to manage both time and workload is a must, as is the ability to work independently in addition to contributing to the efforts of the wider team.

The role

The Wellbeing Service Coordinator will report directly to the Community Services Manager. They will coordinate our national online befriending service for Scotland, our existing in person befriending services in Edinburgh & Dundee and develop the new in person service in Glasgow. They will also liaise with our freelance BSL Counsellors to coordinate the BSL Counselling service and arrange wellbeing workshops covering various health related topics for the community.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

About you

We have an exciting opportunity for a creative and strategic thinker to join our team on a fixed term basis as Festival Marketing Coordinator. You will be someone with marketing, communications and social media experience who can help raise the profile of the Edinburgh Deaf Festival.

You should be competent in digital marketing, social media, communications, with working knowledge of WordPress, Canva and Microsoft Office packages. We're looking for someone with experience of executing marketing plans, and who has excellent project management skills. The ability to work proactively, prioritise work and meet deadlines is essential, as we’re a busy team.

The role

This role will lead on the delivery of the festival marketing plan. This role sits within the marketing team, so you’ll have the support of the Marketing Manager, and two Marketing Executives who work across all of Deaf Action’s services. Our marketing plan is integral to the success of the festival, and you’ll be responsible for promoting the festival to diverse audiences.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading on the delivery of festival marketing activities
  • Support the production of the festival programme (digital and print)
  • Managing the festival’s social media calendar and accounts, creating and scheduling posts

About you

You will be a qualified accountant with post qualifying experience ideally in the charitable or third sector and the ability to produce statutory charitable accounts is desirable.

You will work with the CEO on all matters relating to strategic financial management and lead on all aspects relating to financial systems, processes and reporting on financial performance. This includes all aspects of charity finance compliance, business income generation. You will lead a small team and preferably have experience of working with non-executive Boards.

The role

To maintain the daily running of the charity’s finance function and to create a finance strategy to develop and manage sound accounting, administrative practices within designated timeframes in order to contribute to the efficient running of Deaf Action.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

You will have excellent communication skills, able to prioritise your own workload and the ability to motivate and manage a small team. The role

The Specialist Social Worker heads up the Social Care team which consists of a Social Worker and Community Care Assistants. The aim of the role is to build and maintain relationships within the deaf community while providing a high-quality social work service to deaf people, their families and carers within Edinburgh and the Lothians. This opportunity comes at an exciting time as currently we are developing a service for children under 10.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

• Undertake holistic assessments of deaf clients

• Maintain a schedule of initial/6 month/ annual reviews for all deaf clients

• Support clients from referral onwards supporting them through an appropriate pathway to support

• Manage the duty service offering support, information and advice within 48 hours of contact

About you

We have an exciting opportunity for a creative and strategic thinker to join our team as Marketing Executive. You will be someone with marketing, communications and social media experience who can help raise the profile of the Deaf Action brand and engage with diverse audiences.

You should be able to think creatively, work both independently and as part of a team, and demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and digital skills. We're looking for someone with experience of contributing towards the success of marketing campaigns, and with a passion for empowering people from marginalised communities.

As part of our commitment to inclusion, you need to be willing to learn British Sign Language as part of this role (bonus if you already know sign language).

About the role

This role is part of the development team, supporting our marketing efforts across our services and fundraising, online and offline. The marketing team works with people across the whole organisation, so you know your work will have an impact. We’re also responsible for Deaf Action’s brand, website, social media and all communications.

This is an exciting time for Deaf Action, as we have recently restructured our team and are about to embark on a company-wide rebrand, of which you’ll play a vital role in the roll-out.

