Heavy Sound is a Community Interest Company, incorporated in 2015, based in East Lothian, Scotland. We deliver
services in Edinburgh and East Lothian.
We work with disconnected young people and adults, re-engaging them through strength-based activities of interest
including music, biking, sports, creative arts, education, therapeutic support, and mentoring. By building
trusting relationships, we help inspire positive opportunities for further learning, life skills development,
and future training and employment.
Job Role and Responsibilities:
Work Location: This post will be based in the Niddrie and Craigmillar areas of Edinburgh.
The successful candidate will embed themselves into Castlebrae Community Campus, supporting young people from that
community both within the school environment and in the local community.
The successful candidate will:
- Build trusted relationships and effectively support vulnerable young people aged 12-18 who have a variety of
complex needs, in a drive towards more positive outcomes.
- Provide wrap around support to those at risk
of disengaging from education and/or becoming involved in the criminal justice system, and where appropriate
create sustainable diversionary plans for young people to break the cycle.
- Work with young people to
ensure their safety, reduce the risk of harm, and support them towards education, training, and
employment.
- Assess and identify the needs of young people you work with and facilitate appropriate
interventions.
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with partner organisations to agree
access to specialist support and other resources for young people
- Establish mechanisms to increase the
level of support in communities to help enable further changes in behaviour and sustain positive life
chances.
- Where appropriate provide support to the young person’s parent/carer/support network in the
wider community.
- Work with the Mentoring Services Manager to develop opportunities for the people we
support.
- Work with Head of Youth Services to monitor and evidence impact.
- Attend training and
personal development opportunities as required.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- Youth work and mentoring experience.
- Awareness and understanding of the principles of safeguarding and
child protection.
- Lived experience of mental health, addiction and/or criminal justice system
preferred.
- Experience of family support work beneficial.
- Understanding of trauma informed
practice.
- Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
- Project management
skills.
- Good IT Skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, MS Office) and ability to maintain effective records
including monitoring and evaluation.
- Experience of delivering and facilitating, or co-facilitating
groups.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well with partner
agencies.
- Must be able to travel to our main office in Cockenzie and work well as part of a wider
team.
- Commitment to working in accordance with Heavy Sound’s policies and procedures.
- Full UK
driving license preferred.
- Successful candidates will have to apply for the PVG scheme through
Disclosure Scotland.
