VOCAL is the Voice of Carers across Lothian, a Scottish charity run by carers and for carers since 1994.

VOCAL's COSCA recognised Counselling Service provides counselling to adult carers (18 and older) who provide unpaid care to a family member, partner, relative or friend who requires help to manage a long term illness, disability, physical or mental health problem or drug/alcohol addiction in Edinburgh and/or Midlothian.

We are seeking a qualified and experienced counsellor to provide counselling sessions face to face and digitally, in line with existing counselling service models and as stated in the Service’s Code of Practice for Counsellors.

The appointed counsellor will hold a postgraduate diploma in Counselling from a recognised educational establishment and ideally have 250 post-qualifying hours (minimum 150); and be registered with a professional body, i.e. COSCA, BACP, UKCP or equivalent. Also, the diploma course will have to be validated by COSCA or equivalent.

*Two posts are available, one post is based at VOCAL’s Edinburgh Carers’ Hub, 60 Leith Walk EH6 5HB. The second post is based at the Midlothian VOCAL Carer Centre, 30/1 Hardengreen Estate, Dalkeith EH22 3NX (and potentially one day at another locality in Midlothian)

Postholders will extend the reach of VOCAL within local communities, supporting carer identification and removing barriers that may prevent carers from accessing support. Practitioners will support carers to identify their personal outcomes and needs, and plan and access person-centred support for their caring situation, their health and wellbeing and their personal development.

Partnership Training Officer

VOCAL - Voice of Carers Across Lothian - is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Partnership Training Officer to work with: health and social care professionals (including in the acute/ hospital sector); third sector partners; and local employers to raise carer awareness, improve early carer identification and ensure carers are seen as equal partners in care and are connected to the right support at the right time.

The postholder will be responsible for:

  • leading the coordination and delivery of VOCAL’s carer awareness training, Think Carer, through a range of formats – digitally and in-person
  • supporting VOCAL’s work with employers through the delivery of training sessions to Midlothian’s largest employers, supporting the facilitation of events and design of bespoke training programmes
  • working closely with VOCAL’s Edinburgh and Midlothian carer training team to develop best practice and support the development of staff digital competencies and confidence.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge and understanding of training methods, delivery and best practice, combined with outstanding digital skills and demonstrable experience of developing and delivering online, in-person and hybrid training. VOCAL is a carer-led organisation employing 60 staff, supported by a team of approximately 50 volunteers. VOCAL is based at the Edinburgh Carers’ Hub, the Midlothian Carer Centre and co-located at several health and social care settings across Edinburgh and Midlothian.

VOCAL supports over 10,000 carers annually through a wide range of services, utilising different platforms and media. It works with partners across all sectors to offer services to carers, who are often caring for someone with a life limiting condition.

The Charity’s current income is circa £3,500,000 through a range of contracts with the Edinburgh and Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnerships, funding streams from the Scottish Government, trust funds and foundations as well as a wide range of fund-raising initiatives. VOCAL’s major contracts are up to five years in length.

Purpose of the Post

The CEO provides leadership to ensure a focus on VOCAL’s vision and strategy, to encourage, motivate, support and inspire staff and volunteers. VOCAL – Voice of Carers Across Lothian - is seeking a Carer Engagement Officer to coordinate and deliver a service supporting carer engagement within mental health services across Edinburgh. The purpose of the project is to:

  • develop supports to mental health organisations interested in better engaging with, and involving their carer constituencies
