Jordanhill Parish Church is a Church of Scotland congregation in a residential area of Glasgow. The church is, under normal circumstances, the focal point for various community activities. As well as providing worship experiences during the week and weekend our church is a hub of activity and is used by a range of organisations every day of the week and most evenings.

We are looking for a committed, friendly, people-person to come and join our team. The purpose of the role is to support the smooth administration of the church and to be a welcoming and friendly face to all who visit and use the church. The successful candidate will ensure good communication between the congregation of the church, the staff and those who use our buildings.

The role will include clerical and administrative functions, communicating on a day-to-day basis in person on the telephone with a range of people, including the Minister, church members and office bearers, and members of the community. It will also involve supporting Committee Conveners operating within agreed procedures to deal with matters concerning property maintenance and the letting of Church Halls to a range of users.

This position requires a professional and organised attitude, excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work in an ever-changing environment, where multi-tasking, sound decision making, self-motivation and discretion are essential.

The post requires 24 hours per week during school term time, with a reduced commitment of 16 hours per week during school holidays. The number of days per week and hours per day are negotiable.

Salary: £14000. Remuneration will be reviewed annually in January.

Church Officer

Jordanhill Parish Church is based in Jordanhill, in the North West of Glasgow. The church holds services of worship on Wednesday and Sunday mornings.

The adjoining Halls play host throughout the week, and weekends to a wide range of user groups including Jordanhill Out of School Service [JOSS].

We now have an opportunity for a self-motivated and responsible Church Officer to join our team that includes the Minister, Organist, Administer and Cleaner.

You will be responsible for ensuring the security, assisting with maintenance, and ensuring the cleanliness of our church buildings including our halls, as well as providing a warm welcome to all users of our church.

Ability to carry and move light furnishings will be essential and you will have a high level of competence in carrying out safe and effective cleaning procedures. Light property maintenance skills, while not essential, will be beneficial for the smooth running of the premises. Understanding and responding positively to the various needs of users of the premises will play an important part of your role, as will your ability to work independently and on your own initiative.

Certificates of Fire Safety, Health and Safety and First aid would be advantageous.

Church Officer Duties Summary – as at March 2022 (Covid times)

  • Sunday 9.30am to 2.30pm - Set up for church, set up halls. Be on hand during service. Afterwards clear up halls sanitise toilets, empty bins, set up for Night Church, close of building.
  • Monday/Tuesday evening (during lockdown this has been flexible*) 6pm to 8pm - Clean and sanitize office, empty bins. Sanitise chancel area and sound system. Test and check emergency equipment, alarms, defibrillator. Stock-take cleaners’ cupboard. Ad-hoc cleaning list. Ad-hoc maintenance list. Re-stock Virabact and hand sanitiser in all halls.

*The midweek Church Officer hours are flexible just now as there is no Café or Midweek service to set up for on a Tuesday evening, or particular groups that need additional security or presence around the building. Should Café or Midweek service resume in early Autumn, the Church Officer hours may reduce on Sundays to 9.30am to 1.30pm and increase on Tuesday evenings to 6pm to 9pm.
