This is an excellent opportunity to join the Scottish Parliament Information Centre as a Senior Researcher in the Environment, Rural, Constitution and International Research Unit.

The Scottish Parliament Information Centre(SPICe) is made up of around 50 staff and supports the scrutiny and legislative functions of the Parliament by providing impartial, accurate and timely information and briefings to Members of the Scottish Parliament, their staff, and Parliamentary staff. It comprises a research and information service. SPICe forms part of the Scrutiny Group and is led by three joint office heads. You can find out more about SPICe on the parliament website. Reporting to the Head of Research and Sustainable Development Scrutiny, and working alongside experienced colleagues in the Environment, Rural, Constitution and International Research Unit, this is an exciting opportunity to contribute in the most pressing and complex of policy areas – climate change and net zero.

You’ll be involved in answering enquiries on a wide range of subjects, including mitigation, adaptation, climate science, climate finance, blue carbon, inter-relationship with biodiversity; and other relevant topics as required.

You’ll prepare committee briefings and analysis to help MSPs scrutinise the related policies of the Scottish Government, and you’ll publish briefings and blog articles on relevant issues. More detail on the main duties and key requirements of the role are set out in detail in the job description.

The Scottish Parliament has an organisation-wide climate change and sustainable development programme –enhancing scrutiny is a fundamental part of that work, and you will be involved in the ‘pathway’ for delivery of this work. This will involve helping building capacity across key parliamentary decision-making bodies, such as the Conveners Group, and Leadership Group.

About You

You’ll have detailed subject knowledge of climate change and net zero policy areas, and considerable relevant experience working in analysis, research or policy development. You will also have a degree in a relevant subject or equivalent experience.

You’ll be able to communicate complex issues with brevity, accuracy and impartiality, both orally and in writing, to tight deadlines.

You will demonstrate a high level of personal credibility with excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.

Stage 2

After shortlisting, we’ll invite you to take part in a remote timed written assessment and we’ll offer you a selection of time slots to choose from. At the final stage, you’ll be invited to attend a virtual panel interview and will also be asked to deliver a presentation. Interviews will be held between 16 and 17 June 2022 although this is subject to change.
