The Royal Scottish Forestry Society is seeking new Trustees!

Are you interested in taking on a new challenge for a new year?

In response to expanding the capacity of the Board and succession planning, the Royal Scottish Forestry Society is seeking up to five new trustees.

We anticipate that you can provide evidence of transferable skills at senior level, or experience of operating as a trustee or non-executive director.

Applications of those with experience of the following areas will be prioritised:

• Communications, stakeholder engagement and public relations;
• Involvement in forestry, woodland management, or timber utilisation at senior level;
• Forest education and vocational learning, including CPD;
• People, HR, employment law and organisational culture;
• Business, finance or operations at senior executive level.

About RSFS

The Royal Scottish Forestry Society, formed in 1854, is an educational charity focussing on promoting the understanding of trees, woods and forestry. Every year RSFS puts on what we believe to be the most extensive programme of practical forestry events across Scotland.

The Society has published a semi-academic journal,Scottish Forestry, since 1858 promoting all aspects of good practice in forestry. All back issues are available to Members via our website.

The Society has a mix of individual and organisational Members. Our membership includes professional foresters and managers, woodlands owners and many others with an interest in trees and woods.

RSFS is also the parent entity of Cashel Forest Trust, a charity based near Balmaha, in East Loch Lomond.

East and Southeast Asian Scotland (ESAS) is a community-led organisation working for justice, rights, and empowerment of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) communities across Scotland. We centre the voices of ESEA people while building solidarity and belonging across diverse communities.

• Founded in 2020 and incorporated as a Community Interest Company, ESAS has grown into a trusted and recognised voice. Our achievements include:
• Leading community research (Migrant Life in Scotland survey) on ESEA migrants’ access to services during the pandemic.
• Delivering emergency food, clothing, and IT support during COVID-19.
• Supporting wellbeing and inclusion through peer support groups, befriending, English lessons, and women’s sessions.
• Partnering with COSLA and the Scottish Government to support Hong Kong BN(O) migrants and improve access to services.
• Providing hate incident reporting and casework support through the national On Your Side service.
• Advocating for labour rights across the UK through the ESEA Migrant Alliance UK project funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust.

The opportunity

We are seeking new Board Directors who share our commitment to justice, rights, and empowerment. As a Director, you will play a vital role in shaping strategy, strengthening governance, and ensuring our work has lasting impact.

Previous Board experience is not essential—we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, skills, and lived experience. We are particularly interested in candidates with knowledge or experience in:

• Governance and organisational leadership
• Finance (including an applicant for the Treasurer role)
• Fundraising and understanding of the NGO/funding landscape
• HR and compliance
• UK policy and systems that shape migrant and community wellbeing

Commitment

This is a voluntary, non-executive role (reasonable expenses reimbursed). The time commitment is around 29 hours per year, covering meetings, preparation, and occasional reviews. Meetings are mainly online, with one in-person meeting in Scotland annually. Every five years, Directors attend a Governance Development Weekend (the next in Jan/March 2026).

About Urban Roots

Urban Roots is a community-led environmental and health improvement charity based in the Southside of Glasgow. For over ten years we have worked alongside local residents and volunteers to establish and support a network of community gardens and woodlands. We also deliver healthy cooking programmes and outdoor learning and play activities for children and young people.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced and organised Volunteer Coordinator to lead on the recruitment, training, and ongoing support of volunteers across our community and environmental projects.

You will be responsible for managing volunteer enquiries, promoting volunteering opportunities, ensuring best practice in volunteer involvement, and supporting colleagues to work effectively with volunteers to deliver high-quality, inclusive programmes.

Strong experience in volunteer coordination is essential. Experience of working in the third sector and/or an interest in environmental or community-based work is highly desirable.

Greener Kirkcaldy is a community-led charity working locally to bring people together, take positive action on the climate emergency and support people through fuel poverty and food insecurity. We deliver a range of projects, events and skills training to achieve the needs and goals of local people – building resilience as a community and working towards a future where everyone can live better and tread more lightly on our planet.

Based in the heart of Kirkcaldy – with a community building, training kitchen, bike shop and garden – we carry out activities across Kirkcaldy and work with partners to deliver projects across Fife.

Growing and connection with nature has central to our work since the beginning. Our community training garden at Ravenscraig Walled Garden is a vibrant space. It offers courses, training and volunteer opportunities in gardening and growing. It also includes a community orchard, with over 100 fruit trees and a ‘wild area’ that is set aside for nature.

As lead partner of Climate Action Fife, we work with others to help people to garden in climate-friendly ways. We’ve helped people to plant fruit trees and we recently created a demonstration climate-friendly garden at our community building garden in Kirkcaldy town centre. We are always looking for new opportunities to help local people connect with nature on their doorstep.

The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to lead and develop our growing and nature connection projects work.

As part of our Community Engagement Team, you will work with staff, volunteers and partners. You will plan and deliver a diverse range of events, training and volunteer opportunities around growing and nature. We are keen to strengthen our ‘Plot to Plate’ activities, so you will work with our Community Food Team to connect growing with cooking classes, meals and food access projects.

You will play a key role developing new projects and activities, both grant-funded and income generating. You will support a Community Garden Worker and an enthusiastic team of mixed-ability volunteers to maintain and develop our community gardens and coordinate day-to-day activities.

You don’t need to be an expert in climate change or biodiversity. We will provide training and you will be supported by a great team.
