As part of our vision, we aim to be actively engaged in celebrating, supporting and loving the people within our community. In 2018 we created a community hub, The Phoenix, designed to primarily serve the people of Dumbarton West, namely the residents of Castlehill, Westcliff, and Brucehill. The Phoenix includes a community cafe and a wide and varied activities programme including youth work, toddler provision, adult learning, intergenerational events, art classes, fitness classes, wellbeing programme and volunteer opportunities.

Youth Worker

Purpose of role

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Youth Worker who is passionate about developing and delivering quality, engaging & fun youth work activities for children & young people from Dumbarton West. This will include our youth clubs, youth groups support, Youth Voice and Outdoor Learning.

Your main role will be to support our Youth work lead/Centre Manager to plan, develop and deliver an exciting and engaging youth work programme including our established youth groups and youth work provision. This will include setting up, running projects, arranging workshops, organising training and events, providing activities to bring children & young people together.

You will work closely with children & young people, their families and any relevant partners, to ensure they are informed and supported to participate in any programmes, and any other community based activities. The post holder should be flexible as the actual times of work may involve working evenings, school holidays and weekends.

Key Responsibilities

  • To support the development and delivery of our youth work support for children and young people aged 5-18 years.
  • To support children and young people’s involvement in the planning and delivery of youth work that meets their needs.
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate activities which support, connect and inspire children and young people in Dumbarton West.
  • To use a variety of approaches to consult and engage with young people.
  • To maintain up to date and accurate records of youth work sessions and any other youth work activities delivered.
  • To understand and abide by the organisations policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, Data Protection, Confidentiality and Child Protection.
  • Ensure non-discriminatory practices at all times in line with the organisations Equality and Diversity policy.
  • To work in partnership with key local organisations.
  • To liaise with parents, carers, professionals and partner agencies.
  • To support the development of learning for sessional staff, volunteers including Young Leaders.
  • To produce monitoring and evaluation reports as requested by your line manager.
  • In addition you will be expected to contribute across all aspects of the Phoenix support to Dumbarton West.

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Adult Learning Worker to support our activities programme working with the community, partners and the Phoenix Team.

You will help support Volunteer recruitment identifying training and learning needs putting together an annual syllabus of learning opportunities.

You will consult with our local community to identify opportunities for Dumbarton West to access opportunities to learn new skills and support the development of a users forum who will help implement the results of our consultation.

Key Responsibilities

● To support Volunteer recruitment, identifying training, learning needs and creating an annual syllabus of learning opportunities.

● Consulting with the local community around training, employability and learning needs.

● To develop a users forum who will lead our community consultation, implementing their recommendations for our activity programme.

● Delivering adult learning courses and stand alone sessions.

● Developing links with third party organisations who can provide elements of adult learning programmes.

● Develop links with local residents who can offer their skills and knowledge to the learning calendar.

● Undertake training as required.

● Support major events within The Phoenix’s calendar alongside the staff team.

Community Café Lead

Purpose of role:

Do you understand the power food has to bring people together? We are really excited about the future of the Community Cafe; we are in the process of transitioning to being a donation-based café where people pay what they can afford.

This will involve consideration of the environmental impact of what we offer, ensuring that menus reflect and fully utilise what is seasonally available from our garden, reducing food waste, landfill and the consequent environmental damage through food donations. The Café is a central part of life at The Phoenix, providing a warm, safe and welcoming space for the community to gather for food, company, activities and groups.

We are looking for a passionate and dedicated Community Café Lead to manage and contribute to the smooth running of the Community Café, including all cooking and catering requirements. The Café Lead will manage a small team of Café Assistants and Volunteers and ensure excellent customer service, hygiene, food safety and stock control are always upheld. You would form part of the wider Management Team at the Centre and will be required to work with the Centre Manager to contribute and support the wider development of The Phoenix values and strategic aims.

Key Responsibilities

● To work with the Centre Manager and to take responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the café.

● Ensure high standards of food and drink preparation and planning are maintained daily, including demonstrating professional culinary skills as appropriate to the role.

● Be responsible for all health and safety procedures including food hygiene and HACCP.

● To compile weekly rotas for a team of Cafe Assistants and Volunteers, ensuring the efficient and effective use of resources

● To update and refresh the café menu utilising food donations and eliminating waste.

● Work with the Centre Manager to influence the ongoing development and implementation of a successful working strategy for the Cafe, in line with the values and principles of The Phoenix.

● To demonstrate and promote excellent customer service skills.

● Provide training and development of new Café staff members, volunteers and work placements.

● Lead on planning of menus, stock control and ordering.

● To ensure all monies are handled in accordance with company policy and procedures.

● To support any marketing and promotional activity and events

The Phoenix opened in autumn 2018 with this post being part of a passionate staff team working

within the centre.#

As part of our community consultation, local residents expressed a desire to have a café space within The Phoenix. The community café has become a central part of the life of The Phoenix, providing affordable food and drinks and a place for the community to gather for activities and groups. The purpose of the post is to manage the café, train and support volunteers and staff within the café and support the wider development of The Phoenix.

This role will support our activities programme having two main elements.

1)Working in partnership with our project coordinators to identify training and learning needs for our volunteers and put together an annual syllabus of learning opportunities.

2) Consult with our local community to identify opportunities for Dumbarton West to access opportunities to learn new skills.

For both of these elements the training and learning opportunities will be a combination of sessions led by the project worker and other staff, bringing in tutors for specific certificated courses (e.g. first aid), and working with third parties to bring in opportunities for local residents.
