NUS Scotland is one of the most influential campaigning organisations in Scotland, securing significant wins for students and promoting the importance of strong students’ associations.

In Scotland we represent 500,000 students, with 32 students’ associations in our membership, including all college associations. At NUS Scotland we’ve channelled that power in the last year to win £millions of new funding for student hardship, digital poverty, mental health and student associations.

In March 2022, a policy was passed at NUS Scotland Conference calling for an independent NUS Scotland. That proposal established the democratic will of students in Scotland via their delegates to the conference to actively explore what independence for NUS Scotland would look like and take the work forward as a political priority.

As a result the NUS board has established a subcommittee (‘the advisory group’) to steer the organisation through an explorative phase on the future set-up of NUS Scotland and its relationship with NUS UK. The advisory group will be made up of four board members, four external positions and four elected positions representing NUS Scotland’s membership.

Appointed external positions

We are seeking to appoint four people to act as external members of the committee to provide advice, expertise and knowledge to the work of setting up an Independent NUS Scotland. This pack includes details of what we are looking for but fundamentally we are seeking people with the skills, knowledge and expertise to navigate us through the process of discerning what independence for NUS Scotland looks like.

The anticipated length of term for this post is until June 2024.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking to recruit the widest possible pool of talent to the advisory group and welcome applications from anyone who can make a contribution to this work. In particular, we believe experience of change management, knowledge of the political landscape in Scotland and an understanding of risk and strategy would all be helpful attributes.

We’re totally committed to equality of opportunity for all. We welcome applications from individuals regardless of their age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation. We particularly welcome applications from black, asian and minority ethnic candidates, as they are currently under-represented as committee members and

Development Consultant (Scotland)

  • Full time
  • £31,535
  • Edinburgh
  • Closing 23rd April 2023

Who we are

NUS Charity is an exciting organisation developing and championing strong students’ unions. We connect our members and curate services to deliver advice, guidance and crisis support to students’ unions.

We do professional differently. We are a progressive charity representing students’ unions across the UK. The sector is inclusive, fun, dynamic and representative and we put students and students’ unions at the heart of everything we do. We are challenging but are committed to creating a supportive and flexible environment which pushes your personal development in your everyday activity.

What we do

Students’ unions can be transformational hubs for students, staff, and wider society. NUS Charity support our member’s development to enhance their capacity and harness opportunities to maximise their positive impact. We do this in many ways, from managing a purchasing consortium to drive great value for our members, to our development activity, supporting the best potential in students’ unions - we strive to make a difference to our members.

Within our small Union Development team we deal with a range of organisational development work, whether that’s being the Returning Officer and supporting students’ union elections, running development events/webinars, helping new students’ unions create the structures that they need, coaching a students’ union leader who needs extra support, or creating guidance on new legislation that will effect students’ unions – no two days are the same.

What we need

NUS Charity is looking for a Development Consultant to strengthen organisational development for our members, predominantly in Scotland. We’re looking to diversify the knowledge within our team to deliver high quality projects in organisational development based on our Quality Students’ Unions framework. Particularly, we are interested in broadening our team knowledge to include creating/supporting strategy development and governance. You don’t need to have worked in students’ unions before, but working in a membership/governance/charity environment would be a bonus.

Committed to Inclusion

We’re committed to equality of opportunity for all. We welcome applications from individuals regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, age, gender, or disability. You can be yourself here whoever you are, be proud of the work you do and build a career in a place that knows different is good.

We recognise that candidates from Black, Asian and Minoritised-Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds are under-represented in our organisation, and that there are often additional barriers present for people from these groups when applying for roles in the charity sector and beyond. We are committed to taking positive action to expand the diversity of our staff team, and if you meet the minimum criteria for a role (at least 80% of the criteria in the person specification) and are from a BAME background, you'll be guaranteed a first stage interview. It is important to note that this scheme guarantees an interview for candidates who meet the minimum criteria and tell us that they'd like to be considered under the scheme. The selection decision at interview will be based on the most suitable candidate, regardless of any protected characteristic.

This role will be based at our Edinburgh Office, with hybrid working options available. You will need to travel to meet the needs of our summer events or other projects when needed.

Benefits

We aim to practice what we preach so we’re happy to offer a flexible person-centered working environment with a great benefits package including:

• Generous holiday entitlement

• Flexible working opportunities

• Valuable workplace pension
