As a Trainee with SDF, you will learn how to support people who are currently experiencing drug and alcohol problems. You will be supported to use your own experience alongside professional training during a nine-month paid work placement in one of our local partner agencies.

The qualification we will support you to achieve is the industry standard for working in the drug, alcohol and wider health and social care field, and will open up long term employment opportunities for you.

You will also connect with and become part of a tight-knit group of peers and future friends who will be on the programme with you. Alongside your Co-ordinator, they will support you every step of the way.

We offer a monthly salary and a fixed term contract of 30 hours per week for 39 weeks. You will be offered paid study time in these hours, to support you to complete your SVQ.

About the Local Support Team

SDF’s Local Support Team was developed as part of the Scottish Government-led National Mission on Drugs, to address the public health emergency around drug-related deaths and improve the lives of people who are affected by a drug problem.

The team offers enhanced support to small and medium sized organisations working to reduce drug related harm, to apply for funding from the Corra Foundation Local Fund, Micro Grants and other eligible funds and support them in developing their organisation. For those organisations already in receipt of funds, we provide long-term sustainability support, to promote capacity building within the sector.

In the first year of delivery, SDF Local Support Team has achieved significant success by supporting £2.73 million pounds into the sector.

To improve the prospects of a successful application, this post will involve the delivery of a range of support to organisations who are preparing a bid or have previously received funding from them.

Objectives of the Local Support Team:

1. Support organisations to apply to the Local Fund, and also support those that are already funded through the programme to enhance their development and build capacity for long-term sustainability.

2. Work with external stakeholders to promote and link the work of funded organisations.

3. Promote the programme and the support that National Drugs Mission funded projects can access widely and encourage engagement.

The Assessment and Development Worker posts are a key part of our Qualifications delivery in SDF and will contribute towards the wider work of the AWTP Project Support Team. People who have experience of drug use are instantly credible among their peers when it comes to imparting harm reduction messages and in particular, overdose prevention strategies. They have a powerful reach in to communities and within the prison environment, which is unique to other forms of service provision.

This post will seek to maximise peer to peer naloxone with a coordinated and supported approach by delivering high quality training to peers, particularly people in prison. The post will also provide ongoing support and further develop a national peer network to enhance the delivery of naloxone provision by people who have experience of drug use.

As a result of this, the post holder will update existing courses and develop more e-learning packages.

• Develop specific e-learning packages with both internal and external subject matter experts (SME’s) in line with current workforce development requirements.
• Management of the Learning Management System (LMS) eFront.

About the Project:

Peer research allows the voices and experiences of people who have experienced or are experiencing problem substance use to be heard where decisions are being made. SDF has pioneered and developed a peer research model as a key part of its inclusion and peer engagement activity. This work empowers people who are often marginalised in decision making and in wider society.

A small user involvement team at SDF is funded, through various sources, to provide independent quality improvement and evaluation work in local areas and services across Scotland. This post sits in that team and will focus on on-going work around the implementation of the Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) Standards. Previous projects have addressed people with a substance use problem’s experiences of stigma and the relationship between homelessness and substance use.

SDF works in partnership with academic institutions in the design and delivery of research in Scotland, supporting peer researchers to engage in this process and advocating for research that is designed by a process of co-production where possible.

About the Post-holder and the Role:

The Development Officer will manage assigned peer research and evaluation projects.

The Development Officer will lead on:

• Research and evaluation material development - creating surveys or interview topic guides

• Analysis of the research and evaluation findings

• Production of written reports for key stakeholders.

The Development Officer will also offer support to the wider user involvement team to recruit, train, support and supervise a team of peer research volunteers across Scotland, in conjunction with other team members as required.

The successful candidate will:

Have significant experience of working in the substance use or a related sector, supporting people who use services and who access Medication Assisted Treatment and have some experience of undertaking research or evaluation work

or

be an experienced researcher with the ability to lead all stages of evaluation and research projects from data collection to analysis and production of final reports and have an interest or experience of research in the drugs field with an aptitude for engaging and working with peer researchers.

About the Post-holder and the Role:

The primary focus of the Development Officer is to project manage assigned peer research and evaluation projects. The main tasks being to recruit, train, support and supervise a team of peer research volunteers across Scotland in conjunction with other team members as required. This multi-award-winning Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) project prepares you for employment through formal learning and in-work placements over a 39-week period – whilst paying you to take part. You will receive specialist training from our Workforce Development Team and have the opportunity to complete a fully funded SVQ Level 2 in Social Services and Healthcare with our SQA Learning Centre.

