This is an opportunity to join a small, dynamic, ambitious, and welcoming team, based in Scotland, that believes in the transformative power of youth work and the power of partnerships.
We are looking for an experienced fundraiser, with specialist knowledge of working with Trusts & Foundations and major donors and a strong track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts. This role will be crucial in raising funds to support the charity’s strategic growth in Scotland to increase access to DofE and ensure all young people have the opportunity to take part.
We are looking for someone with knowledge of the Scottish education system, within a wider policy context, as well as a good understanding of working with Local Authorities. Experience of working on consortium bids would be beneficial.
Working closely with the Director, you will maximise funding opportunities and design bids which meet the needs of DofE’s operational activity in Scotland. You will be responsible for maintaining and growing unrestricted and restricted income, developing relationships with existing and prospective donors, and work closely with the Head of Philanthropy on the development and delivery of the philanthropy strategy in Scotland.
The teams you’d be working with:
The Scotland Team
The DofE Scotland team covers DofE activity across the length and breadth of Scotland, working with over 160 Licensed Organisations and 3,500 adult leaders, to support more than 30,000 young people in their DofE journey.
It’s an exciting time to join the Scotland team. As part of the charity’s Youth Without Limits strategy, the team has ambitious plans for growth with new and innovative projects in the pipeline to increase access to DofE, particularly for marginalised young people.
The Philanthropy and Major Giving Team
The Philanthropy and Major Giving team is responsible for an annual budget of at least £3m with an ambition to grow this annually to at least £5m by 2025. During 2021/22 the team doubled its target after the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh provided a significant opportunity to raise both awareness, and the profile of the charity.
The Philanthropy and Major Giving team looks after a variety of relationships with high-net-worth individuals, family trusts and foundations, many of whom are long-term supporters of the charity. The team is proactive when it comes to new business, seeking opportunities from our current networks and events. We collaborate with multiple internal stakeholders including our CEO and Executive Leadership Team (ELT), Trustees and Regional Directors.
You will be Responsible for:
• Work with the Scotland Director and Head of Philanthropy to develop a strategy to grow fundraising income over the next three years in Scotland.
• Work with the Prospect Research Development Manager to ensure a strong and diverse pipeline is developed and managed.
• Secure significant new and sustainable income, through multi-year pledges, from Trusts and Foundations and individual philanthropists.
• Develop strong, long-standing relationships with current and prospective supporters, engaging them in our work and understanding their motivations to give, as well as maximising their involvement in advocating for DofE and facilitating introductions to support fundraising efforts.
• Attend high level cultivation events/meetings, representing the DofE with passion and integrity.
We’re looking for someone who:
• Energy, enthusiasm, and a passion for people
• Holds strong interpersonal skills with demonstrable success in fundraising, networking and relationship building at the very highest level.
• Proven experience in generating new business, ideally six figures and above, including multi-year gifts, and managing and growing a diverse portfolio.
• Exceptional written (including proposal/grant writing) and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders.
• Success in initiating and leading on new ideas and projects.
• Ability to plan and prioritise to deliver work to agreed deadlines.
The role is home-based, but we anticipate regular travel across the country to attend meetings and/or training. You will need to have an appropriate home office set up and live within the region with access to a vehicle.
We offer excellent staff benefits including a generous pension contribution, flexible working, Heath care cash plan, life assurance, attractive holiday package, ongoing training, and an employee assistance programme.

About DofE
Since its launch in 1956, the DofE has empowered millions of young people to become the very best they can be. It was established by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, our Patron, and is still guided by the same set of principles he laid down.
The flexibility and adaptability of DofE have allowed the DofE to spread around the world. We operate through a social franchise model in the UK, licensing and supporting a wide range of organisations to deliver DofE programmes to hundreds of thousands of young people every year.
Despite the disruption caused by the COVID-19 outbreak our ambition to grow the number of young people who can access a DofE programme remains unchanged and we continue to engage new partners and develop innovative ways of working with businesses, the voluntary sector, and policymakers across the UK to ensure that any young person who wants to do their DofE can do so. Diversity, equality & inclusion
The DofE is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive staff team and we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
We recruit, develop, promote and value people and the DofE is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to meet the changing needs and aspirations of the most diverse generation of young adults ever, our staff need a range of perspectives, skills, and lived experience.
While we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds to join our passionate and friendly team, at present people of colour, disabled people, and people under 25 are not as well represented as we would like. As such we particularly encourage applicants from these backgrounds.
