Children First, Scotland’s national children’s charity, is seeking to appoint a part-time (17.5 hours) Support line Service Manager. By joining our team, you will help us stand up for children, keep them safe and support them to recover from trauma and abuse through our national and local services.

The role

Based in Edinburgh, with hybrid working an option, the role involves leading on the day-to-day implementation, management, development and growth of our free confidential support line for families, carers and professionals in Scotland.

Today’s generation are facing unprecedented challenges. From mental health, money worries and online harm, to struggles at school, our support line can offer emotional, practical and financial support to any family in Scotland. We also offer advice to anyone who is concerned about a child’s wellbeing.

Taking a child-centred approach, you will work to ensure the safety of children and young people by protecting and promoting their rights.

What we are looking for

You will be an inspiring leader and will possess a degree or diploma in social work, or equivalent professional qualification at SCQF level 9, in addition to recent significant experience in a relevant practice area relating to young people. Experience working in mental health, emotional wellbeing or trauma-informed support services is desirable.

What you can expect from us

As well as a rewarding career and development opportunities, we offer 40 days annual leave per year pro rata, a contributory pension scheme, generous maternity/adoption and paternity leave, flexible working opportunities and wellbeing support.

With a supportive and inclusive working environment, the salary for this role is £42,500 - £48,900 pro rate per annum covering 17.5 hours per week (21,250 to £24,450).

Financial Leadership

  • Lead all aspects of the charity's financial management.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and cashflow projections.

  • Support budget holders in understanding and managing finances.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare monthly management accounts.
  • Produce quarterly reports for the Board of Trustees.

Fund Accounting and Grant Management

  • Maintain accurate accounting records within the charity accounting system Xero
  • Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds.

  • Maintain accurate records for grant-funded projects.

Statutory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with OSCR requirements and Charity SORP.
  • Liaise with auditors or independent examiners.
  • Coordinate year-end accounts preparation.
  • Oversee payroll and statutory reporting obligations.

Payroll and Banking

  • Oversee the charity bank accounts to ensure that all payments and receipts are properly authorised and optimum cashflow is achieved
  • Oversee payroll processes and pension administration.
  • Authorise payments in accordance with financial controls.
  • Manage relationships with banks and financial service providers.

Support the Board of Trustees

  • Set agenda for Board meetings, in conjunction with Chair of Board of Trustees

  • Support the Finance, Audit and Risk Subcommittee; arrange meetings, prepare reports collate and circulate papers, take minutes and maintain records.

  • Manage contracts for IT, telecommunications, insurance, and other services

This role offers significant autonomy, influence and the opportunity to shape financial stewardship across the organisation.

About You

We are looking for someone who brings:

  • A professional accountancy qualification (ACCA, CIMA, ICAS or equivalent)
  • Significant experience in public sector financial management
  • Strong knowledge of the Scottish Public Finance Manual (SPFM) and Scottish Government Pay Policy
  • Experience managing payroll and related processes
  • Excellent analytical, communication and influencing skills
  • The ability to work independently across a wide remit
