The Role

As Public Affairs Manager, you'll be at the helm of our policy initiatives, working to shape regulations and drive change in marine conservation and fisheries management. From engaging with politicians to developing advocacy campaigns and strategies, your work will be instrumental in advancing our mission to protect our oceans.

The location for this appointment is flexible within Scotland, but with the expectation that a significant amount of time will be spent engaging with politicians in the Scottish Parliament.

Most staff currently work from their homes, but there is also the potential to arrange office space if necessary, and there are regular team days in a hot desking venue in Edinburgh.

The role will be paid £36,114 - £40,969.50 per annum

Open Seas offers a matched pension contribution of up to 6%.

Your work will involve research, outreach, education, and collaboration with key partners to drive meaningful impact.

Open Seas

The Open Seas Trust is a campaigning charity working on issues of marine conservation and seafood sustainability in Scotland. We are a small, agile organisation with an evidence based, robust approach, calling out damaging and illegal activity in the press and with Scottish politicians and undertaking research and investigations to build the case for change.

We have become a prominent voice for marine conservation in Scotland, generating significant mainstream media attention and securing a strong profile for the organisation in the national press. We have also built a strong political reputation and track record delivering ambitious research projects.

The Team

We are currently a team of 5 staff working within two pillars of the organisation – policy and campaigns. Our work spans a range of tasks including research, lobbying, boat based research, meetings with seafood and fisheries stakeholders, campaigning and hosting events. The team works entirely from various remote home and shared working space locations and so much of our work is done using online collaboration tools.

The organisation is overseen by a Board of 5 Trustees who meet quarterly and advised by an Advisory Group who meet 1 – 2 times a year. We are a growing organisation and need support facilitating and administering our ambitious workplan and delivery.

The role

This advertised role will be instrumental helping ensure the organisation is able to deliver its objectives as well as helping to build the organisation as we go through a period of growth, and ensuring that this is done in a structured and sustainable way. The role will help streamline processes and ensure that we are running as efficiently and effectively as possible. The role will report to and work closely with the Head of Policy and Operations, in particular on the delivery of the business plan and growth targets.

Key tasks will include organising and administering board meetings, oversight of day to day finances, supporting the monitoring and reporting of performance, developing financial and funder report and providing administrative and logistical support for the wider team.

The location for this appointment is flexible, most staff currently work from their homes but there is also the potential to arrange office space if necessary.

The successful candidate will join a collegiate team and have the chance to engage across the organisation’s work.

Benefits

Role

The Open Seas Trust is a Scottish charity working on issues of marine conservation and seafood sustainability. We are a small, agile organisation and one member of a broad coalition of 130+ organisations campaigning together to recover the health of Scotland’s seas and fisheries. The role of Coalition Coordinator is critical to the running of the coalition and campaigning for its aims. You will be hosted by Open Seas to work across and on behalf of the Our Seas coalition, from campaigns and communications to coalition development and will engage directly with the Coalition’s Coordination Group and Campaign Steering Group.

The location for this role is flexible; most fellow staff currently work from their homes but there is also the potential to arrange office space if necessary.

Open Seas is a growing organisation and this role has been established to enhance our work on marine and fisheries policy in response to the ongoing challenges faced by our seas. The Public Affairs Manager will be responsible for refining and delivering our policy strategy, delivering the organisation’s asks and enhancing the parliamentary profile; it is a chance to drive change on one of the most pressing environmental issues faced by Scotland today. Working within a small, collegiate team the post holder will engage across Open Seas work, with opportunities to support a wide range of activity.

The post-holder will report directly to the Head of Policy and Operations and core tasks will include developing briefings, parliamentary monitoring and enhancement and delivery of policy strategies.
