Assembly Trustees

  • Management Board
  • Unpaid
  • Hybrid: Edinburgh
  • Closing 24th November 2025

Become an Assembly Trustee

The Assembly Trustees of the Church of Scotland invite you to consider serving as one of our number at this important and challenging time in the life of our Church.

The Assembly Trustees carry a significant responsibility: to ensure that the Church remains focused on delivering the strategic objectives agreed by the General Assembly, while encouraging a vision that supports both new and existing ministries as they seek to meet the spiritual and practical needs of the people of Scotland.

The task before us is not an easy one. For many decades, the Church has faced declining numbers in membership, ministry, and income. Many congregations are small, sustained by the faithfulness and generosity of a few. Yet across Scotland, the Church of Scotland continues to hold a real and respected place within our communities. There are many stories of hope—of congregations witnessing to Christ's love, serving with compassion, and engaging creatively in mission.

As Trustees, we long to see growth: vibrant communities of Christians sharing the Good News, living out faith with courage and imagination. To make that possible our duty as charity trustees to ensure that the Church has sufficient means to fulfil its purpose and activities.

Assembly Trustees serve for a term of three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further three, consecutive or not. We are looking to people with skills honed at Board and Executive level, who have a sense of call to lead and to continue the journey of making the Church as effective as it can be, in a national setting.

We welcome those in ministry who can bring experience of serving faithfully in parish, presbytery, or national roles, and who bring insight into the realities of church life and leadership.

We also seek individuals with a range of expertise including: Law; Governance; Finance; Strategic Leadership; Planning and Change Management; Impact Measurement and Evaluation; and Digital Technology.

If this opportunity resonates with you, and you sense that you could contribute to the Church's journey of renewal and faithful service, we would be delighted to hear from you.

We would also encourage you to think of others who might be well-suited to this important role. Perhaps you know someone whose faith, leadership experience, or professional expertise could help shape the future of the Church of Scotland at a national level. Please consider reaching out to them personally and encouraging them to apply. A simple word of invitation can make all the difference—helping to ensure that the Assembly Trustees reflect the depth and diversity of gifts across our Church as, together, we seek to serve Christ and the people of Scotland with imagination, integrity, and hope.
