The Trust and The Scottish Co-operative Discovery Centre

West Calder & Harburn Community Development Trust is a community owned charitable company founded in 2013 and based in West Lothian. We deliver a range of local initiatives and projects identified and led by our community itself which include a Community Woods & Garden, a community café and shop, local events and a wellbeing support project.

We are currently a team of 10 staff who with volunteers, strive to improve the community around us via strategically designed services and initiatives which are effective in providing jobs, activities and local amenities to help improve and drive growth in the local area.

The Trust has been successful in raising the funding to develop a local landmark building to become a national class heritage attraction – The Scottish Co-operative Discovery Centre - that also helps deliver a range of local development priorities. The main capital works element of the project is one of several interlinked strands that include the exhibition, a shop, café and bistro, event and catering and an education and training programme.

The project will redevelop a derelict Victorian/Edwardian brick building of about 1200 square metres in a sympathetic manner to house the discovery centre. The building design has been developed by a design team led by Collective Architecture Ltd, has secured planning permission and is in the process of submitting for Building Warrant and commencing a two-stage traditional tender process for a main contractor with works hoped to commence later in 2024.

The project is funded by a range of funders that include The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Scottish Government Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and The UK Government Community Ownership and we are looking for a project manager to manage the capital works aspect of this project.

West Calder and Harburn Community Development Trust was constituted in 2013 by the people of our community here in West Lothian. Our aims and objectives are to improve the place we live in, the quality of life in that place and the opportunities available to the people who live there. We have delivered a wide range of projects and initiatives - from the physical (paths, signage and skateparks); the social (community events, newsletters, cafe); the cultural (exhibitions, celebrations) and supportive (counselling, social prescribing, peer support, volunteering for health) – and we do so in a spirit of partnership and cooperation.

After many years of working in community wellbeing, The Trust has launched the Good Connections Community Wellbeing Project, a social prescribing service available to people living within the catchment area of West Calder Medical Practice. Over the last 18 months, we have employed a Community Wellbeing Link-worker to develop and deliver this service, providing information and support to local people (aged 16+) to access services, activity groups, and opportunities that are beneficial to mental wellbeing. During this time, the Good Connections service has become an established and successful mental health & wellbeing resource in West Lothian and has recently expanded into the delivery of a programme of wellbeing activities that is coordinated by our Community Wellbeing Link-worker.

Our current Link-worker is taking an extended leave of absence, and we are looking to offer a motivated, capable and self-reliant individual the opportunity to deliver our Good Connection project whilst they are on leave. Our hope is that the right person will be able to contribute new & exciting ideas to encourage the project’s continuous development and that this could lead to the expansion of our Good Connections staff team – meaning this role offers potential for progression past May 2023.