This role reports to the Marketing Manager.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting the implementation of the marketing strategy and rebrand process
  • Supporting the implementation of marketing plans across all services
  • Assisting with day-to-day marketing tasks
  • Managing Deaf Action’s social media accounts, including creating and scheduling social media posts
  • Maintaining and managing content calendars
  • Responding to comments, engaging in discussions and social listening on all platforms
  • Developing social insights and keep teams informed of new opportunities
  • Maintaining and updating the Deaf Action website with keyword-rich copy to maximise SEO
  • Monitoring analytics to measure and improve digital marketing activities
  • Contributing to Deaf Action’s internal communications plan, including content creation for newsletters and staff intranet

Person specification (essential):

  • Degree or professional qualification in marketing, communications, or PR
  • Experience of supporting the delivery of multi-channel marketing campaigns
  • Competent in digital marketing, social media, and analytics
  • Excellent written and communication skills, with the ability to write engaging copy
  • Experience of writing SEO keyword-rich text
  • Ability to work proactively, prioritise work and meet deadlines
  • Ability to develop good working relationships internally and externally

Heritage Officer

Purpose of post

Reporting directly to the Community Services Manager, you will be responsible for the day to day running of our brand-new Heritage Project. As custodians of Scotland’s last remaining deaf centre, we wish to elevate the unique heritage of the deaf community, and encourage more people to engage with and celebrate this heritage. We have a number of existing and proposed heritage projects which have been developed in partnership with experts, including:

  • Deaf Festival – developed with support from Solar Bear Deaf Theatre company, the 2020 inaugural deaf festival was unfortunately cancelled due to the pandemic is a priority for 2022.
  • Deaf Heritage Trail – currently being developed with support from Heriot Watt University.
  • Deaf Choir – bringing together former members of the Albany Deaf Choir with new members welcome.
  • Exhibition – we are developing plans to create a museum space to celebrate deaf culture, history and heritage.

The Heritage Officer will be responsible for working with partners, colleagues and volunteers to further develop each of these initiatives, and to capture ideas from the community to add to our overall offering. The Heritage Officer will be responsible for outreach, creating accessible consultation workshops and working collaboratively with the deaf community.

The ideal candidate will be someone with:

  • Strong IT and digital literacy
  • Experience in a similar role
  • Experience of working with or being in the deaf* community
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and inclusive communication skills

Senior Fundraiser

We have an exciting opportunity for a creative and dynamic person to join our team as Senior Fundraiser. You will be someone with a minimum of 5 years’ fundraising experience (including fundraising in a digital environment) who can help grow our supporter base and raise the profile of Deaf Action through engaging with new and existing supporters. You should be able to think creatively, work both independently and as part of a team, and demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and digital skills. You will have experience of managing campaigns that help mobilise supporters, together with a background in campaign management that generates income to support the work of the organisation. You will be articulate, have strong influencing skills and proven stakeholder management skills to work with all levels of staff in the organisation, our board of Trustees, and external partners. You will have a commitment to empowering deaf people and be willing to learn British Sign Language as part of your role. The role reports to the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of a fundraising strategy that supports our strategic aims and development plan
  • Cultivate, development and grow our base supporter •
  • Build diverse funding streams to include individual and corporate giving; and begin to lay the foundations for future legacy donations
  • Grow corporate income and identify and secure new relationships that generate unrestricted financial support and sponsorship

Purpose of the post:

We have an exciting opportunity for a proactive individual to join our team as our Wellbeing Service Coordinator. Reporting directly to the Community Services Manager and working closely with the Projects Administrator, you will coordinate our online and in person befriending services, BSL counselling service, work with our Digital Inclusion Officer and organise engagement and outreach activities. You will also be responsible for the management of our volunteer befrienders and will assist the Community Services Manager in developing and growing the service.

You will be someone with strong organisational skills, patience, a process driven approach to tasks, a desire to help some of the most vulnerable and isolated members of our community and be able to demonstrate strong leadership skills. The role requires 1-1 communication with users of British Sign Language, so competence in both English and British Sign Language is essential.

Reporting directly to the Youth Service Coordinator, you will assist with the day to day running of the service including general administration work, liaising with parents and other stakeholders, event management, chaperoning and assisting at activities & events, conducting monitoring and evaluation tasks and more.

The ideal candidate will be someone with:

  • Experience of working with or being in the deaf* community
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and inclusive communication skills.
  • The ability to manage both time and workload
  • Strong IT and digital skills
  • The ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, sessional youth workers, service users, their families and other professionals in the deaf* community.
