Role

Has your proven senior management level experience been gained while providing strategic and operational oversight to a range of services and functions and leading and motivating a variety of multi-disciplinary teams? Then join Shelter Scotland as Head of Services and you could soon be responsible for the strategic and operational oversight of the services and functions we provide in the fight against bad housing and homelessness.

About Shelter Scotland

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet over a million people in Scotland struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

At Shelter Scotland we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.

We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter Scotland and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the Team

Part of a wider Operations Department, Shelter Scotland’s Services team leads our crucial frontline work in response to individuals and households directly affected by the housing emergency. The provision of these services isn’t a destination or an end in itself, but rather it’s an important part of our journey towards driving systemic change. Evidence, insight, outcomes, and impact – rather than volume, service targets and KPIs - are our success measures. As Head of Services, we’ll look to you to think differently about our services and the strategic role they play within the organisation.

About the role

A key member of the Senior Management team, you’ll be responsible for Shelter Scotland’s services department and its various functions. Indeed, we’ll rely on you to develop, lead and deliver the operational plan for services within the context of the Shelter Scotland strategic plan and lead and inspire a team of managers to deliver high quality services. You’ll also get to contribute to the growth and organisational development of our services across Scotland and help deliver key internal projects and programmes that will enable us to achieve our ambitious strategy. Leading on quality assurance, evidence, impact, insight and evaluation, bringing expertise and leadership to our strategic plan, operational delivery, practice development, quality assurance, insight and evaluation and making tactical and operational decisions in pursuit of our strategic purpose – all are aspects of this high profile role.

About you

A visible and dynamic leader with a proven ability to develop internal and external networks and partnerships that can help an organisation and its services deliver strategic impact, you have significant experience of leading high performing teams. You’re also a strategic thinker and visionary who is used to managing change. What’s more, you’re curious and analytical, understand the role of data and evidence in services and have a flair for deploying evidence and insight for maximum impact. The interpersonal skills it takes to engage and inspire a range of stakeholders are essential too, in a position that will be pivotal to the success of our crucial frontline work.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, payroll giving, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter Scotland helps over half a million people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help.
