What the role is

This is a Part-Time (28 hrs/wk), Fixed Term post to 31 March 2029.

Reporting to the Our Heritage, Our Future Coordinator, the Our Heritage, Our Future Project Officer will support the project team in delivering a programme of place-based cultural heritage activity as part of the Our Heritage, Our Future: Community, Climate and Heritage Action project.

This project will provide a multi-faceted, community-based approach within communities and across heritage sites throughout Scotland, with the core aims of:

• taking action to conserve and enhance historic monuments,

• engaging with communities to bring heritage to life,

• raising awareness of the importance of conserving heritage, and the benefits heritage can provide for individuals,

• using heritage as a means to enhance a shared sense of place and purpose, and

• creating a lasting legacy of ownership and ongoing heritage conservation.

What you’ll need to have

We are looking for someone with a passion for Scotland’s historic environment and an understanding of the risks posed by the climate emergency.

You will have experience of working in a community setting, supporting learning and coordinating volunteer activity.

Ability to travel.

As the Project Officer, you will support schools across East Lothian to increase active travel, such as walking, wheeling and cycling. Your work will help pupils, staff and local communities travel in healthier and more sustainable ways.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Deliver behaviour change and engagement projects that encourage active travel.
• Plan, organise and run educational sessions, practical activities and events that help people make positive changes in how they travel.
• Build effective working relationships with schools, community groups and local authorities to support these projects.
• You will recruit, guide and support volunteers who help with the work of the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, making sure they feel informed and confident.
• This role involves physical tasks such as lifting and moving bicycles, transporting boxes and equipment, and setting up activities within school environments. We welcome applications from all candidates and will consider reasonable adjustments to support individuals in carrying out these duties.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys delivering fun activities with children and adults, who thrives outdoors, with a flexible approach to working independently and in teams.

ABOUT YOU

We’re looking for someone who has experience and understanding in the areas listed below. You don’t need to meet every requirement — if you feel you’d be a good fit, we encourage you to apply.

• At least 3 years of experience working with community groups. This can be paid work or voluntary work.
• An understanding of Active Travel (walking, wheeling, cycling) and the challenges faced by communities who experience inequality or barriers.
• Experience leading group workshops and presenting information clearly, both online and in person.
• Knowledge of safeguarding principles and the ability to apply safe working practices that promote the safety and wellbeing of children, young people, and adults at risk.
• You will be required to travel between schools and transport equipment as part of this role. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is therefore needed.

As a Play worker, you’ll be at the heart of creating a safe, welcoming, and imaginative space where children can explore, take risks, and lead their own play. You’ll work as part of a dedicated team to deliver outdoor play sessions that are inclusive, child-led, and rooted in freedom and fun!

Key Responsibilities

• Be a trusted and playful adult role model for children and young people.

• Support children to lead their own play, take safe risks, and explore freely.

• Help manage and maintain a safe, fun, and inclusive outdoor play space.

• Promote positive behaviour and ensure all children feel safe and supported.

• Carry out dynamic risk assessments and uphold safety policies daily.

• Keep attendance records, complete daily evaluations, and help capture impact through observations, photos, and feedback.

• Assist with planning, setting up, and tidying away play sessions and activities.

• Free Play: Let children take the lead and shape their own play experiences.

• Food & Cookery: Plan menus with children, cook meals on-site, and deliver online cooking sessions for our daily snack.

• Building & Woodworking: Support safe, creative building projects and teach proper tool care.

• Creative & Imaginative Play: Encourage role play, storytelling, and performance to bring the play space to life.

• Bushcraft: Support children in exploring risky challenges such as bushcraft skills.

• Building: Den Building and Shelter building is a useful and practical skill to share within an outdoor setting.

About You

• Experience in play work, youth work, childcare, education, or community work is a plus, but not essential. We first and foremost look for enthusiasm and commitment to children's right to play. Successful applicants must however be willing to work toward essential training and qualifications for the role.

This is a key support role sitting at the heart of everything we do, keeping our projects well resourced, organised, and running smoothly. Day-to-day tasks include:

• Monthly payroll preparation
• Processing income and charges using SAGE
• Invoice preparation and credit control
• Purchasing and procurement support
• Expenses processing and travel bookings
• Financial information for grant claims
• Supporting project budget preparation and maintenance
• Bank reconciliation
• General operational support (annual leave, timesheets, etc.)

About you

We're looking for someone with good attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and a flexible, positive approach. You don't need to tick every box, and training can be provided, but ideally you'll bring some of the following:

• Experience managing a purchasing cycle (invoicing, cost estimates, managing creditors)
• Experience with SAGE accounting software
• Payroll experience
• Experience working with grant-funded projects and financial reporting
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
• An understanding of, and enthusiasm for, ACT's work
