This is a permanent, full-time role within Scran Academy with the core purpose of supporting young people to gain confidence, experience and skills using food and cooking.

The successful candidate will help change the lives of young people facing exclusion by supporting them using food and cooking as a vehicle to build skills and confidence. The post holder will support young people from 11+, with core groups aged from 14+, to gain positive experiences through a blend of group work, vocational training, accreditation, 1-2-1 delivery and outcomes-driven youth work. This means that the successful candidate will be expected to inspire and be inspired by young people. Using food, cooking and the professional rigour expected in a kitchen, the post holder will design and deliver engaging sessions that give groups and individuals a strong sense of power and purpose.

The post holder will deliver across programmes within Scran, and will report to the CEO with oversight from both the Academy Programme Lead and the Food and Learning Manager.

A typical week would support delivery in various locations: Mondays, Fridays, and occasional weekends will flexibly support our catering and outreach programmes, either at our café site in Comely Bank, or at various locations from our famous food truck, the Scran Van. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays will be dedicated to co-delivering our Academy and Tutoring programmes in our site at the Gyle.

A full driving license for manual vehicles is essential for this role.

The Role

As Volunteer Development Officer, you will be responsible for many aspects of volunteer development such as recruitment, induction, training, retention, motivation and engagement. Reporting to the Head of Volunteer Development, your main responsibilities will include:

• Promote volunteering within the organisation
• Plan, organise and monitor volunteering activities to deliver St Andrew’s First Aid’s charitable aims
• Learning and development
• Manage volunteer conduct, addressing problems with performance and ensuring the quality of services are upheld by volunteers
• Promote productive working relationships between volunteers and other stakeholders
• Organise events involving volunteers such as meetings, seminars, forums, internal conferences, promotional events and social events
• Deal with conflict, volunteer conduct issues to mediate and resolve
• To represent the organisation as appropriate at meetings of relevant external stakeholders/organisations/partners
• Support the team in ad hoc administration duties.

With thanks to a grant from The Scottish Lottery Community Fund, Child Bereavement UK are able to build on the success of the well-established services based in Glasgow to begin to offer a hybrid model of outreach bereavement support to individuals, couples, families and in group settings, across Edinburgh and the Forth Valley. This is an exciting opportunity for the post holder to support the Bereavement Support Service Lead in Scotland in the provision and evaluation of a developing and extending service that ensures families and professionals can access high quality bereavement support in situations where a baby or child of any age has died, or where children or young people up to the age of 25 are bereaved.

The role will include:

• To support the Bereavement Support Service Lead in developing and establishing Child Bereavement UK’s service as a source of advice and support for families and professionals.
• To manage a caseload and provide a programme of individual and couple sessions and to develop and provide facilitated Groups for Parents bereaved of a baby or child.
• To contribute to the provision of a programme of individual and family support sessions, Groups for Families, Groups for Young People and school liaison.
• To outreach with diverse organisations and community groups including BAME, LGBQT+ organisations to positively support inclusion and engagement of these groups and individuals, and their access to bereavement support services.
• To support the Bereavement Support Service Lead in the selection, training and support of volunteers for the Bereavement Service.

Applicants should have a recognised, health, social care, or counselling qualification, experience in working with children, young people and families, excellent communication skills and be passionate about supporting bereaved families and those whose roles bring them into contact with these families.
