Role
The Young Women’s Movement is Scotland's national organisation for young women and girls' leadership and rights.
Young women are at the heart of everything we do and we work collectively to equip with them the resources, networks and platforms to lead meaningful change and create a more equal society.
We exist because we believe in a society where young women and girls’ needs and rights are fully met. We will continue to strive until that society is secured.
To help us achieve this, the Research & Participation Worker role has been created to:
- Extend our reach and amplify the voices of young women and girls through our participatory research
- Deliver our participatory research workshops and training with and for young women across Scotland
- Create safe spaces for young women to engage and learn, encouraging supportive and meaningful relationships to develop

How you'll help to create a fairer Scotland for young women and girls:
- Deliver our participatory research workshops and training to amplify more young women’s voices, support their participation in the movement and influence change on a national scale
- Support the Research & Policy Lead with the development of new research opportunities that support young women & girls to have their experiences and voices heard
- Reach, recruit and register new participants to our research opportunities
- Work with young women and girls on our research projects and signpost them to opportunities for their continued engagement both within our movement and in communities/wider society
- Support young women to attend events, meetings and other public facing opportunities to share their insights
- Assist the Research & Policy Lead with the support and coordination of our peer research volunteers
- Undertake administrative tasks to support the planning, delivery and evaluation of our research projects
- Create safe, sustainable spaces with and for young women
- Commit to an intersectional feminist approach and break down the barriers to young women’s participation, ensuring our spaces, training and research methods are accessible and inclusive to all
- Comply with the YWM’s procedures and practice including Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Data Protection
- Work collaboratively across the organisation, and where appropriate support colleagues in other teams to collectively deliver the realisation of our strategic vision
- Undertake any other duties that may arise

Essential
- Experience and knowledge of delivering research projects
- Experience of organising and facilitating workshops and/or events, in a voluntary or paid capacity
- Knowledge and commitment to an intersectional feminist way of working
- Commitment to delivering high quality and meaningful experiences for young women on our research projects
- Passionate about enacting change with and for young women and girls through research and policy initiatives
- Strong time management and organisational skills
- An engaging and warm facilitation approach to build confidence and opportunities for young women that have the potential to create positive change, locally and nationally
- Willingness to work flexibly and travel across Scotland when necessary – our delivery is often in the evenings or weekends.

Desirable
- Understanding and experience of participatory research approaches
- Experience and knowledge of youth work principles and approaches and/or experience in feminist facilitation
- Experience of youth participation / delivering programmes that are co-designed with and for young women

- Strong communication skills and the ability to write research outputs in an accessible and compelling format for multiple audiences
- IT skills and experience of using Microsoft Teams, Word, PowerPoint & Excel, and Canva
- A full, clean driving license and access to a vehicle

What you’ll do
Children and young people deserve to grow up in environments that are safe and equal, and that equip them with the skills, knowledge and attitudes to have healthy, respectful relationships. This role works to influence both the policy that sets the standards for safety and equality in young people’s environments (from schools to youth work and the home) and the practice that delivers it.
This is a wide field but is given focus by our organisational strategy, which currently focuses on the behaviour of men and boys, the need to be inclusive of marginalised voices, and feminist leadership.
The role interacts closely with the Under Pressure Support Officer, which co-ordinates our training for professionals who work with young people, and our Policy Officer, as well as the wider Zero Tolerance team.
What we need
The successful candidate will have previous experience in a similar role, in a paid or voluntary capacity, with knowledge and understanding of violence against women and gender equality. You’ll be a skilled communicator with the ability to present complex ideas to a variety of audiences including senior politicians, stakeholders and partners.
You will also have:
- A shared understanding of our vision, values, aims and positions
- Understanding of the Scottish political landscape
- The ability to understand complex policy issues, articulate clear and focused responses, and make judgements based on evidence
- Organisational skills, managing both reactive and planned work
- Proven experience of building networks
What do we offer?
- Competitive salary with annual pay progression. We operate a grading structure based on five salary grades. New employees start on point 1 of each salary grade and receive annual increments until the top of the grade is reached. This role is Grade 3, pro rata of £33,537.08 - £ 37,018.66.

The role
Scottish Women’s Aid has an opportunity to join their Policy team. This is an exciting position where the role holder will be responsible for working on policy relating to children and young people and domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and gender related topics. They will work closely with the Membership, Training and Communications teams.
Background
Scottish Women’s Aid is Scotland’s leading voluntary sector organisation working to end domestic abuse and promoting effective policy and practice responses for women, children and young people who experience domestic abuse. We are the umbrella organisation for 32 autonomous Women’s Aid groups delivering direct services to women, children and young people across Scotland.
What you’ll do
Working across third sector organisations you will build and maintain relationships to input to policy and influencing, as SWA as well as jointly with others. You will maintain good working relationships with civil servants, challenging ideas and find solutions where necessary.
The role includes inputting to and submitting consultation responses, researching and writing briefings, preparing for SWA to providence evidence in parliament, keep our communications team up to date with policy inputs and changes, and input to good practice stemming from policy changes. All of these roles, requiring great working relationships across the organisation, but especially with Membership, Training and Communications.
What We Need
We’re looking for someone with experience in a similar role, with specific knowledge of the Scottish policy landscape and the potential that offers. We’re looking for someone who can work across domestic abuse as it relates to children and young people – examples include the Children’s Hearing system, child contact, the welfare system. We ask that you’re a self-starter, ready to apply these skills creatively to meet our strategic priorities. Excellent written and verbal communications skills go without saying: you’ll be skilled in the ability to engage confidently with a range of different audiences, and be adept at writing to suit them, working alongside colleagues across SWA and our members across the country.
We’re looking for someone who has:
- Knowledge of the Scottish policy landscape
- Awareness and understanding of the feminist analysis of domestic abuse and the impact on women, children and young people
- Demonstrable track record of developing and writing successfully in a policy context
- Highly organised approach to effective planning, delivery and the development of applicable tasks
- Drive to make a difference in a fast moving time of policy
