Mission Statement

Our long-term vision is to end youth homelessness. Our more immediate mission is to ensure that every young person in Scotland has access to expert youth specific services to assist them to avoid, resolve and move on from homelessness, making it rare, brief, and non-recurring.

Context

The Upstream Project Worker plays a key role in delivering early intervention and homelessness prevention support to young people within secondary schools. Working directly with young people aged approximately 14–18, the Project Worker provides flexible, relationship-based one-to-one support alongside informal school drop-ins and targeted interventions. The focus is on building trust, creating a safe space to talk and supporting young people to navigate challenges such as family conflict, emotional wellbeing, identity, school engagement and housing instability before situations reach crisis point.

The role also involves working closely with families and school staff to ensure young people are supported in a joined-up way. This includes contributing to multi-agency discussions, supporting early identification of need through school surveys and triage processes and linking young people into appropriate services such as counselling, housing support, welfare advice and wider community resources. Practical support is a key part of the role, alongside future planning work such as CV building, employability and preparation for post-school transitions.

The successful candidate will provide person-centred practical support to people returning to their communities. Working with Throughcare Prison Workers and partner organisations, they will help coordinate pre-release planning, support smooth transitions, and connect individuals with local, specialist and community-based services.

The postholder will build trusting relationships, take a compassionate and non-judgemental approach, and work proactively with partners to achieve the best outcomes. They must also be flexible in supporting both local and wider service delivery as needs change.

The Role:

Your role in our therapeutic community will be key. You will manage a caseload, assess the people who use our service and manage their recovery/care plans. It will mean developing and applying a range of therapeutic approaches to meet their individual needs, whether that’s employment, education, health etc. You’ll be the one who sees that everything is coordinated from the moment they’re referred to us to the time that they move home.

As a Therapeutic Worker, you will support individuals accessing the residential rehabilitation programme to achieve outcomes that help create long-term recovery. Using the Therapeutic Community “community as method” model you will empower individuals, families and communities to be confident about recovery.

You will support the day to day running of the therapeutic community, ensuring service user needs are met and the best possible care is provided in an environment that promotes a culture of recovery. Whilst also being confident to deliver therapeutic groups, activities, and specialist interventions in accordance with the TC manual and the needs of the service.

Previous experience is desirable, however not essential. Therapeutic Workers come from many different backgrounds and experiences, and you may have the skills required. We are seeking dedicated individuals, based on your values, willingness to learn new skills and the compassion to deliver the best service possible to our residents.

This is a full-time role of 37.5 hours per week. You will be expected to work a rolling rota which includes day, evening and weekend working.

About You:

  • An understanding of the complex issues presented by individuals within drug and alcohol recovery.
  • An understanding of working with families, and individuals in the substance use sector or related field.
  • The ability to be innovative and be flexible in order to meet the needs of the service.
  • Be able to work effectively with multi-agencies, whilst maintaining the excellent reputation of the service.
  • Knowledge of adult and child protection is essential as you will be working with vulnerable families in a residential setting.

Harper House, run by Phoenix Futures Scotland, offers safe, structured support for the whole family to address their problematic drug and/or alcohol use, improve their mental health and quality of life. Our residents are able to continue caring for their children while they are working on their recovery in a supportive, nurturing, and substance-free environment.

The service was formally opened by the then First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on November 21, 2022, in a partnership with the Scottish Government. In our first year, we have supported more than 21 families and 30 children, and have been featured as Ayrshire Community Trust’s service of the month.

  • ​​Provide one-to-one support for participants, identifying and removing barriers to participation and supporting them towards their individual goals

You will co-ordinate the users of our service tasks and activities. You will provide waking night cover, ensuring that risk is monitored and minimised. Hot Chocolate Trust is an innovative and inclusive youth work charity in Dundee city centre.

Engaging with approx. 400 YP each year, aged 12-25, we blend responsive, whole-person youth work with specialist resourcing and opportunities (e.g. creative arts, mental health and wellbeing, education and employment, activism) to maximize YP’s participation, agency, and responsibility. Flexible, relationship-based approaches support YP whose lives are unpredictable, even chaotic, and who are often wary of professionals and programmes.

The successful candidate will lead our Stretch project which uses youth work approaches to reinterpret and promote sports and physical activity with YP.

Too many YP miss out on the multiple benefits of regular physical activity. Some tell us they were put off at school (e.g. by narrow expectations, competitive/bullying culture); some feel excluded culturally (e.g. by gender, identity, or “not sporty”); some can’t afford it; some have nowhere to safely (or with dignity) try things out. You will work across three project strands (Inclusive sports; Mental heath and wellbeing; Games get real) through drop-in youth work, small groups, and individual support.
