Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust seeks a new Board Member with financial and accounting expertise

Out of the Blue Arts and Education Trust is an arts social enterprise with wholly owned trading subsidiaries operating the Drill Hall cafe and the Bongo Club. We are looking for a new board member with financial and accounting expertise, commensurate with the governance of a growing organisation in the top decile of Scottish charities.

Skills and Expertise

Out of the Blue (OOTB) is currently going through an exciting period of development, extending our provision of studios and creative opportunities within Edinburgh. Consequently we are looking for additional expertise on our voluntary board of trustees.

Specifically we are looking for someone who will provide oversight and leadership in the analysis of the group’s finances and financial reporting.

In addition to financial acumen we expect that a new board member will have an interest in and commitment to OOTB’s purpose and values.

About Out of the Blue

OOTB is an arts and education charitable social enterprise based in Edinburgh which provides opportunities for creative participation. OOTB generates space and community for local artists and collaborates with artists in all media from all over the world. We provide a combination of affordable studios, rehearsal rooms, performance venues, exhibition space in 6 buildings in Edinburgh.

OOTB also run a cafe at our base in the Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Leith. We initiate participatory art projects with the local community and beyond, and develop hands-on training, jobs and enterprise, such as Out of the Blueprint.

We have two trading companies, wholly owned by OOTB – The Bongo Club and OOTB Productions and are currently reviewing our company structure to accommodate our development of Abbeymount Studios, where we have an opportunity to redesign, repair and fully utilise a listed building within Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site for artist and community benefit.

OOTB benefits from well-managed reserves that we plan to invest in the further development of the organisation over the coming years.

About the Board of Trustees

The board meets 6 times a year and trustees are expected to join one or more of our board committees, covering – finance, strategy, risk, and staffing.

Board positions are voluntary however reasonable expenses can be met where necessary.

Buildings Manager

Out of the Blue are looking for a part time Buildings Manager (30 hours per week) who can start in early 2024. The Buildings Manager will be working weekdays 9am to 5pm on a job-share rota basis primarily at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall, and at our other Edinburgh-based buildings as required. Days and patterns to be mutually agreed.

We’re looking for a person with a good level of skill and experience in all aspects of building maintenance. Good interpersonal skills are also essential for this role as well as the ability to work on their own initiative and to manage and lead specific projects. Reporting to the Facilities and Operations Manager, the successful candidate will also be responsible for the management of a team of part-time Duty Managers.

Hours: 30 hours per week (0.8% FTE). Monday – Friday (9am – 5pm) – pattern to be agreed.

Pay: £31,313 (pro rata, with anticipated annual increases)

Out of the Blue are looking for a full time Facilities & Operations Manager who can start in early 2024. The Facilities & Operations Manager will be a senior management position within the organisation with a role focused on the maintenance, repair and development of our buildings and equipment.

We are looking for a person with experience in managing the repair and maintenance of a building, with complex operations. We aim to recruit someone with previous experience of managing, motivating and developing a Building Management team. Experience in managing the renovation of an architecturally and historically significant building would also be desirable.

Creative Programme Development Manager

Out of the Blue Arts & Education Trust (OOTB) is a charity and social enterprise providing artist studios, and space for events, exhibitions, rehearsals and meetings in five buildings across Edinburgh. OOTB has an established reputation and ongoing commitment to the development of buildings for community benefit.

The charity also owns subsidiary companies that run the Drill Hall Arts Cafe and The Bongo Club.

At a pivotal time of development, we are creating a new full-time role of Creative Programme Development Manager to be proactive in utilising our spaces to produce and show the work of the communities we are associated with.

We will need: Experience of initiating and managing participatory arts projects culminating in events, performances, or exhibitions.

This role will be a management level position, collaborating and interacting with other managers across the organisation to ensure that the programme of activity delivered at OOTB reflects the unique spectrum of our work.
