About the team

Our Policy & Participation Team helps develop Cyrenians’ work to influence policy and systems change through learning from lived and professional experience.

Based within Cyrenians’ Outreach pillar, we work closely with services across the whole organisation, as well as external stakeholders and partners, including national and local government, funders and other third sector organisations.

The team currently consists of a Policy & Participation Manager and Youth Participation Lead.

We cover three main projects:

  • The Scottish Frontline Network: Part of a UK wide network for frontline professionals who support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. We facilitate free events and training opportunities, providing a regular opportunity for frontline workers in Scotland to network, share expertise and link to policy makers.
  • All in for Change: A platform for lived and professional experience of homelessness in Scotland. The programme is co-facilitated by Cyrenians and Homeless Network Scotland and led by the Change Team – a group of around 25 people who bring their own unique experience and expertise of homelessness to influence policy change.
  • Youth Participation: taking a youth work approach, we provide opportunities for young people supported by Cyrenians to share their experience and expertise and influence change in policy and practice in areas such as youth homelessness, The Promise, neurodiversity etc.

In addition to delivering the projects above, the team works closely with the Press & Public Affairs Manager on influencing opportunities and – when capacity allows – supports other policy and participation initiatives across Cyrenians’ services, e.g. cross-organisational responses to public policy consultations.

About the role

This is a new role created to mainly support delivery on two of our participation projects: the Scottish Frontline Network and All in For Change.

Working closely with the Policy & Participation Manager, you will deliver activities across both projects. The main focus will be to create safe and inclusive ways for people with experience of homelessness and frontline staff to share their expertise and influence change. Key activities will include organising and facilitating various types of engaging events, workshops, focus groups and meetings (both online and in-person) for frontline professionals and people with lived experience of homelessness.

As this is a new post and there will be scope to shape the position depending on your own interests and experience. We are keen to support you to try things out and bring your own ideas to the table.

We are looking for someone who can listen to, and learn from, people from all walks of life; has a passion for participation and co-production; and a desire to make a difference and create change at policy and systems level.

What we are looking for....

Our relief workers play a crucial role in supporting our team. This work is offered on a casual, hourly paid basis to provide cover during staff absence and/or particularly busy periods. Shifts are worked on a residential rota and can be 2pm - 10pm, 7.30am - 2.30pm, 10pm - 7.30am. Within those hours there can be a variety of shifts required, eg 7.30am – 11am or 4.30pm – 8.30pm.

Ideally, you will have experience of direct work with children and families and/or experience of working with children or adults with a learning disability and/or an autism spectrum condition.

Who we are:

SU Scotland has a distinct position in children’s and youth ministry across Scotland, seeking to work in unity with churches, Christian youth organisations and Trusts. Our vision is to see every child and young people of Scotland exploring the Bible and responding to the significance of Jesus. We are a national charity, with around 140 staff and over 2,500 volunteers. Our activities take place in schools, outdoor activity centres, and local communities.

Associate Trusts play an integral part in all of this.

The first Associate Trust began in 1994 as a partnership between local churches and SU Scotland in a local community enabling children and young people to discover God’s love and grow in their faith. Since then, there have been many Associate Trusts partnering with SU Scotland, resulting in thousands of children and young people having the opportunity to “discover, explore, respond and flourish.”

We are seeking a part-time (0.8 FTE) Associate Trust Network Lead to join our Local Ministries Team, to drive the strategic expansion of the Associate Trust network, as well as to resource existing Trusts, overseeing and strengthening current infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take an active role in visiting Associate Trusts and keep abreast with key priorities and challenges, as well as gaining an understanding of the Associate Trusts’ ministry through interaction with children and young people they work with.
  • Develop a three year strategy to expand the Associate Trust network.
  • Develop and coordinate training for Associate Trusts in consultation and in conjunction with the Local Ministries Management Team and the SU Scotland Learning Manager.
  • Provide support and guidance with regards to relevant policies and procedures, e.g. HR, Finance, GDPR, Safeguarding.
  • Develop ministry partnership for this post, inviting potential donors and prayer supporters to partner with you in this ministry.

Who we are looking for:

The successful applicant will have high levels of initiative, proven experience of charity sector governance and project management. Strong interpersonal and communications skills are also key with the ability to develop positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

For this post, it is important that you are able to demonstrate a commitment to SU Scotland’s ethos, working principles and vision. It is also an Occupational Requirement (Equality Act - part 1, schedule 9), that the post-holder is a committed Christian.

About the role:

The Youth Participation Worker will join a small team (2 workers and a manager) designing, planning and delivering our WOW! project that supports young people aged 16-24yrs with the transition between education and employment.

The project offers group sessions and works with partners like Edinburgh Zoo and Edinburgh International Festival to help young people build on their skills and improve their confidence.

WOW! has been successfully running for almost 2 years, having delivered 6 cohorts during that time. Each cohort runs for 10 weeks, with up to 10 young people participating in each group. *Sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Broomhouse Hub, with some sessions being delivered by partner organisations in outreach locations throughout Edinburgh.

Having demonstrated the fantastic impact of WOW! we have recently secured additional funding which will allow us to run a further 4 cohorts through to the end of July 2027, and we hope to secure further funding to secure the project longer term.

Key tasks in the role include:

  • Co-design, plan and deliver WOW! group sessions to meet the objectives of the project, carrying out meaningful consultation with group participants to ensure the content is engaging and appropriate for their needs, whilst balancing the funders requirements
  • Meet with young people to assess their suitability for the project and to deliver appropriate support
  • Create promotional material and network locally, recruiting suitable young people on to the programme
  • Work with project partners to coordinate session planning and practical aspects of delivery
  • Track and evaluate the progress of the project to demonstrate impact and inform funder reporting
  • Maintain project administration, ensuring accurate, detailed, records are kept for project activity, and the attendance and skills development of each young person
  • Stay abreast of local opportunities for young people, such as community groups, jobs, work placements, further education and volunteering opportunities
  • Source and commission external trainers/suppliers to deliver sessions where specialised knowledge and/or skills are required
  • Recruit and support volunteers in the project
  • Ensure the safety of participants and volunteers through assessing risks and applying safeguarding practices
  • Work as part of the wider Community Learning and Development team to share knowledge and best practice

The successful person for this role will:

  • Have experience of designing, delivering and evaluating outcome focused, people-led community projects
  • Have experience of supporting vulnerable young people who are living with multiple barriers to employment
  • Be motivated, highly organised and able to prioritise their own workload with minimal supervision
  • Be able to work in a collaborative way with team mates and partner organisations to problem solve and deliver the projects aims
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills to naturally form and manage appropriate relationships with a range of people of all ages and walks of life
  • Have an understanding of health & safety practices including safeguarding and assessing risks

Working closely with the CEO, Treasurer, and wider staff team, the Finance Officer ensures that our financial processes are robust, transparent, and aligned with regulatory requirements. The role also supports colleagues with budgeting for funding applications and financial reporting, helping to ensure strong financial stewardship across the organisation.