As a Trainee Addiction/Recovery Worker, you will learn about the substance use field and how to support people who are currently experiencing issues with drugs and alcohol. You will then be able to take this knowledge and put this into practice during a nine-month paid placement within Social Care services.

Alongside learning, you will also meet a tight-knit group of peers and future friends who will be on the programme with you.

We offer £9.50 per hour before deductions and a fixed term contract of 30 hours per week for 39 weeks. Trainees will undertake work placements in social care agencies and will study towards an SVQ 2 in Social Services and Health Care.

Full training and a comprehensive package of support will be provided.

The Recovery Worker Training Project (RWTP) is a new initiative that launched in 2020 in partnership with the Highlands Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP), which supports, trains, and prepares individuals with a history of problematic drug and alcohol use, and who live in the Highlands to work in Social Care.

Scottish Drugs Forum is delighted to be seeking a passionate and motivated individual to develop, coordinate and support peer naloxone supply across Scotland.

This post is an extension to the existing peer naloxone project that has been funded by the Drug Deaths Taskforce Innovation Fund and is an exciting opportunity to contribute to drug death prevention efforts.

People who have experience of drug use are instantly credible among their peers when it comes to imparting harm reduction messages and in particular, overdose prevention strategies. They have a powerful reach in to communities and within the prison environment, which is unique to other forms of service provision.

This post will seek to maximise peer to peer naloxone with a coordinated and supported approach by delivering high quality training to peers, providing ongoing support and developing a national peer network to enhance the delivery of naloxone provision by people who have experience of drug use. Importantly, this will include paying community peers as sessional workers.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a project that can reduce the stigma towards people who use drugs by embedding the work of peers in drug services so that they are viewed as equal partners in overdose responses.

We are looking to appoint a researcher to work on a new study of naloxone.

Accidental opioid overdose has become a public health crisis in many countries, causing annually more than 100,000 deaths worldwide.

NalPORS is a multi-national, prospective, mixed methods study of the effectiveness of naloxone (including intranasal Nyxoid) administration by lay people in reversing opioid overdose. It aims to obtain rates of overdose and naloxone use in its various formulations (as well as how closely real-life use conforms to the suggested overdose response guidelines), develop a better understanding of naloxone administration and related overdose reversals by lay people, and quantify the administration rate of take-home naloxone by lay people to prevent fatal outcomes from opioid overdose.

The study involves recruiting 6000 individuals over 6 countries who have been pre-supplied with naloxone and followed up over six months to determine whether they have witnessed (or experienced) an overdose.

The post will involve assisting with every aspect of this study being undertaken in Scotland, including set up of the study, liaising with sites, overseeing recruitment, ensuring adherence to protocol, administering research interviews over the telephone (or face to face if restriction allow), undertaking data entry and reporting of serious adverse events.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work on a project of international significance.

The post will also involve providing research support for the evaluation of the peer naloxone project.

This post has been funded by the Scottish Government in response to outbreaks of infection among people who use drugs.

The post holder will undertake a range of work to improve and safeguard the health of people who use drugs with regard to bacterial and other infections.

This will include improving both prevention and response. The aim is to improve the quality of interventions to people at risk of infection; partnership working between appropriate services and the preparedness of frontline services and user groups to respond to outbreaks of infection among people who use drugs.

Training experience and an understanding of harm reduction approaches and practice are essential, as are strong communication skills and an ability to develop joint working and a partnership approach. Candidates must show evidence of initiative, resourcefulness and the ability to effectively engage with diverse groups.

We’re looking for people with a history of drug or alcohol problems to take part in a supported Employment programme that will help you take the first steps towards in securing a paid job within the social care field and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Our life-changing Addiction Worker Training Project will support, train, and prepare you to gain a qualification in Social Services and Health Care – whilst paying you for taking part.

As a Trainee Addiction Worker on the programme, you will learn about the addiction field and how to support people who are currently experiencing issues with their substance use. You will then be able to take this knowledge and put this into practice during a placement within Social Care services.

Alongside learning, you will also meet a tight-knit group of peers and future friends who will be on the programme with you, sharing every step together.

We offer £8.91 per hour before deductions with a fixed term contract of 30 hours per week for 39 weeks. Trainees will undertake work placements in social care agencies and will study towards an SVQ 2 in Social Services and Health Care. At SDF, we believe your experience of drug or alcohol problems is a strength, as it can help you understand some of the issues that someone who is accessing services may face.

Don’t know how to use a computer? – No problem. We will help you learn how to use a computer and provide you with a laptop so you can get the most out of the programme.
