Vice Convener – Ramblers Scotland Strategic Committee

About the Role

As Vice Convener of the Ramblers Scotland Strategic Committee (RSSC), you’ll play a key role in supporting the Convener and contributing to the strategic direction of our work. The committee oversees our activities in Scotland, helping to ensure that walking is accessible, enjoyable, and open to all.

This is a strategic and advisory role — there is no operational decision-making responsibility. You’ll collaborate closely with fellow volunteers and staff to help shape our campaigns, policies, and priorities, aligning your leadership with the organisation’s refreshed strategy — which emphasises removing barriers to walking, improving access for under-represented communities, and safeguarding natural spaces.

This volunteer role also provides an excellent career development opportunity — offering experience in governance, strategic planning, and leadership within a national charity.

This is a national volunteer role that involves quarterly in-person meetings, with occasional ad hoc sub-committee meetings (often online). While the role is unpaid, reasonable expenses (e.g. travel and subsistence) will be reimbursed.

This national volunteer role involves quarterly in-person committee meetings and occasional ad hoc or informal sub-committee meetings (often held online). You will also represent Ramblers Scotland as a full member of the Ramblers GB Board of Trustees.

While the role is unpaid, reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed.

About the Role

We’re seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join the Ramblers Scotland Strategic Committee (RSSC) as Ordinary Members. Whether you have experience of effective committee work or are keen to develop new skills, this is a great opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the future of walking in Scotland.

The RSSC plays a key role in overseeing our work, helping to shape strategic direction, guide campaigns, and ensure that walking remains open, accessible, and enjoyable for all.

As an Ordinary Member, you will:

• Contribute to strategic discussions and decisions affecting walking across Scotland
• Work collaboratively with fellow committee members and staff
• Provide insight and advice on key issues related to our mission
• Support our campaigning, policy, and governance work where relevant

This is a national volunteer role involving quarterly in-person committee meetings, with occasional online subgroup or ad hoc sessions. We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds, especially those who share our passion for walking, nature, and inclusive access to the outdoors.

Green Action Trust is Scotland’s leading environmental regeneration charity and a trusted delivery partner for the Scottish Government and a wide range of public, private, and non-profit stakeholders. We work at the forefront of climate action, biodiversity recovery and environmental regeneration, delivering projects that create socially centred and climate-resilient places across Scotland.

We are now seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to join our motivated and multi-disciplinary team. In this role, you will lead the delivery of complex environmental improvement projects, with a particular focus on our Water Environment Fund (WEF) portfolio. Working from feasibility mapping, through delivery to completion, you will ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

You’ll oversee procurement and contract management, collaborate with consultants and contractors, manage risk, project evaluation and reporting, and nurture positive relationships with diverse external partners, including SEPA, local authorities, funders, and community stakeholders. You will also provide guidance and support to Project and Development Officers involved in delivery, contributing to a culture of good practice, inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity for a confident, pragmatic project manager with experience in environmental or civil engineering project delivery and familiarity with public sector procurement.

Borders Forest Trust (BFT) is a charity established to restore native woodland habitats to Southern Scotland, an area with the lowest percentage of native woodlands in mainland Scotland. Since 1996, they have been working towards planting trees, restoring peatlands and other natural habitats, enriching the biological diversity of around 31 sq km in the Southern Uplands. They demonstrate large scale ecological restoration in action, and inspire landowners, statutory bodies, local communities and policy makers to embrace this alternative model for land use and conservation.

Fundraising to date at BFT has seen success, but it has been responsive and ad-hoc as opposed to planned according to strategic need. To achieve their mission, and provide sustainable long-term income, in May 2025 they invested in their first dedicated Development Manager. The post holder has recently secured the Chief Executive post at BFT and as such, we are looking to back fill the role of Development Manager.

The Development Manager will join BFT at an exciting stage, they are about to embark on a new period of strategic development, and from the work undertaken by the previous post holder since May 2025, the organisation understands the importance of fundraising to their future.

They are looking for a fundraiser who will thrive on the challenge of designing and implementing their own fundraising strategy aligned with the organisations new strategic plan, and who can provide the expertise needed to build income across all areas. Trusts, membership, corporate partnerships and philanthropy are untapped areas of potential, so experience across at least one of the key areas will be essential for the successful candidate to evidence.

Location: Hybrid based from the Jedburgh office in the Scottish Borders, with travel around the Scottish Borders.

Salary: £37,000 – 41,000 per annum / pro-rata

Working hours: 3 to 4 days per week, to suit the candidate
